WILLIAM H. SHEELEY, OF GREAT KILLS, NEW YORK.
GARMENT-SUSPENDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1914.
Application filed October 5, 1912. Serial No. 724,084.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SHEELEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Kills, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment- Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to gripping devices for use on garment suspenders, such as drawers holders on trousers suspenders, garters &c., and is designed to afford a secure hold upon the material of which the garment is composed without subjecting it to excessive strain or wear, and at the same time to conduce to the comfort and convenience of the user.
The invention consists in the specific construction and arrangement of parts claimed, a distinguishing feature being a transverse elongated C-shaped claw on one member of the fastening engaging with and retaining the garment material upon a transverse elongated T-shaped tongue upon the other member of the fastening, whereby a relatively extensive duplex bight is attained upon the material of the garment which affords a firm hold thereon without dangerous concentration of strain; and whereby the release of the garment may be effected by a simple lateral movement, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a front elevation of my improved suspender; Fig. 2, a section thereof taken upon line 2-2 Fig. 1; Figs. 3, 4 and 5, are respectively front, edge, and rear views of the outer or female clasp plate; Figs. 6,7 and 8, similar views of the inner or male clasp plate.
The important feature of the inner or male clasp plate A, is its formation with the elongated tongue at, which is T-shaped in cross section and extends transversely across the plate as shown in Fig. 6; and conversely, the important feature of the outer or female clasp plate B, is the elongated claw b, which is essentially C-shaped in cross section and extends transversely as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, in position to couple with the head a of the tongue when the clasp plates are superposed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This claw b is of such larger area than the tongue as to prevent contact of the walls of the tongue and claw at all times.
The clasp plates A, and B, are formed with suitable means for attachment to the elastic suspenders C, C as for instance with I the slots and cross bars shown in the drawings which admit of the tucking in of the ends of the bands G, C as shown in Figs 1 and 2, it being understood that I do not limit myself to this means of attachment, the essential feature in this respect being the use of base plates for the tongue a, and claw b, which are attachable to suitable suspenders. In the drawings the latter are shown as consisting of the ends of a single length of elastic band pendent from a coupling plate I), or equivalent device by means of which the suspenders may be connected with a suitable supporting medium, according to the purpose for which the device is to be used.
A portion m, of the material of the garment to be supported is positioned over the head a of the tongue a, and the claw b, then applied to confine it thereon, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,--the claw 6, creating a duplex bight in the cloth around the head of the tongue, so that tension in either direction tends constantly to bind the material firmly between the parts named until released by the removal of the claw b, which latter result may be quickly and conveniently accomplished by sliding the outer clasp plate B, laterally away from the inner clasp plate A.
By the use of my improved clasping device wear and tear of material is reduced to the minimum, and the comfort andconvenience of the user enhanced.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
In a garment suspender of the character designated, a male clasp member formed with a transversely disposed elongated tongue substantially T-shaped in cross section, and a female clasp plate independent thereof and formed with a transversely disposed elongated claw substantially C-shaped in cross section and of such larger area than said tongue as to prevent contact of the walls of said tongue and claw at all times, said claw being adapted to receive the head of said tongue and to form a relatively extensive duplex bight upon the material engaged by said head within said claw.
WILLIAM H. SHEELEY.
