Description

E. B. STONE.
PORTABLE SAVINGS BANK.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 29, 1912.
Patented June 2, 191 i AT RNEY.
WITNESSE h) M w UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELMER B. STONE, OLE NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIG-NOR TO THE AMERICAN HARDWARE CORPORATION, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
PORTABLE SAVINGS-BANK Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 2, 1914.
Application filed July 29, 1912. Serial No. 711,983.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that I, ELMER B. STONE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Portable Savings-Bank, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more especially to receptacles designed for the safe keeping of money, and especially coins, and an obyect of my invention, among others, is to provide an etlicient and inexpensive means for preventing the unauthorized extraction of the coins from the receptacle.
One form of device embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the object hereinabove set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1. is a view in side elevation of a bank embodying my invention, with parts broken away to show construction. Fig. 2. is an end view of the same, with parts broken away to illustrate my invention. Fig. 3. is a detail view of a portion of the box showing the guard in top View.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 denotes the case within which a receptacle is removably located, this receptacle having an end 6 which forms a cap to close the end of the case. The chamber 7 within the case is formed, as to its upper side, by a top 8 extending within the box and forming a recess 9 between said top and the top of the case. All the parts thus described may be of any well known form and construction, and further and more specific description is therefore omitted herein.
Coin slots 10 are formed thnough the outer wall of the casing through which slots coins are passed into the receptacle, and a guard .11 is located in front of each of the coin slots to prevent the coins from being extracted. through said slots, this guard be ing so arranged that it will move away from the slot both directly backward therefrom and also vertically out of the plane of the slot, that is, out of a plane passing through the slot parallel with the top and bottom of the case, in order to permit a coin to be )ilSSGCl through the slot into the box.
In the construction of my improved. guard, a guide plate 12 is located upon the top 8, this guide plate being inclined with respect to the vertical side wall of the case, and therefore with respect to the plane of the slot 10. A post 13 is secured to the guide plate 12, and a coiled spring 14. is secured to this post, the metal extending from the coil to form a guard plate 15, from which the guard or tongue 11 extends at an angle downwardly in front of the coin slot. This guard is located and moves in a slot 16 formed in the top of the chamber. The post 13 preferably extends at right angles to the plane of the guide plate 12 and hence is inclined to the plane of the slot 10, but this construction is not essential to my invention, and in fact, the spring may be variously constructed to embody a guard substantially integral therewith, and arranged to move directly backward from the coin slot and also vertically out of the plane of the slot, and I do not, therefore, limit my invention to the exact form shown and described herein.
The description has been confined to a single coin slot and guard, but it will be understood that in a receptacle, as herein shown having a number of coin slots, a guard will be supplied for each of the slots.
I claim 1. A coin receptacle having a coin slot in the wall thereof, a post obliquely mounted within the receptacle, a coiled spring relatively located with respect to said slot, one end being secured to said post and the other end being extended to form a guard plate, and a guard extending from the guard plate in position to cover said slot.
2. A coin receptacle having a coin slot in the wall thereof, a coiled spring relatively located with respect to said slot with the axis of the coils disposed obliquely to the plane of the slot, and a guard wholly supported by said spring to be moved toward and from said slot.
3. A coin receptacle having a coin slot in the wall thereof, a top for the chamber within the receptacle, :1 guide plate mountof the plane of said slot as .it is pushed ed upon said top, and located at an angle backwardly therefrom. to the plane of the coin slot, a post pro- T jecting from said guide plate, a spring se- ELMER l cared to said post and a guard integrally Witnesses: formed With said spring and resting upon W. L. HOWE, said guide plate whereby it is moved out J. H. MILLS.
