HERWARTH THIEME, OF MAGDEBUBG, GERMANY.
BARREL-SHAKER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERWARTH THEME, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Magdeburg, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Shakers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved barrel-shaker for use in packing groceries and dry salters goods and the like in casks or barrels more tightly than can be done by hand, and I accomplish this object by mechanism in connection with a rotary tilting platform for the reception of the cask or barrel to be filled and upon which the latter is caused to rotate while at the same time being tilted and shaken I will now fully describe the apparatus with reference to the annexed drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical transverse section of the apparatus at rest, while dash-lines indicate the working of same; Fig. 2 is a plan corresponding to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a face view of the device for driving and tilting the platform.
To a round-ended pivot a is fixed platform Z2 which has an upturned peripheral flange to prevent an object placed on said platform from falling ofi'. The pivot a is seated in a step-bearing having an upwardly enlarged opening which permits the pivot to oscillate. The platform is supported on rollers 0 arranged in different positions.
For driving the platform, a driving shaft (Z is mounted beneath same in suitable bearings and carries a friction roller 6 formed Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 24, 1913.

with lateral extensions f near the periphery for use in striking against and bringing into operation one or other of two arms 9 loosely mounted on the shaft (Z at opposite sides of the roller 0. These arms are longer than the radius of the roller 6 and act as cams for lifting the platform during rotation, the loose arms falling by gravity almost immediately after reaching the uppermost vertical position. The rotary speed of the platform should be such as to insure for the constant rotating of a cask or barrel being loaded while being at the same time energetically tilted.
I claim:
1. A barrel-shaker for tightly packing barrels, comprising in combination a platform capable of being continuously rotated and simultaneously tilted, and mechanism for retating and tilting said platform, as described.
2. A barrelshaker for use in packing barrels, consisting of a pivoted platform with upwardly turned peripheral flange, an open step-bearing for same, rollers for supporting said platform, a roller and a driving shaft for rotating the platform, lateral extensions on said driving roller and loose arms on said driving shaft at each side of the driving roller for lifting the platform, all as described and for the purpose stated.
