Application filed June 27, 1911.- Serial No. 635,636.
applying cement or shellac to the rim ofa bicycle or automobile rim, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character wherein the cement will be applied 0 en] y to all. the surface of the concave rim of the wheel.
iinother object of the invention is to provide an. apparatus of this character embodying a receptacle which is normally closed so to prevent the hardening or evaporation of the cement.
lVith the above objects in view, and others which will appear as the nature of the invention progresses, the improvement resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
flu tne drawings, accompanying this specification, there has been illustrated a simple and approved apparatus constructed in accordance with the present invention, it being understood that the showing therein is merely illustrative and that changes in the minor details of construction, as fall within the scope of the appendcd claim, may he resorted to if desired,
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the improvement, and illustrating the manner of applying the cement to the rim of a wheel. Fig. 2 is transverse sectional view taken through the apparatus when in its closed position. Fig. 3 is a similar view taken transverse to the showing in Fig. 2.
The improvement comprises essentially a .(llVlClM l casing which, when-the members are assembled, provide a substantially circular structure. The casing comprises what may he termed a lower or body portion 1 and a top 2. The top 2 is hingedly connected with the body 1 as at 3 and the meeting edges oi both the top and the body are preferably flanged as at 4, the said flanges extending a suitable distance beyond both the body and the top. The projecting portions of both of the flanges are preferably bifurcated, and positioned between the slotted,
extension d of the flange of the body momi his invention relates to an apparatus for the flanges as her is a pivoted threaded element 5. This element 5 is adapted to he swung" between the bifurcated portion of the flangel of the top or cover 2. The pivoted member 5 is threaded-as at 6 and the said threads are adapted to he engaged by a tlmmo not 7 whereby the top is securely retained noon the bottom member The space between of both. oi the sections vider with compressible t 8. the same being connected with the flange loi the hot tom 1 in any dc ircd manner, the said gasket changing all of the of the hettom memoer 1. By this arrangement i will he noted that the shellac or cement which is adapted to be positioned within the bottom 1 is prevented from evaporating, as the top, when sustained upon the bottom, hermeth (:ally seals the device. The bottom 1 is prelh erably provided with legs 9 whereby the same may be supported upon any level surface. The side edges of the bottom 1 adieu upstanding hearings 9, the same being adapted to receive truunions 10 formed upon a do livery roller or wheel 1i. This wheel 11 is of a lesser diameter than the casing ofthe apparatus and has its periphery rounded, so as ,to snugly engage the depressed periphcry of abicycle or automobile rim. The separate portions upon the opposite faces of the roller or wheel 11 are formed with bosses 12 and 18, and each oi the said bosses is provided with an annular depression to provide means whereby the cement or shellac rolling from the sides of the wheel 11 will be again delivered into the hottom section 1 without danger of contacting with the trunminus 10 of the said wheel. The top member 2 is preferably formed with a depressed portion or pocket 14, the same heingarranged upon the opposite-sides of the said top and are adapted to fit over the hearings 9 of when the latter is revolved around the roller or wheel 11. The wheel 11, may, if desired, he provided with a plurality of core oped ions 16, the latter serving to lighten the roller or Wheel ll, as well as to serve as pockets for retaining a certain quantity-of Mill lee
- the shellac which will enter therein through the pervious cover 15, and'it Will also be evident that a lubricant may be readily applied Within the bearings 9 so'as to permit of the free revolutions of the .trunnions 10 and from the. Wheel 11.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
' the simplicity of the device, as Well as the advantages thereof, will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such inventions a pertain Without further detailed description.
Having thus fully described the said invention, What I claim is L A device of the character set forth including a casing comprising an upper semi-cylindrical member and a lower semi-cylindrical member, said members being hingedly connected at one of their adjacent transverse CHARLES W. MCLAUGHLIN.
