MAXWELL NORMAN, OF NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND.
WATER-SUPPLY APPARATUS FOR CATTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. December 26, 1913. Serial No. 808,694.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAXWELL NORMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVatenSupply Apparatus for Cattle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stock barn construction, and more particularly to the provision of means for watering and feeding stock standing in the barn, whereby the stock may be easily and conveniently watered and fed and the barn readily maintained in the sanitary condition now generally recognized as essential to health.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate an embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a stall, manger and water supply apparatus embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
A is the floor of the barn, preferably sloping as shown and formed of cement or other plastic material which may be readily and thoroughly washed and cleaned. Within said floor there is molded or otherwise formed a trough or manger B, and directly in the rear of said manger is a vertical curb or ledge C, preferably formed integral with the floor A. Contained within said curb C is a water supply pipe D provided at intervals with ports d and suitable T couplings in which are mounted the hollow post-s E of the stanchion frames between which the stock is held by the stanchions. To said posts E are secured in any suitable manner, as by bolts f, water troughs or buckets F having ports f which register with ports 6 in the posts, permitting the passage of water from the pipe D to the buckets F. The supply and level of the water in the buckets F are controlled by the usual tank and float valve (not shown) commonly employed for this purpose in watering trough systems, provided with a number of independent buckets.
It will, I believe, be obvious that in a construction in accordance with my invention the stock may be readily fed from the manger O and readily watered from the buckets F. It will further be observed that there is absolutely nothing upon the floor of the barn to collect dirt and thus bring about an unsanitary condition, but that on the contrary the entire floor is unobstructed and may be readily washed and swept absolutely clean and kept in thorough sanitary condition with a minimum of care. Furthermore, the placing of the supply pipe within the curb and the utilization of the hollow posts of the stanchion frames for conveying the water from the supply pipe to the buckets, result in a very great saving in the cost of the materials of the water supply apparatus and the expense incident to its installation.
I claim:
1. The combination with a standing floor for stock, of a curb, a supply pipe within said curb, stanchion frames comprising tubular posts spaced apart mounted in said curb and connected with said pipe, buckets on said posts, and said posts and buckets having ports to permit the passage of water from said supply pipe into said buckets.
2. The combination with a standing floor for stock, of a manger formed in said floor, a vertically extending curb, a supply pipe within said curb, stanchion frames comprising tubular posts spaced apart and mounted in said curb, T connections between said pipe and said stanchion posts, buckets on said posts, said posts and buckets having ports to permit the passage of water from said pipe to said buckets.
Patented June 16, 1914.
Signed by me at Boston, Massachusetts,
this 18th day of December, 1918.
MAXWELL NORMAN.
