DEVICE FOR WHIRLING PHOTO-ENGRAVERS PLATES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States of America, and
resident of Enfield, in the county of Hart-' ford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devicesfor the Whirling of Photo- Engravers Plates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in a device for the whirling of a photo-engravers plate, or photographic plate whereby the liquid coating required to form the plate surfacing will be distributed in a manner to cover the face of the plate with entire uniformity throughout allof the area thereof.
The present improvement particularly pertains to means whereby the plate may be quickly and reliably secured on the whirling frame, and to means for the clamping of plates of varying sizes and in a way better than heretofore.
The invention is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and is set forth in the claims.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a plan View and Fig. 2 is a side view of the plate whirler. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on a larger scale as taken on line 3-3, Fig. 3, for showing details of construction hereinafter described. Fig. 4: is a perspective view for more fully showing the last referred to details of construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
In the drawings, A represents the frame comprising a pair of parallel and separated bars 6 .7) suitably united as by the transverse tie members 6 at their ends and this bar has centrally aflixed thereon a depending stud a whereby, by connection, for instance with a breast drill brace, the frame may be rotated or whirled 0n the axis of said stud.
g g represent a pair of blocks restlng on the tops of the bars and having longitudinal ribs 9 of less depth than, and engaged in, the space between the bars, and these blocks carry transverse intermediately connected strips 01 cl of spring metal having their extremities bent as indicated at e and made with the notches c, the bendings of the eX- tremities of each strip being in a direction away from the plane of the face of the block against which the intermediate portion of the spring strip is engaged and confined.

block section it having a longitudinal rib 72 to also engage in the space between the frame bars and the bolt j passed vertically through and beyond the block g and through and beyond the centrally perforated clamp block together with the thumb nut e on the screw threaded extremity of the bolt constitute means for the confinement of each of the spring finger carrying blocks in its adjusted position on the frame.
Each block 9 in addition to the transversely disposed strip at providing an opposite pair of comparatively short spring fingers has at the opposite sides thereof another strip 03 substantially parallel with the one 0? but considerably longer, thereby providing a second set of spring fingers, the extremities of which are also suitably bent and notched, which are effective to engage a plate at points further ofi'side from the frame than the points of engagement acquired by the appliances 0?.
In Figs. 1 and 2, 00 represents a photoengravers plate as confined on the frame to be whirled by the smaller engaging members cl d, but in case a larger plate is to be treated, the carrier and clamping blocks are unfastened and turned half way around so that the short and long plate engagement members have their positions reversed as indicated by the dotted line in Fig. 1, so that the longer strips d d have their locations on the sides of the blocks 9 which are toward each other and so that the bent extremities of the one strip are disposed in- .cliningly toward those of the other strip.
By connecting the centralized stud a in a drill brace, or on any spindle having connected therewith means for its rotation, the plate on and with the frame may be whirled in a horizontal or vertical plane or in any oblique plane as may be desired and for the best surfacing results.
Changes of structural or mechanical character from those herein shown may be made without departing from my invention and without sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
I claim 1. A plate whirler consisting of an elongated frame having a centrally located member by means of which it may be whirled, and provided with a pair of blocks, one of which is adjustably slidable toward and away from the other, and spring members arranged transversely of, and extendclamps on the support, said clamps being adapted to hold a plate therebetween by 'clamping engagement with the edges thereof, each clamp having a two point spaced bearing on the plate.
3. In combination, a support adapted to be whirled, and a plurality of clamps on the support, each of said adjustable opposing clamps being provided with a plurality or spaced divergent plate supporting portions adapted to engage the edges of the plate to be whirled and between which the plate is clamped.
4c. In combination, a support adapted to be whirled, and a plurality of adjustable opposing spring clamps on the support, each of the spring clamps having spaced ends with divergent supporting portions adapted to engage the edges of the plate to be whirled and between which the plate is clamped.
5. A plate whirler consisting of a frame having a centrally located member by means of which it may be whirled, and provided with a pair of blocks, one of which is adj ustably slidable .toward and away from the other, and said blocks having strips of spring metal arranged transversely of the frame, and each spring strip having its extremities bent toward the opposite strip and made of notched form.
6. A platewhirler consisting'of a frame, with provision whereby it may be rotated and having an opposite pair of members one 7 of which is slidably adjustable on the frame the blocks in adjustment on said frame, and a strip of spring metal intermediately sccured on each block and extended therefrom in opposite directions transversely of the frame, and having its extremities bent from its general length, together with means whereby the frame may be whirled.
8. A plate whirler consisting of a frame comprising a pair of separated and parallel bars, a pair of blocks having longitudinal ribs adapted for sliding engagements between said bars, screw operated clamping devices for adjust-ably confining the blocks in desired separation on the frame, and each said block carrying at its opposite sides transverse intermediately connected spring strips, one thereof being longer than the other, and each spring strip having its extremities bent in a direction away from the face of the block to which the strip is connected, and means whereby the frame may be whirled.
9. A plate whirler consisting of a frame which comprises a pair of separated and parallel bars provided at the middle thereof with a depending member aflixed to the frame, and adapted to be secured to a rotary member, a pair of blocks having longitudinal ribs, of less depth than, and engaged in, the space between the bars, at the top of the'latter and carrying transverse intermediately connected strips of spring metal having bent and notched ends, block sections also having longitudinal ribs, under the bars with the ribs a bolt passed through the adjacent upper and lower block members of each pair thereof, and a clamping nut on each said bolt.
10. A plate whirler consisting of a sup port adapted to be rotated and plate clamps having sliding adjustment with the support and securable to the support independently of the plate to be whirled in opposing adjusted relation, each of said plate clamps.
being provided with yielding means adapted to bear at spaced points against the opposite edge portions of the plate without indenting the sides of the plate.
