The spiral gears 20 and 21 mesh with spiral gears 24-, which are fixed upon a pair of vertical shafts 25. On the upper ends of these shafts are ,mounted the ribbon spools 25. A pair Of-Lpinions 26 is fixed upon the shaft 12 at the inner side of the spiral gears 20 and 21,- said pinions being arranged to alternately engage with pawls 27 carried by the gears 20' and 21, for the purpose of driving the ribbon spools in opposite direc-. tions. The shaft 12 may be longitudinally shifted'tocarry one ofzthe pinions 26 into position to be engaged-by a pawl '27 by means of a suitable handle 28 having arms embracing the sh'aft 12 'and lying at opposite sides-of a pair of collars 29' fixed on said shaftf'lhe shaft 12 may be held in either one of its operative positions by suitable ineans'he'rein shown as consisting of a lever 30 piv'otedat 30 in a support 31, and held by a spring 32 in either one of two positions,' the spring, causing the lever to snap ,over center.

The tension of the spring 38 is such that under ordinary conditions the worms 10and 11 will remain in meslnbut-if the ribbon feed should be interrupted for any reason, tension willl be placed upon the ribbon, the Worm wheel 11 will finally cease rotating, and the continued rotationiof the driving shaft 5 will force the worm 1O downwardly against the action of the spring 38, and temporarily out of mesh with the worm wheel 11. Thus ,even tliough the ribbon spools are at a standstill, the shaft 5 will be permitted to rotate so that the drum 1 may continue to actuate the carriage in the regular way. This action of the driving worm 10 prevents any undue strain upon. the parts of the inechav nis1n,,and also prcvents the parts from gears in mhsh and peru'iitifing the gears t0 tending from front to back of the machine said slip out of mesh when undue strain is placed upon the parts. i
