To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS C. MATTHEWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cook Stoves or Ranges, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates generally to an improvement in cook stoves or ranges, and more particularly to a construction of closet and supporting parts therefor, as ordinarily used in connection with such stoves.

The main object of the present invention is the provision of a superstructure adapted to be arranged in rear of and above the top plate of the stove, and including a closet, closet back, half back, and brackets for supporting all parts in a rigid manner from the stove top.

The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear perspective illustrating the invention. Fig. 2 is a rear perspective of the closet and back therefor. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the half back. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspectives of the opposing brackets. Fig. 6 is a top edge view of one of the brackets. Fig. 7 is a perspective of the. stove top, showing it adapted for use with the improvement.

In carrying out the improvement, I provide opposing brackets 1 and 2 designed to provide the medium of support or the superstructure. As these brackets are of identical construction, a detail description of one will suffice for both. The. bracket is constructed of sheet metal bent to provide a lower stove top engaging strip 3, an upright strip 4 extending at right angles to and from the rear end of the strip 3 and an upper supporting strip 5 extending forwardly from and at right angles to the upper end of the strip 4. The strips 3 and 5 extend in parallelism and in vertical alinement, and the supporting strip 5 is braced from the upright and from the. lower or base strip 3 by a curved brace 6, preferably constructed of sheet metal bent into channel form to provide the desired rigidity. spective strips 3 and 5 on their proximate surfaces near their outer or free ends, and centrally engage the relatively forward surface of the upright strip 4. The upright strip is provided on its relatively outer vertical edge with a rearwardly extending flange 8, and the supporting strip 5 is also provided on a similar edge with an upstanding flange 9. Secured to the relatively inner surface of the flange 8 is a combined brace and holding strip 10, of right angled form with one section in contact with and secured to the flange 8 and the other section 11 overlying and slightly spaced from the proximate surface of the upright strip 4. The holding strip 10 is of less length and width in its respective sections than the similar dimensions of the strip 4 and flange 8, as clearly seen in Fig. 5 of the drawings.

The closet proper comprises a rectangular receptacle 12 having a back 13, the latter terminating at its lower edge in alinement with the closet but extending above the upper surface or top of the closet, as is usual in this type of structure. The closet proper, which is preferably separate from the back 13, is secured to the latter by extending the side walls of the closet rearwardly of the back, and bending said extended portions into contact with the rear surface of the back, as flanges 14 and riveting them in place.

In conjunction with the closet and back I use a section 15 hereinafter referred to as a half back, and adapted to close the space between the stove top and the lower edge of the back. The half back comprises a rectangular section approximately similar in dimensions with that of the back proper, the upper edge of the half back being provided with holding lips 16 secured in spaced re lation longitudinally of said edge and outwardly offset above the edge to provide sections 17 to cooperate with the back proper.

In securing the parts in position the respective brackets 1 and 2 are secured to the rim 18 of the stove top, near the rear edge thereof, stove bolts being passed through openings 19 formed in the rim and base strips 3 of the bracket. The closet and back are then applied upon the supporting strips 5 and riveted or bolted in place by fastenings passed through the openings 20 formed in the flanges 9. Prior to securing the closet and back in place the half back is passed down between the upright strips 4 and the spaced sections 11 of the holding strips 10, the lower edge of the half back resting upon the top plate of the stove and being, if preferred, secured to lugs 21 rising from the rear edge of the rim 18. In the application of the closet and back, with the half back in place, the offset portion 17 of the lip 16 receives the lower edge of the back proper and secures the same against displacement.

The improvement provides a rigid closet support and backs for a stove structure, which may be entirely constructed of sheet metal, and which may be readily secured in place or removed when desired, and which permits the half-back to be placed in assembling the arts and held in position without the use of fastening means, as rivets and bolts, as is the present practice, thus effecting a saving of both time and expense in the manufacture of stoves and ranges of this type.

What is claimed is 1. A bracket fora stove closet support including a member formed to provide a base strip to engage the stove top, an upright. strip, and a forwardly extending supporting strip, edge flanges projecting from the outer edges of the upright and supporting strips, and a holding member secured to the flange of the upright strip and having a section overlying and disposed in spaced relation with the rear surface of the upright strip, whereby to provide a space for the reception of a portion of the closet structure.

3. A closet for stove tops including brackets to be secured to the stove top, a closet and back therefor, said brackets being formed with flanged supporting strips between which and to which the closet is secured, a half back, the brackets being formed with spaced sections between which the half back is slidably received, and lips secured to the upper edge of the half back, said lips being offset to overlie and bear upon the back proper of the closet.
