IMPROVEMENT IN C ANAL WASTE-WAYS vAND SLUICE-GATS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letten Patent and making part of the same. v
-1, ANDREW AJACKSON WHITNEY, of Harrisburg, county of Dauphin, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certainv Improvements in Canal VVaste-W'ay and Sluice-Gates? 0f which the following is a speci- ,ication. l f 4 The nature of my `hivention relates to an improve'- ment in wastewaynd'sluice-gates-for canals and other similar purposes-'where larg 'gates are required for stopping anddischargingwater; and
".Itconsistsof segmen'talgate sliding in curved recesses or ebates'in thexb'ulk-liead posts,`and at-- tached to radial arms, rswii 1ging on adjustable center" pins, sliding in ways secured-to lthe frameworl'of the gate. I f` VBy means of Vmyinventiomthe friction caused by the pressure of -the water against the gate, as' in the Case of the ordinary. slide-gate, is in a great measure, avoided, and the use of heavy 'machinery rendered unnecessary in raising and lowering the gate.
In the drawngf Figure 1 vrepresents a sectional ,view of my invention, and Y Figure 2, a plan view of the same.
A A. are the bulkA head-posts, 'rebut-ed to receive the ends of thesegmental gate C.
B is the frame-work,- to which the gate is secured.
'lhe segmental gate Gis attached to the radial arms C' C', at cachv end, which proceed from common centers, where they are secured and swing upon the center-pinsE E.
Thebasesof said pins E E are planed, or otherwise fitted to slide in ways orguides D D, attached to the frame B.
The said pins E E are capable of being movedback and forth in said ways by meansof the adjusting screws F F, causing the gate to approach or recede from the recesses in the bulk-head posts, and thus to regulate and adjust the distance between their bearing surfaces as may bev desired to secure the proper tightness of the joint with the leastpossible friction.
K K are chains, attached to the gate, and passing over the pulleys H H, which are provided with rightand-left screw-threads, as shown, whichreceivesaid chains as they are wound upon them, in the act of raising the gate/,land prevent them from jamming or packing. Y
The said pulleys are operated by means of levers,- which are inserted in the head J of the shaft, to which they are secured, and are held against the weight of the gate in any position, bymcans ofthe ratchet-wheel I,
Aattached to said shaft and pawl I.
. Having described my invention,
That Ik claim is- In combination with the segmental -gate C and radial arms C' C', or their equivalents, the center pins E E, guides or ways D D, and adj usting'screws F F, substantially as herein described.
ANDREW J AGKSON WHITNEY.
