To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BURNHAM O. STIoK- NEY, a citizen of theUnited States, residing in Elizabeth, in the county 'of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ty e- Writing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, especially those of the front strike variety, in which type bars are pivoted in an are below a platen and strike rearwardly against the front side of the platen. In such machines the width of the system of type bars is usually less than the width of the key board. Moreover, the type bars are actuated in a forward and backward direction, while the keys move up and down, and it is one of the objects of. my invention to provide a simple and inexpensive mechanism, which is also easily made and assembled, compact, and accessible for transmitting the downward movement of the keys into the forward and backward movements of the type bars.
This case is a division of my application No. 265,591 filed June 16, 1905.

Against the front side of the usual platen 1 strike type bars 2, each carrying a lower case type 3 and an upper case type 4, both on one block, as shown. These type bars have their hubs 5 hung on pivots 6. Said pivots are provided upon hangers 7 formed on a segment 10, which may be fixed or supported in the machine in any suitable manner. As will be seen from Figs. 1 and 3, the hangers are broad, and the recess or space between any two hangers is just sufficient to accommodate a type bar 2. The types strike upon the front side of the platen 1 a little above the axial plane thereof, and it will be understood that the platen may be vibrated up and down to enable difierent types to print, the capital printing position of th platen being seen in dotted lines at 1'.
12 comprise arms13 which depend'from 'a common fulcrum rod 14 extending across the machine and suitably supported at its ends in the framework 15. These arms 13 are quite long. The rod 14 may be at least as high as the front bank of keys 12, and is preferably as high as the fourth bank, whereby the keys are caused to swing rearwardly, as well as downwardly, which is a desideratum. The arms 13 are preferably about as long as the distance from said fourth bank to the fulcrum rod 14. There is considerable for ward and backward movement of the key levers at the lower ends of said arms 13, where the ivots 16 are provided upon the key levers or operating the type bars.
Upright sub-levers 17 are fulc'rumed between their ends at 18 to horizontal fulcrum links 19. On its lower end, each sublever 17 is pivoted to the rear end of a link 20 pivoted at 16 upon the key levers. The fulcrum link or idle link 19 is pivoted at 21 on the framework. On the upper end each sub-lever is pivoted at 22 directly toits: type bar, and follows the movement of the latter, which movement is accommodated by the links 19 and 20. The type bars and their connections may be returned to normal position by means of draw springs 23.
The arms 13 may operate a uniform-motion universal bar 41 extending rearwardly across the system of key levers and mounted upon a rock shaft 42, the latter connected by an arm 43, link 44, crank 45 and link "46 to a dog rocker 47 having the usual dogs 48 and .49 to cooperate with the usual rack 50 provided upon the usualplaten carriage, (not shown). The universal bar may also operate a ribbon vibrating-mechanism, (not shown). Since the arms 13 vibrate through different arcs according to the different distances of the uniform and moving keys from the fulcrum rod 14, I provide upon the rear ends of the arms 13 projections 51, of different lengths and so placed with reference to the universal bar 41, and with reference to the fulcrums or axes 14 and 42, that the universal bar and hence the dog rocker has uniform movements at all the key strokes. The key levers having the shortest strokes have the longest projections 51 to engage the universal bar plate 41 at points nearest 42 and most remote from 14, and vice versa.
'Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and type bars for writing on said platen, of key levers pivoted in front of said platen, arms extending downwardly from their pivots forming part of said key from their pivots forming part of said key levers and having mainly a forward and backward movement, forwardly extending arms on which the keys are mounted, and levers operating the type bars behind said key levers and adapted to receive the thrust of said downwardly extending portions at points of said levers that move mainly in a backward and forward direction.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a segment and type bars pivoted thereon, of a pivot bar in front of said segment, key levers pivoted on said bar,
- arms' extending downwardly from their pivots forming part of said key levers, and a connection between said key levers and said type bars including levers ada ted to receive the thrust of said downwardly extending arms. 4
4:. In atypewriting machine, the combination with a pivot, of an arm extending downwardly from said pivot, a forwardly extending member on said arm and having a portion that moves mainly in a forward and rearward direction, a key on said forwardly extending member, a type bar, and a lever arranged to receive at a point thereof that moves mainly in a forward and rear- Ward direction the rearward thrust of said downwardly extending member and operate said type bar thereby.
5. In a typewriting machine, thecombination with type bars, of key levers pivoted in front of said type bars, keys on said levers having a downward motion, members on said levers having mainly a rearward motion, and connections behind said levers for operating said type bars by the rearward motion of said levers, said connections mounted to move mainly in a rear- Ward direction.
6. In a typewriting machine, the'combination with type bars and pivots therefor, of key levers comprising a portion having a rearward thrust, links extending rearward from said key levers, and levers interme diate said links and said type bars.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with type bars, of key levers comprising upwardly extending portions, rearwardly extending links operated by said upwardly extending portions, and levers connecting said links to said type bars.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with U-shaped levers, of keys on said U-shaped levers, pivots On which said levers swing, type bars, and levers behind said U-shaped levers for operating said type bars and connected to the bottoms of said U-shaped levers.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a key, of a U-shaped lever on which it is placed, a pivot for said U-shaped lever about at the height of said key, a ,type bar, a lever behind said U-shaped lever pivoted to operate said type bar, and means for operating said lever from the bottom of said U-shaped lever.
