Description

tfllrih' ittte$ gli anni (tie,
ELARD- LUDDE, OF NEW YORK,`N; Y.
Leners Patent N0. 109,917, dated December 6,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUTTING'UP POMATUM.
The Schedule` referred to in these Letters Patent and making parl: oi the same.
To all whonuit-.apay concern Be it known that I, ELARD LUQDE, of the city, county, and State-of `New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Package for Pomatuml and other articles; and I do hereby 'declare the followingr to be a full, clear, andexact description therewithout solder, and provided with a shoulder toreceivev 'a top oi' tin-foil, which is secured in'position by turning iii the top edge of the box in such a manner that the injurious eti'ect of the solder on the pomatumor other article contained in the box is avoided, andA at the saine time all leakage is prevented, and easy access to the contents of the box lcan be had by cutting the top, while said top, before it is cut, forms at-ight cover, and preserves the contents ot' the box against the iuj urious inuence of the atmosphere.
In the drawing- The letter A designates a box which is struck up or spun of onesolid piece of' sheet metal, so thatno solder is required.v
Said box is provided at or near its. top with asquare shoulder, a, and a vertically projecting ange, l).
The shoulder is intended toreceive and'support the cover c, which consists of a disk of'tinffoil, and which is secured in position by turning in the flange b.
After the tiange'has beenvfirinly turned down with av proper tool, the. contents of the'box are 'hermetically sealed and all danger of leakage is avoided; whereas,
it' soldered metal boxes are used for packing pomatum,
and such boxes are exposed to a temperature approach ing the melting point ot' the fat inisaid pomatnm, the liquid fat is liable to leak outthrough the seams ofthe boxes and the poinatuin is lost; and, furthermore, the
-use of solder in packages for poniatum is also objectionable on the account of' the rosn or acid used in the operation of soldering, such rosin or acid being liable to form a disagreeable, sticky coinpounfl, when brought `in contact with the pomatuin.
My boxes are absolutely free from solder, an'd being made ont'of one solid piece of sheet metal, they present no seamsvtln'ough which the contents thereof vmight leak out.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y ,Y Y package, for. pomatum and other articles, com` posed ot' a' sheet-metal box stamped up 'or spun without solder, and lprovided with ashoulder to receive a top of tin-foil, which is secured in position by turning' in the topedge of the box, as herein shown and de-v scribed.'
This specification signed by me this'9tl1 day of N0- vember, 1870 ELARD LUDDE. Witnesses:
W. HAUFF, y E. F. KASTENHUBER.
