BUFFING-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1914.,
Application filed March 21, 1914. Serial No. 826,187.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosErH H. MILLER, of Wellsburg, in the county of Brooke and State of West Virginia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Buliing-ltliandles, ofwhich the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is a plan view illustrating my improved bufiing tool; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4t is a detached longitudinal sectional view of the front ball bearing socket; Fig. 5 is a detached plan View of the end cap; Fig. 6 is a side view of the rear ball bearing plug; and Fig. 7 is a side view of the holding head.
Like symbols of reference indicate like parts wherever they occur.
Heretoforc in bulling and polishing the ntside of metal cans, parts of lamps, and other hollow metal articles, it has been common to use a handle having a metal rod extending therefrom, the metal rod being inserted in the mouth of the can or other article, which being supported thereby is presented to and held against the revolving butiing surface, the can rotating on the rod. This is crude the work is imperfectly done, and skilled labor is required.
The object of my invention is to provide a tool which will hold the can or other article firmly, and to allow it to rotate freely and evenly when it is brought in contact with the buifing surface.
To this end it consists in a tool composed of a revoluble rod mounted in ball bearings in a casing, and a removable head or holder adapted to fit in the mouth or neck of the article to be buffed and to hold the same securely during the butting operation.
In the drawing 2 represents the casing of the handle which is provided with a cylindrical bore 3 through which the rod 4; extends, the rod being held in rotatable position Within the casing by means of the collar 5 at the forward end, the collar being keyed to the rod, and by the nut or plug 6 at the rear end, which plug is secured to the rod by a screw thread and by the cap 7 and the jam nut 8. Within the casing 2 at the forward end is a metal sleeve 9 having a ball bearing cavity 10 within which are the bearing balls 11, against which the rod 4 and collar 5 bear, and within the handle at the rear end thereof is the sleeve 12 having a ball bearing cavity and bearing balls 13 which are located between the walls of the cavity and the nut or plug 6. At the forward end of the rod 4 is a screw thread 1st which en gages with a thread 15 in the head 16. This head is adapted to fit within the neck of the can to be burnished, and as it is thus removable from the rod a other heads of shapes and sizes adapted to fit other articles may be substituted therefor.
When a can or other article is to be burnished, a head of a size and shape to fit Within the article is secured to the rod 4., the article is placed on the head, and then held in contact with the revolving burnishing wheel which rotates the article and the rod together.
The advantages of my invention are that the article may be held firmly against the burnishing wheel in any desired position without the necessity of skilled labor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a bufling handle, the combination of a casing having an interiorly revoluble spindle, ball bearings at each end of the spindle, and a head for holding the article to be buffed.
2. In a bufling handle, the combination of a casing having a longitudinal cavity, collars provided with ball bearing seats fitted in the cavity, ball bearings, and a spin- .dle adapted to be rotated on the ball bear-- ings and to hold the article to be bufl'ed.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
JOSEPH H. MILLER.
