Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1914.
Application filed September 17, 1913. Serial No; 7905186.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM F. DINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Printers Tie-Up; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful printers tie-up or holder.
One of the features of the invention is the provision of a bar or slug of simple and improved construction having at one end elongated tongues and slots provided with transverse openings, adapted to be arranged any suitable distances apart, the other end is provided with short tongues and slots, each tongue having a single transverse opening.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide four similarly constructed bars or slugs, the short tongues being adapted to fit in the elongated slots of the adjacent bar or slug, said bars or slugs being arranged in a rectangular disposition, with pins extending through the openings of the adjacent tongue and slot connected ends, thereby providing a simple and improved, practicable and adjustable holder for standing matter.
By providing a device of this character, the standing matter is not only held firm and square, thereby preventing the type from getting off its feet by being proved up as well as preventing the danger of pieing the job, but also saves considerable time and eliminates the use of the usual unsanitary page cord utilized heretofore for tying up a job. Heretofore in tying up a job with a cord great care is necessary, because of the danger of pieing the matter. By use of the present device, there is not only considerable time saved in unraveling the page cord heretofore used, but a perfect lock up may be had either for press or foundry work, without removing the clamps, bars or slugs, which can also be used as furniture to quad or fill out large or small blank spaces or panels.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective, showing a series of type forming standing matter tied or clamped together by the improved device. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the sections or bars disassembled. Fig. 3 is a view showing two of the bars on one side joined together in alinement.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there will be seen a lock-up or tie-up frame designated by the character 1 and comprising a plurality of bars or slugs 2, which may be of any suitable or desirable dimension. Each bar may be constructed of any suitable metal or other material having at one end elongated tongues and slots 3 and 4 provided with a series of transverse openings or apertures 5, which may be arranged any suitable distances apart. The other end of each bar or slug is provided with short tongues and slots 6 and 7 each having a sin gle opening or aperture 8, the crotches of the short slots 7 act to engage the sides of the long tongues to prevent distortion of the rectangular contour when the bars are connected, either at the corners of the contour or where two bars are connected to form a longitudinal side as shown in Fig. 3. In connecting the bars or slugs to form the locker or tire frame, the short tongues are received between the long tongues 11 of the adjacent bar or slug, there being a pin extending transversely of the registering openings or aperture to hold the bars or slugs in position, said pins are designated by the character 10. Said tongues 11 are received in the recesses 12. The heads of the pins are counter-sunken slightly, but protrude upwardly a little, in order that they may be easily extracted or withdrawn.
In Fig. 3 some of the bars or slugs are joined together in alinement to form longitudinal sides of a lock-up frame, such frame being designed to hold standing matter of a large bulk.
The invention having been set forth, What is claimed as new and useful is A tie or lock up frame comprising a plurality of bars or slugs joined together in a rectangular contour consisting of longitudinal sides and transverse ends, one end of each bar having elongated tongues and slots having a plurality of transverse openings, the other end of each bar being provided with short tongues and slots, each short tongue having a single opening, the openings of the long and short tongues being in registration, the crotches of the short slots acting to engage the sides of the long tongues to prevent distortion of the rectangular conand means passing through said openings of the adjacent long and short tongues of the bars for adjustably connecting the same.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 15 name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM F. DINN.
