lie it known that I, THOMAS Bonn llooreason, a subject of the King of Great Brit ain, residing at 'llollcross, u Scotland, have invented certain. new and useful improvements Relating: to Blastll urnaces for the Smelting of lroh and other ()res, of h ich the following is a specification.
5 .t present, in blast furnaces, it is usual to have a downcomer which coninnlnicates with, the dust-urtcher, the entrance to the downcomer being arranged below the charging hopper and hell (or cup and cone) and above the level of the charge. When dealing with dusty ores and fuel a very considerable loss at present takes place each time the usual device is opened for charging the furnace owing to the free escape of dust and gases to the atmosphere. Various devices have been proposed to olwintc this such as by using rotary chargers and such like but such arrangements are not only expensive but, owing to the rent heat, are readily put out of order. A ow, under this invention I arrange below the usual charging bell and hopper, a feed hopper prererably in the form of an inverted hollow truncated cone into which the charge drope when the bell is opened. this hopper being preferably made of metal and supported on the brick-work lining: of the furnace. The level of the charge is kept at some dis-stance above the bottom of this hopper so as to form a gas seal or closure. Below the hop per l make a series of outlets in the side wall of the furnace, these outlets extending upward to a gas main which encircles the furnace at the upper end thereof and may be arranged partly in the brickwork and partly outside the some. The gas main communicates with the (lOWDCOlUQl' and dustcatcher. The main has a series of explosion holes with doors and also a blceder The gas passes oil by the gas; outlets and any dust carried thereby passes to the dustcatcher. The bottom of the hopper projects inward some distance from the lining of the furnace so 2165 to give a clear space for the passage of the to the outlets. By this arrangement I not only insure that duet and shall not escape freely as before, but also insure that they shall all. be conveyed to the downcoiner and dust catcher. In order that the intention may be clearly understood l have hereunto appended explanatory sheets of drawings which show the upper part of a blast furnace as constructed in accordance with my invention.

It will be seen that, under my invention I arrange below the charging bell and hopper g, a hopper which is or may be made of metal and Supported by the brick work at which at this pointoverhangs toward the center of the furnace. The lower end i of this hopper projects inward some distance from and below the brick-work at 7' so as to leave an amiular space 79 therebetween for the free passage of gas to upwardly extending gas outlets 7a, the natural tendency of the charge to assume a conoidal shape also assisting in the formation of such passage. The outlets Z: are made in the wall of the furnace and the mouths thereof are arranged below the bottom of the hopper '5 while their upper ends (:OHlIfllll'llCullG with a gas main 0 which latter encircles the furnace at the up per end thereof and, as shown, may be arranged partly inside and partly outside the brick-work.

Having now fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1S2 1. A blast furnace having a charging device, a hopper arranged below the charging device and extending downwardly below the normal level of the charge. a gas main above said hopper and surrounding the upper part of the furnace and arranged partly at the outside thereof and a series of gas outlets extending upwardly through the wall of the blast furnace from below said hopper to the gas main.
2. A blast furnace having a charging device, a hopper below the charging device, a gas main above said hopper, a series of gas outlets extending upwardly through the wall of the blast furnace from below said hopper to the gas main and a number of steam and gas outlets extending from above the hopper to said gas main.
3. A blast furnace having a charging device, a hopper below the charging device and supported by the inner wall of the furnace, said hopper projecting downwardly and inwardly from said wall so as to leave an annular space between the wall and the lower end of the hopper, a gas main and a series of gas outlets communicating with said an nular space and said gas main.
4:. A blast furnace having a charging device, a hopper below the charging device and supported by the inner wall of the furnace, said hopper projecting downwardly and inwardly from said wall which latter overhangs toward the center of the furnace, the

A blast furnace having a charging device, a hopper below the charging device and supported by the inner wall of the furnace, said hopper projecting downwardly and inwardly from said wall so as to leave an annular space between the wall and the lower end of the hopper. a gas main partly in the wall of the furnace and a series of gas outlets communicating with said annular space and said gas main.
6. A blast furnace having a charging device, a hopper below the. charging device and supported by the inner wall .of the furnace, said hopper projecting downwardly and inwardly from said wall so as to leave an annular space between the wall and the lower end of the hopper, a gas main partly in the wall of the furnace, a series of gas outlets communicating with said annular space and said gas main and a number of explosion holes in said main.
