DANIEL .'P. MURPHY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR IO BUIIL STAMPING COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
METALLIC VESSEL.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, DANIEL I. MURPHY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of IVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Vessels, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to metallic receptacles and resides in the novel manner of reinforcing the connection between the neck and the mouth; and the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts whereby the reinforcing is effected.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central, vertical section through a portion of a receptacle embodying the invention; and Fig. 2 illustrates a step in the making of the can.
The structure illustrated in the drawing is of a milk can of standard construction, and while the invention is adapted for other uses, it is especially desirable in connection with milk cans or cans oit similar type.
A designates the breast section of the can; B the contracted neck; C the iiared mouth section and D the cover, provided with the usual skirting E.
In engaging the cover with the can there is a tendency, if the skirting is not properly alined with the neck section, for the latter to be stretched by forcing the cover into engagement with the receptacle. This is very objectionable, since the covers soon become loose, permitting the contents of the can to splash out around the cover. It is also desirable to form the breast and neck sections in a single piece so as to avoid seams on the interior ol' the can. I have therefore, formed the breast section and the neck from a single piece of metal, and provided the neck with a Ushaped flange portion F adapted to receive the inner end G of the cover. Preferably the U-shaped flange portion is carried by an outwardly-projecting, annular eXtension II adjacent the free end of the neck. In making up the structure the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 2 and the LL shaped flange portion and the extension compressed together to clamp the free end of the cover therebetween. All these parts are made up in the black and after the eompressing operation the neck, breast section Specicaton of Letters Patent.

and mouth portion are tinned by any wellknown method. The tinning operation conn pletely closes the joints between the entena sion and the flange portion and between the latter and. the month section.
By the structure heretofore described not only are seams within the neck and the breast section avoided, but the arrangement of the annular extension and the annular flange portion is such as to reinforce the neck adjacent its upper end and also the mouth section adjacent its base, while the formation of the joint between the mouth and the neck is such as to avoid a tendency to spread the same when the cover is forced in place.
Vhile I have described the preferred form of my invention I do not desire to limit my protection to the exact structure shown.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. In a receptacle, the combination with a breast section, of a neck section formed with an outwardlyextending, annular projection adjacent its upper end terminating in an annular U-shaped flange portion, and a mouth section having a portion arranged intermediate and clamped between the sides of the U-shaped flange portion.
2. In a receptacle, the combination with the breast and neck sections formed as an integral structure, the neck section having a U-shaped flange portion adjacent the upper edge thereof, ot a mouth section having a portion arranged intermediate and clamped between the sides of the U-shaped flange portion, and a coating covering the mouth and neck sections and the joint therebetween.
3. In a receptacle the combination with a breast section, of a neck section formed with an outwardly-extending annular projection adjacent its upper end terminating in an annular U-shaped flange portion ar ranged within the annular projection, and a mouth section having its lower edge arranged intermediate and clamped between the sides of the U-shaped flange portion.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL P. MURPHY.
