CENTER-PLATE.
i Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1921.
Application filed 4December 8, 1917. Serial No. 206,336.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT S. Rowan, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Sedalia, State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Center-Plates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in center plates and has for its special object the provision of what l term a roller bearing center plate.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a center plate so constructed that all possible friction is eliminated.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the above specified character including a base having' bearing rollers mounted therein and a top plate adapted to Ht over the base to engage said bearing rollers whereby said top plate will be supported against friction.
Still another object of the present invention is the provision of a device of the above character which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eiiicient in use, and readily operated. p
lV ith the above and other objects in view the present invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of the present invention and in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device with the top plate removed; and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing by corresponding characters of reference throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates in general my improved center plate which consists of a base 6 and a top plate 7.
The base 6 includes a plate 8 having reinforcements 9 provided at intervals thereon through which apertures 10 are formed and by means of which the base can be attached to any suitable means of support.
The plate 8 is provided in spaced relation from the periphery thereof with an annular iiange 11 while disposed in spaced relation within this flange 1l is a concentric sleeve or iiange 12.
A plurality of bearing rollers 13 are journaled upon pins or rods 14; which connect the ianges 11 and 12 and extend radially from the center of the device.
These bearing rollers 13 are of conical formation as clearly shown in` the drawing and engage the under beveled side 15 of the top plate 7.
This plate 7 is provided with a flange 17 which fits over the before mentioned flange 11 whie the central portion thereof is formed with a circular projection 18 which fits within the iange or sleeve 12.
When the parts are assembled as shown in F ig. 2 of the drawing', it will be noted that the bearing rollers 13 will support the top plate 7 in such manner as to eliminate all possible friction.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be manifest that a center plate is provided which can be applicable for various purposes and which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described the invention what I claim is new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is;
1. A center bearing comprising a base provided with inner and outer upwardly extending flanges arranged in concentric relation, the outer flange extending higher than the inner ange, the inner flange having a plurality of sockets therein, the outer flange having a plurality of openings therein and alining with the respective sockets radially from the center of the device, pins fitted in said sockets through said openings, conical roller bearings journaled on said pins., a top platev having a beveled portion on its under side engaging the conical roller bearings for supporting the plate against friction and also having a central circular depending projection for engagement with the upper end of the inner flange and also provided with an annular depending flange adapted to embrace the aforesaid outer flange and to lit over the outer ends of the aforesaid pins.
2. A center bearing comprising a base having inner and outer annular flanges, the inner flange having a plurality of sockets therein, the outer iiange having a plurality ofopenings therein arranged in horizontal spaced relation the sockets and alningV with the latter radially from the center of the base, pins fitting in the radially alining sockets and the "openings, roller bearings journaled on said pins between said flanges, and a top plate mounted on said conical roller bearings and having an annular de pending ange surrounding the outer surface of the aforesaid outer` flange of the base, and lying over the outer ends of said 10 pins to prevent displacement of the latter outwardly with relation to the first mentoned flanges.
