Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS F. ROBERTSON, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. ll0,l6l, dated December 13, 1870.
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, LoUIs F. ROBERTSON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented anew and Improved Compound for Eating Hides and Skins; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement on a compound for bating all sorts of hides and skins for upper and harness leather, and also sheep and goat skins, as described in Letters Patent No- 87.202, granted to me February 23, 1869, said compound being made of water, molasses, sawdust, and urine, or ofurin e,
molasses, blood, and water. -The compound which forms the subjectma-tter of my present application for a patent consists of water, sawdust, and ammonia, with or without blood and urine. These ingredients are mixed togctherin about the following proportions: sawdust, one and one-half bushel; blood, three gallons; urine, two and onehalf gallons; water, one hundred and fifty gallons; ammonia, onepound; or, ifblood and urine are dispensed with, the proportions are about as follows: sawdust, two bushels; water, onehund'red gallons; ammonia, two pounds. These proportions will, however, undergo slight modifications according to the condition of the water and the season, and for various kinds of hides and skins the proportion must be increased or diminished.
\Vhen blood is used,-it can either be employed in afresh state or the blood maybe dried and preserved until it is to be used, when it is dissolved in water, the quantity of dried blood employed in this case being equivalent to the quantity of fresh blood as above stated.
The peculiar advantages of my bating compound, when compared with the bates heretofore used, may be enumerated as follows: First, by the application of my compound any common workman is enabled to perform the hating process without danger of injuring or spoiling the stock, which often happens by the old bating process, even if an experienced workman has charge of the labor; second, the cost of the process of bating with my compound is only 0ne-third of that of the old process third, the process of bating, when carried on with my compound, is not subjected to the influence of thunder-storms, whereby the stock subjected to the old bating process is frequently damaged or spoiled. I
\Vha-t I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. A compound for bating hides and skins, made of sawdust, water, and ammonia mixed together, substantially in the manner herein set forth.
2. A. compound for bating hides and skins, made of blood and ammonia.
3. A compound for hating hides and skins, made of blood, sawdust, and ammonia.
4. A compound for bating hides and skins, made of sawdust, blood, urine,- water, and am monia mixed together, substantially in the manner herein specified.
his specification signed by me this 20th day of September, 1870.
