ROTARY BLOVVEH.
inseam.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Gnonon G. lrlions, Jr., and RALPH C. ENYART, citizens of the United States, and residents of Connorsville, Fayette county, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Blowers, of which the following is a specification.
1n rotary blowers working under comparatively high pressure, the heat due to compression has been found in some cases to lead to undesirable results. To overcome this, provision has heretofore been made for circulating cooling water through the lobes of the impellers, but the construction, while accomplishing the desired results, has not been altogether satisfactory.
Our present invention relates to improved means for effecting the circulation of cooling water through the impellers and the improvements will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a diametrical section, in the plane of line a of Figs. 2 and 3, of an impeller fitted with our improved water-circulating means: Fig. 2 an end elevation of the same: Fig. 8 a vertical transverse section of a portion of the impeller, in the plane of line b of Fig. 1: and Fig. t a vertical section of the water inlet connection in the plane of line a of Figs. 2 and 3.
In the drawings :1, indicates an impeller of a rotary blower, illustrated as of the well known Roots type, the impeller being a hollow casting; 2, the chamber in one of the lobes of the impeller: 3, the chamber in the other lobe of the impeller: 4-, the shaft on which the impeller is firmly secured ,in the usual manner: 5, partitions arranged transversely in the chambers of the lobes to give strength to the impeller, these partitions having openings through them so that, while each partition divides the chamber of a lobe into two compartments, the two compart ments are in free communication with each other: 6, the recess usually provided in the hubs of impellers to avoid the necessity for making a fit between the hub and the shaft except at each end of the impeller: 7, apertures leading from this recess to the chambers of the impellers, preferably at those compartments of the chambers which are farthest from the end of the impeller at specification of Letters Patent.

which the cooling water is to be admitted: 8, an axial bore extending inwardly from one end of the impeller shaft: 9, a boss secured to the outer end of the shaft and havmg a circular exterior concentric with the shaft and provided with an axial bore: 10, a pipe having its inner end tightly fitted, as by screwing, to the inner end of the bore 8 of the shaft and having its outer end similarly secured to boss 9, the aXial bore of the boss forming an outward continuation of the bore of the pipe: 11, a passageway extending radially from the inner end of the axial bore of the pipe through the shaft and through the hub of the impeller and into a chamber in one of the lobes of the impeller 12, a water-supply pipe to deliver water through the bore of boss 9 and pipe 10: 13, a swivel connection, provided with a stuilingbox, connecting pipe 12 with boss 9 so that while the impeller and the shaft and the boss rotate pipe 12 may remain stationary: 14, that portion of the axial bore 8 of the shaft surrounding pipe 10, it being understood that bore 8 is larger than the exterior of pipe 10 so as to leave a water passage around the outside of the pipe: 15, a radial passage leading from the inner portion of bore 8 to the chamber of the lobe of the impeller opposite the lobe into which passage 11 leads: 1G, longitudinal passages formed in boss 9, their inner ends communicating with bore 8 of the shaft and their outer ends terminating at about the mid-length of boss 9: 17, radial passages extending from the outer ends of passages 16 and preferably through a collar formed on the boss: 18, a stationary casing surrounding the boss and the collar, this casing being diametrically divided so as to permit of its being put upon the boss, it being understood that this casing need not fit or touch the boss at any point: 19, a water-discharge pipe leading down from the casing: 20, lugs provided upon the wall of the casing to serve, if desired, in securing the casing against a fixed support, the casing of the blower for instance: and 21, annular projections inwardly from the side walls of casing 18, concentric with the aXis of the impeller, these projections freely straddling the collar of the boss containing the passages 17.
The cooling water entering inlet-pipe 12, prefe'ably being pumped thereinto, passes through the swivel connection and the axial bore of the boss and through pipe 10 and then through passage 11 into one of the compartments of lobe 2 of the impeller. From there the water goes into the other compartment of lobe 2, and thence through apertures 7 and recess 6 to a compartment of lobe 3, and thence to the other compartment of that lobe, and thence through passage 15 to the outer portion 1a of the axial bore of the shaft, and thence through passages 16 and 17 from which latter passages the water is thrown by centrifugal force into the casing, from which it departs by outlet pipe 19. The circulating water carries away heat from the impeller, and it is manifest that no close fitting of the casing with the boss is required to take care of the discharge water, no water-tight fits being required between casinglS and the boss, the conditions of construction being such that it is desirable that a'very liberal degree of looseness be provided between the boss and the contiguous portions of the casing.
