COIN-DIBEC''OR FOR VENDING-MACHINES.
Specincation of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Original application filed May 9, 1908, Serial No. 431,779. Divided and this application filed April 1, 1909.
- Serial No. 487,139.
To all whom 'tt may eoncern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ASBURY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved' Gein-Director for Vending-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear,
\and exact description.
' My invention relates to vending machines,
'and it has for its object to provide a coin director disposed in the coin chute of a Vending machine, which will alternately direct coins in opposite directions.
Another object of the invention is to provide means which will ermit coins of less than predetermined iameter to pass through an opening in the coin chute so that they will not engage the'coin director.
Other objects of the invention Will appear in the following complete description.
This a plication is a division of application Serlal No. 131779 filed May 9, 1908, which matured in United States Patent No. 921,338, dated May 11, 1909, the principal features of the ,subject-matter of this ap lication being disclosed in the said United tates patent.
In this specification I will describe the preferred form of my invention, it being understood that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims. i i
In the drawings, similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a part of a vending machine, showing my coin director disposed in the coin chute; Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the guide arm in another position; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view 011 the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
By referring to the drawin s, it will be seen that a frame 5 is provide in which is disposed a coin chute 6, the coin chute being inclined for a distance and then being continued vertically.
A coin chute 7 is disposed at one side of the coin chute 6, and there is an opening 15 in the Vertical wall between the coin chutes 6 and 7, the opening 15 being disposed substantially from the plane of `the bottom of the inclined portion of the coin chute 6 to a plane just below the top of the inclined portion of the said chute and parallel therewith, so that coins of a predetermined size will strike against the rim of the opening and fall back on the guide arm 11, while coins smaller than the said coins will pass through the said opening. The portion of the coin chute 0 which is disposed vertieally has its walls 8 diverging downwardly, so that at the lower terminal 9` of the coin chute, the walls are substantially twice as far from each other as they are at the upper portion of the coin chute. Intermediate the walls 8 at the lower terminal of the coin chute 6, there is a partition 10 by which the coin chute is divided to permit coins to pass at either side. In the coin chute 6, below its diverging portion, there is pivoted a guide arm 11, which has below its pivot 12 diverging, depending tappets 13, these tappets 13 being adapted to contact with the artition 10 as the guide arm 11 is thrown fprom one side to the other, the terminal of the guide arm 11 being disposed in the diverging portion of the coin chute 6. w
In the operation of my invention, when a coin 111 is introduced into the coin chute 6, it will be directed by the guide arm 11 to one side of the diverging portion of the coin chute, where it will'strike one of the tappets 13, causing the tappet to move toward the partition 10 and permitting the coin to pass at one side of the partition, and causing the guide arm 11 to be thrown to the opposite side of the coin chute. When a second coin is introdauced into the' coin chute, it will be directed by the guide arm`11 toward the opposite side of theV partition, inasmuch as the guide arm 11 has not been moved to the other side of the coin chute. In the same way, the coin will strike the opposite tappet 13, the Weight of the coin causing the tappet to move toward the' partition 10 to permit 'the coin to move downwardly, thereby causthat it will not permit coins larger than those ofthe said character to enter the coin chute, and coins smaller than those of the vsaid character Will pass through the opening 15 to the coin chute 7 away from the guide arm 11, the coins of the said character being stopped by the rim of the opening 15 so that they will fall on the 'guide'arm/ 11, as has been stated.
By the use o'f' my invention, which may be operated with any coin-controlled mechanism, it is possible to provide an effective two-coin-vending machme, that is, a machine in which it is necessary to introduce two coins before the Operating mechanism is thrown into an operative position, the coincontrolled operatlng mechanism being disposed atrone side of the partition 10, and
by means of my nvention, only every alterlnate coin is permitted to reach the coincontrolled mechanism.
vQHaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a coin director for vending machines, a coin chute, the Walls of which di- Verge downwardly for a distance,y a guide arm ivoted in the coin chute with its termina disposed in the diverging portion of the coin chute, two depending tappet armssecured to the said arm and spaced from each other, and a partitionin the coin. chute displosed in the 'path of the tap et` arms, Wit which the tappet arms are a apted for engaging to support the arm, one tappet arm belng spaced from the wall of the com chute when the other tappet arm engages the partition respectively.
2. In a coin director for vending machines, a coin chute, a partition in the coin chute,,a guide arm pivoted in the coin chute, and two tappet arms secured to the guide arm and spaced from each other2 which are adapted for engaging the partition to support the arm, away from the Walls of the coin chute respectively, the tap et arms when not in contact With the partitlon, being disposed Within the coin chute respectively.
In testmony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two. subscribing witnesses.
'WILLIAM ASBURY.
