INTERNAL CU'MBUSTIO'N ENGINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1914.
Application filed September 5, 1912. Serial No. 718,769.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrrr Nnrsz, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Colombes, near Paris, Republic of France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Internal Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to internal combustion engines of that type in which the cylinders are arranged in star shape.
The invention has for its object to reduce the weight of the engine without diminishing, the rigidity of the same.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is shown by way of example.
Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the arrangement of the cylinders in the tubular cross stays of the same. Fig. 2 is a section on line AB of Fig. 1.
The improved engine comprises a frame 1 which has the shape of a polygonal crown and serves for maintaining the pistons 2 in the same plane, said pistons being fixed to the crown by means of bolts. Upon the pistons 2 the movable cylinders 3 are arranged which have cooling ribs and which are connected by means of connecting rods 5 with th cranks of the main shaft 4. The main shaft 4 is a three-throw shaft and has three cranks of which the two outer cranks 6, 6 stand at an angle of 180 with regard to the central crank 7 the lengths of said outer cranks 6 being together equal to the length of the central crank so that the crank shaft is well balanced. The group of cylinders I, III, V is connected with the cranks 6 and the other group of cylinders II, IV, Vl is connected with the crank 7 It is easy to understand that owing to this arrangement all the movements are well balanced as all the pieces move in the same plane and are of the same weight.
The polygonal crown 1 is connected with the crank shaft on the one hand by a cross 8 of solid cross section and on the other hand by a cross 9 which consists of the suction tubes. The inner ends of the suction tubes are connected with an annular channel 10 which forms the central part of the cross 9 and is connected by a tube 11 with the carburetor. The explosion chamber 12 is arranged in the piston 2 and has at its upper end a valve box 13 situated outside the crown l, owing to this arrangement the spark plugs in the valves are easily accessible.
The advantages of the invention are the following :Easy access at the valves, spark plugs and ends of the connecting rods. Perfect cooling of the pistons and their bottoms. Free expansion of the cylinders. Great rigidity of the frame which can be directly fixed to the frame of flying machines.
I claim 1. In an internal combustion engine, in combination, a frame, a crank shaft journaled therein and provided with three cranks, one of saidcranks being positioned centrally between said other two cranks and at an angle of 180 therefrom, pistons fixed to said frame, cylinders movably associated with said pistons, connecting rods between said cylinders and said cranks, said cylinders being arranged in two sets, the cylinders of one set alternating with the cylinders of the other set, the connecting rods associated with one of said sets being connected to said central crank, the connecting rods associated with said other set being connected to said other two cranks, spark plugs in said fixed pistons, exhaust valves and suction valves in said pistons, and conduits for conducting the explosive mixture to said pistons.
2. In an internal combustion engine, in combination, a frame, a crank shaft journaled therein and provided with three cran rs, one of said cranks being positioned centrally between said other two cranks and at an angle of 180 therefrom, pistons fixed to said frame, cylinders movably associated with said pistons, connecting rods between said cylinders and said cranks, said cylinders being arranged in two sets, the cylinders of one set alternating with the cylinders of the other set, the connecting rods associated with one of said sets being connected to said central crank, the connecting rods associated with said other set being connected to said other two cranks, spark plugs in said fixed pistons, exhaust valves and In Witness whereof I have hereunto set suction valvles in said pistons said frame my hand in the presence of tWo Witnesses. bein rovic ed with a central portion havr ing annular channel and With hollow JOSEPH arms connecting said channel to said pis- Witnesses:
tons, and a conduit for conducting the eX- H. O. OOXE,
plosive mixture to said annular channel. RICHARD BAYER.