10. In a typewriting machine, the combination with U-shaped levers and keys carried thereby, of a pivotbar forsaid U -shaped levers at about the height of said keys, a universal bar operated by the backward movement of said U-shaped levers, type bars, and connections comprising levers for ,operating said type bars by the rearward motion of said U-shaped levers, said universal bar and operating levers all lying behind said U-shaped levers.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with' a type bar, of a lever for operating said bar, a key, a U-shaped lever carrying said key, and a link connected to the bottom of said U-shaped lever for operating said type bar operating lever.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type bar, of a pivoted lever for operating said bar, a key, a U-shaped lever carrying said key, and a link connected to the bottom of said U-shaped lever for operating said type bar operating lever.
13. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type bar and a lever for operating said bar, of a freely swinging link on which said operating lever is pivoted, a U-shaped key lever, and a link pivoted to the lower rear portion of said U-shaped key lever and to a portion of said operating lever which moves mainly backwardly and forwardly.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type bar, of a pivoted key lever, a lever behind said key lever for operating said type bar, and a member on said key lever beneath the pivot thereof at a portion thereof which has mainly a backward and forward movement, for driving a portion of said type bar lever which has mainly a backward and forward movement.
15. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a key lever, of a pivot on which it swings, a member on said key lever below said pivot and so that it has mainly a forward and backward movement, a type bar, and a lever for operating said type barbehind said key lever-and having a portion which has mainly a backward and forward movement, and is operated by the backward movement of said key lever.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with key levers, of pivots about which they swing, said pivots nearly on a level with the keys on said levers, membersforming part of said key levers below said pivots and having mainly abackward and forward movement, type bars, and levers behind said key levers'operated by the backward movement of said key lever'members to operate said type bars, saidlevers having portions. having mainly .backward' and forward movements at points where they are connected to saidkey levers.
18. In a t pewriting machine, the combination with Key levers, of'pivots about which they swing, said pivots nearly on a level with the keys on sai'd'levers, members forming part of said key levers below saidpivots and having mainly a backward and forward movement, type bars, levers behind said key levers operated by the backward movement of said key-lever members to operate said type bars, said levers having portions having mainly backward and forward movements. at points where they are connected to said key levers, and a universal bar behind said key levers and operated by the backward movement of said members.
19. lln a typewriting machine, the combination with type bars, of key levers pivoted directly in rear of the keyboard, upwarlitlly 3 levers, and connections behind said arms for operating said type bars by the. backward thrust of said upwardly-extending arms.
20. In a typewriting machine, the combination with keys, of U-shaped' levers on which said keys are mounted, a pivot bar carrying said U-shaped levers, a universal bar behind said U-shaped levers to be engaged thereby, type bars, levers behind said U-shaped levers for operating said type bars, and means to connect the leyers to the bottoms of the U-shaped levers. In a typewriting machine, the combination with U-shaped levers, of keys mounted thereon, pivots on which the levers swing, .said levers having downwardly extending portions from their pivots and upwardly extending portions to the keys, levers behind'said U-shaped levers and swung thereby and extending in about the same, direction as said portions, and type bars operated by said rear levers.
22. In a typewriting machine, thecombination with U-shaped levers, of'means by which they are pivoted nearly at the height of said keys, so that the bottom rear portions of said U-shaped levers swing backwardly, type bars, and levers behind said U-shaped levers for operating said type bars and having forwardly and rearwardly moving portions connected to .the backwardly moving portions. of said U-shaped levers.
23. Ip a typewriting machine, the combi nation of a universal bar, key levers, pivots in front of said universal bar on" which said key levers swing, type bars, levers behind said key levers for operating'said type bars, and members on said key levers beneath said pivots and having a backward movement for operating said type bar-levers.
24. In a front strike writingmachine, the combination with a system of, key levers each comprising a key bearing stem, a rear-- wardly extending portion and a member or arm extending'upwardly therefrom andpivoted or fulcrumed at its upper end, of a curved system of rearwardly striking type bars having forwardly and rearwardly moving portions, and means connecting said forwardly and rearwardly moving portions to forwardly and rearwardly moving portions of said key levers; said connecting means including a system of sub-levers, and links extending from said sub-levers to the key levers.
25. The combination of a set of levers bearing keys forming a keyboard, said levers being suspended by means of pivots close to said keyboard and above many of the keys, said levers also comprising portions extending down from thepivots and having mainly forward and backward movements, rearwardly-striking type bars in rear of said keyboard, and type-bar operating levers arranged behind said key levers and having portions which move mainly in a forward and rearward direction, WlllCh portions are connected to the portions of said key levers which move mainly in a forward and rearward direction.v
26.
