STOVE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES Josnrn llionnr, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of
which the following is the specification.
My invention relates to improvements in stoves and the object of the invention is to devise means for supplying superheated air to the bottom of the grate of a stove so that it is drawn through the incandescent fuel contained in the fire resulting in a great economy of fuel consumed, and a further object is to provide means for controlling the draft both in force and direction and it consists in the novel arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter particularly explained.

A is the fire box provided with a back wall A having an outwardly curving upper portion A extending into proximity to the oven B at the top.
C is a tube provided with perforations C. The tube 0 projects through the side wall 2 of the stove, the projecting end of the tube being open allows air to pass through the tube to the perforations C.
The space between the back wall A of the fire box and the wall B of the oven is divided into two portions F and D by the dividing plate l The portion 1) which is located next to the wall B of the oven forms a secondary combustion chamber.
18 is a line formed by the bottom wall of the oven and the adjacent walls of the stove.
B is a fine formed by the oven wall 13*, and the wall B of the stove.
B is a flue formed by the oven top and the top of the stove.
B is the ordinary back flue with which the ordinary stove chimney communicates and 21 is an opening in the back wall of the stove and leading from the flue B to the flue B.

G is a slot formed in the wall of the stove. The slot G admits air to the superheating chamber F H and H are baffle plates. The battle plate l-l extends over the flue B so as to direct the hot air passing up the flue B to the oven door side of the stove and thereby more evenly heat the oven top. The battle plate H serves to direct the hot air passing from the fire box through the flue 13 toward the oven door side of the stove.
B is a damper extending between the end of the baffle plate H and the oven door side of the stove.
It will be understood that the gases as they pass from the fire box over the perforated tube mix with the air admitted through the perforations thereby producing a secondary combustion. The heat of the incandescent fuel in the fire box and the heat produced by the secondary combustion create an upward draft drawing the hot air from the space F and through the opening G into the flue B. The hot air is then drawn downwardly over the tube G and through the portion D and fines B and B to the opening 21 leading to the chimney. During this operation of course the damper B is closed as shown in the drawing preventing the direct passage of the hot air to the chimney. If it is not necessary to heat the oven the damper B is opened there by allowing the hot air to pass directly to the opening 21 leading to the chimney and heating the top of the stove in its passage, the baffle plate H serving to direct the air to the oven door side of the stove to distribute the heat more evenly.
T1 is a slidable damper held' in guide ways H located in the back flue B above and below the opening 21.
H is a slide bar secured at one end to the damper H and provided at the opposite end with a handle H The handle H extends up wardly through a graduated slot 4:. It will be readily seen that by moving the handle H along the graduated slot the size of the opening 21 will be regulated thereby controlling the draft passing from the fire box to the chimney. By this means when a certain degree of heat has been obtained the controlling damper H may be partially closed thereby lessening the draft up the chimney yet maintaining the required degree of heat and preventing waste heat passing up'the chimney and a consequent unnecessary consumption of fuel. It will further be seen that by 10- eating the superheating chamber directly at the back of the fire box that the heat at each side of the back wall thereof will be equal and the expansion or contraction equalized on each side of the wall preventing cracking of the wall due to uneven expansion and contraction thereof.
What I claim as my invention is In a stove having the usual walls and back fine leading to the chimney, the combination with the fire box having the usual back wall, of an oven spaced from the walls of the stove to form fines B B and B communicating with the back flue and having the front wall of the oven spaced from the back of the fire box to form a flue between the front wall or" the oven and the back Wall of the fire box, the said stove having an opening for the passage of air into the last mentioned flue located immediately to the back of the fire box wall, a division plate dividing the said fiue between the front Wall of the oven and the back wall of the fire box into two portions, the front portion being open at the bottom and communicating; with the bottom of the fire box and closed at the top and with which the aforesaid opening communicates, the other portion being open at the top and at the bottom and leading to the top and bottom of the oven, a baflle plate and a damper extending across the flue B to either allow the products of combustion to pass directly from the fire box over the oven to the oven door side thereof and then to the back flueor from the fire box around and beneath the oven to the flue B and from thence to the back flue leading to the chimney, as and for the purpose specified.
