COMBINED POUCH AND CIGARETTE-MAKING- DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1914.
Application filed June 3, 1913. Serial No. 771,503.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY A. KEssLnR, citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Pouches and Cigarette-Making Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for making cigarettes and combined therewith a pouch to hold the tobacco and a holder for the cigarette papers, and has for one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efiiciency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device whereby cigarettes may be manufactured one at a time as required.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation with the combined closure and rolling mechanism in open position. Fig. 2'is a section on the line 2-- 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the combined cigarette rolling and closure mechanism partly closed illustrating the action. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the combined closure and cigarette roller in closed position with the cigarette completed and ready to be discharged.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all the views 0 the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device comprises an up er body member 10 of sheet metal and pre erably formed with a down-turned rim 11 to receive a tobacco holding pouch or bag 12,
the latter being preferably of suitable fab- Iic, but which may be of any other suitable material.
The member 10 is provided with a relatively large opening 13, and hinged at 14 to one side of the opening is a closure 15 which when turned down fills the opening 13. The closure 15 is provided with a relatively large opening 16 near its outer portion and with lateral flanges 17 at its sides, each flange being provided witha slot 18 e tending for the major portion of its length in parallelrelation to the faces of the closure, and curved away from the closure as shown at 19 next to'the hinged edge. Slida-bly mounted within the slots 18 is a bar 20 having a fabric sheet 21 connected at one end thereto. The sheet is preferably of closely woven silk and 18 connected at its outer end at 22 to the closure 15 at the inner edge of the opening 10, the object to be hereafter explained.
Pivoted at 23 to the body,10 at its opposite sides are links 24, the links being coupled at their free ends to the bar 20. The links 24 will be so proportioned that when the member 15 together with its flanges 17 is disposed in its lowered position or within the opening 13 of the body 10, the bar 20 will be caused to move in the slots 18 toward the outer ends and stretch the fabric 21 between the bar 20 and the attaching point 21, the object to be hereafter explained.
Mounted to slide in the slots 18 by a central core 25 is a roller 26. Springs 27 con nect the core 25 of the roller to the body 10 between the hinge 14c and the adjacent edge of the body 10. The springs thus exert their pulling force against the roller to draw the latter toward the inner end of the slots 18.
Byreference to Fig. 2, it will be noted-that 28 and are supported preferably in clefts in a plate 28 which is attached at the body 10 to one side.
When the device is to be used one of the papers is removed from the member 28' and bent into U shape and inserted within the bag-like fabric member 21 and the tobacco which is to form thecore of the cigarette inserted into the interior of the paper through the opening 16, a relatively wide open space being produced by the curving of the lower ends 19 of the slots 18, as will be obvious. The roller 26 is thus held initially against the outer face of the fabric 21 and the bar 20. The edge of the paper next to the roller is bent over the tobacco within the paper envelop and forced for a short distance between the tobacco and the porlatter against the cigarette wrapper and causes the latter to roll around the tobacco and thus automatically roll the cigarette as the closure is moved toward the body 10..
The natural swelling or bulging of the tobacco within the aper wrapper and the fabric sheet holds t e roller 26 against the bar 25 and against the resistance of the spring 27, and thus imparts a constant pressure upon the tobacco. The bulging or swellin of the mass of tobacco within the fabric olding member prevents the roller from being moved into the curved portion 19 of the guideway so long as the cigarette material is located between the terminal 28 of the fabric material and the roller as shown in Fig. 3, andas the member 15 is moved toward its closed position the roller will impart a corresponding rolling motion to the paper inclosedtobacco forming the cigarette. When the member 15 is fully closed within the opening 13 the cigarette will have been completed and the roller drawn by the springs 27 into' its initial position shown in Fig. 4. The cigarette can then be removed and the cover 15 again opened and another cigarette constructed as required.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and of any suitable material and operates effectually for the purposes described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
