AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June23, 1914.
Application filed August 17,- 1912. Serial No. 715,609. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS Bonnowmrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Amusement Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in amusement devices, and more particularly positive in its action.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
\Vith these objects in view my invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved amusement device in its preferred form, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the hoop operating stick.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 designates a hoop and 2 the operating stick therefor. the former being preferably of metal and circular in form.
The operating stick 2 comprises a handle 3 secured rigidly to a metal shank 4 having a flexible circular bent portion at the extremity thereof opposite said handle. At the juncture of the bent portion 5 of the shank 4 with the straight portion 6 thereof an enlarged threaded portion 7 is provided to receive a thumb-screw 8 that is tangentially disposed to the circular bent portion 5 of said shank. The end 9 of the bent portion 5 is spaced apart from the enlarged portion 7, thus providing an opening for the entrance of the hoop into said bent portion. The end 10 of the thumb-screw 8 is adapted to abut the end 9 of the bent portion 5 when the same is screwed into the closed position,
thus forming a substantially circular ring which conforms to the hoop and allows a free movement of the same therein.
An important feature of my invention is the frictional locking means of the thumbscrew 8 formed when the same is in'closed position and screwed up tightly. It is'clear that when theends 9 and 10 abut that further turning of a thumb-screw will spring open the-ring and that the reaction of the same due to the flexibility thereof will force the threads of the screw 8 into close engagement with the threads of the enlarged threaded portion 7 thus locking the screw in position. This locking means is simple in the extreme and effectually prevents the loss of the screw which might otherwise get loosde and fall out when the device is being use Various slight changes might be made in thegeneral form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In an amusement device, a circular metallic hoop and an operating stick adapted to engage the same, said stick comprising a shank having a flexible circular bent portion at one end thereof, an enlarged portion provided with a threaded aperture adjacent said circular portion, the end of said circular portion being spaced apart from said enlarged portion, and a screw mounted in said threaded portion disposed tangentially to said circular portion the end of which screw is adapted to abut the end of said circular portion and to spring the latter out of its normal shape, whereby a frictional looking means for said screw is formed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
