To all whom 'it may concern Be itknown that I, Orro C. AIAILBoRN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Hildersheim, Hanover Province, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a speciication.
My present invention relates to improvements in pumps and particularly to those of the so called valveless7 type, and it has for its object to provide `a simple, im proved and efficient pump of this character wherein the piston not only serves to introduce and discharge the liquid or fluid, but also serves as a valve to control the introduction and discharge of the liquid or fluid, the piston being constructed and operated in such a manner that the pump will be double-acting, that is to say, it will in troduce and discharge volumes of liquid or fluid during each stroke of the piston, a pump of relatively large capacity being thereby provided and a substantially continuous discharge is insured.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a pump of this character' wherein the piston, cylinder and related parts are so constructed and assembled that they may be cleaned thoroughly and with facility, a sanitary pump being thereby provided which is especially adapted for use in connection with milk.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain improvements, and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the speciiication. l

Specification of Letters Patent.

In the present embodiment of the invention, the pump embodies a frame 1 of any suitable design and construction, the frame 1n the present instance having a base 2, a bearing pedestal 3, an arm t to support the pump cylinder, and a bearing 5 for guiding the piston rod. rlhe frame 1 and the pedestal 3 support suitable bearings for a driving shaft 6, this shaft being equipped with tight and loose pulleys 7 and 8 whereby the pump may be driven, for example, by a belt and in such cases a belt shifter 9 may be provided for controlling the operation of the pump.
A wrist plate or its equivalent 10 is fixed to the shaft 6 and this wrist plate embodies niealns whereby the pump piston is operatec. tion, the operating means for the piston comprises a substantially spherical head or ball l1 which is fitted to oscillate in a cor respondingly formed seat, a part 12 of the seat being formed in the wrist plate 10 while the other part 13 of the seat may be formed upon a flanged ring 14, and this ring may be detachably or otherwise secured to the face of the wrist plate 10. Screws 15 are shown in the present instance which enable the ring kto be readily applied and removed if necessary with respect to the wrist plate and this removably applied ring provides means whereby the spherical head may be mounted in its seat. The head 11 is provided with a bore 16 which preferably extends diametrically therethrough and a driving pin 17 is fitted in the bore 16 in such a way that it may move axially and also rotate with respect to the head 11. The outer end of the pin 17 is rigidly secured in a head 18 which is formed upon the upper end of a guide rod 19, the lower end of this guide rod operat ing vertically in the bearing 5 so that the guide rod is permitted to operate only in a rectilinear direction, the axis of the guide rod preferably intersecting the axis about which the head 11 revolves during rotation of the pump driving shaft.

To facilitate the assembling and taking apart of the pump for cleaning and other purposes, the cylinder is preferably formed as a body section 2O and has separate and detachable upper and lower heads 21 and 22. the cylinder will be relieved, and the pump can be readily cleaned by removing such parts of the cylinder as necessary for the purpose.
Accordingto the present invention, the use of separate valves which are objectionable or well known reasons and render a pump diflicult to clean when ,handling milk, is avoided, the pump piston in the present instance being so constructed and operated that it will not only introduce and discharge the liquid at each stroke, but it will also ron tate ron its axis and thereby control the admission and discharge ofthe liquid. In that form of the invention shown, the piston 30 is substantially cylindrical and has a suitable liuid-tight fit within the body of the cylinder, it being capable of reciprocating and also rotating therein. The piston is provided with a piston rod 31 which extends through the stuffing or packing box 24 and the lower end of the piston rod is -suitably attached to the driving head 18 so that the piston rod will be reciprocated and also ro-V tated according to the movements of said head. For'example, the piston rod may be rigidly secured to the head 18 by a pin 32. The body of the piston is formed with one pair of vertical chambers or ports 33 and 34, these chambersV or ports being'open at the corresponding side of the piston and are open at the top of the piston and closed at the bottom thereof, and the piston is also formed with a second pair of vertical cham- .bers or ports 35 andl 36'which are closed at o the top of the piston and open atthe bottom.

As the pump is doubleacting in its operation, the liquid or fluid will flow to and from the pump with a substantially continuous motion.
I claim as Iny invention: 1. In a pump or the character described,
the combination oi' a frame having a seat :formed thereon, a cylinder head resting on said seat, a cylinder open at both ends and resting on said head, a second cylinder head lormed separately Yfrom and resting on the upper end of said cylinder, and a clamp connected to said :trame and operative upon the said second head to firmly secure the cylinder and its heads in operative relation and for securing said parts as a unit to said frame.
2. ln a pump, the combination of a vframe having a seat, a head resting on said seat, a cylinder open at both ends and resting on said head and having inlet and exhaust ports arranged in the sides thereof, a piston operative in said cylinder and having ports cooperative with those of the cylinder to control the introduction and discharge of fiuid with respect to the cylinder, a second head formed separately from and resting on the opposite end of the cylinder, and a clamp connected to the frame and operative upon said second head to secure said heads and cylinder to one another and to the frame.
