GUN-CARRIAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 1914.
Application filed February 14, 1913. Serial No. 748,412.
To all whom imag concern."` Be it known that I, ,EUGNE` SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the Republic of France, and resident'of Le Creuzot, Sane-et-Loire, France,-
have invented a new and useful 'Improvement in or Relating to Gun-Carriages, which is fully setforth inthe following specili- 'cation I Y,
This invention relates to gun carriagesof the lrindset forth in myprior British Pat' ent No.` 7265 of 1912. In the specification ofthis patent and in that of the application for British Patent No. 14663 of 1912 I have described a form of `gun carriage one of the essential characteristics of which is theV for-. mation of the rear portion of the trail by aframe the Vsides of which can be separated. These sides are carried by a basewhich is pivotally connected tothe trail body, this connection permitting the gun as ak whole to automatically adapt itself to the nature .of the ground so that perfect v transverse independence is obtained between the anchoring members and the trail body.
The present invention has for its object a special vconstructional form ofthis type of gun carriage. According to this invention the aforesaid transverse independence is obtained by means of apivotal connection between theaforesaid `base and the axle or a part integral therewith. In other words the base constitutes the under carriage and it is between this base and the axle or a part lixed on the axle that the longitudinal pivot is arranged. Y
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and'readily carried into effect the same will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan( Fig. 3 is a transverse section the parts being represented in the traveling position. Fig. Llis a section taken on the line A-A of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a similar section to that of Fig. 3 Vthe axle being represented in a different position relatively to the .frame,and`Fig.. 6 is a section taken on the line B-B in 5. 1
In accordance with the present invention the base b of the U-shaped frame b', b2
is carried directly by the axle p by means of a pivotal connection and consequentlyV the b2 of the frame are carried by arms orl brackets b5 integral with the carriage; in the example shown the said sides are provided with pivots b engaging in bearings t7 integral with lthe said brackets b5 in a manner similar to that described and illustrated in the specification of my application Vfor BritishPatent No. 14663 of 1912. Openings be are formed in the carriage b to receive the axle 79 and to allow relative movement between the latter and the frame.
The frame may be made rigid with the axle by means of a locking device such as that more particularly illustrated in Figs. 3 to 6. This device comprises two cams or locking lugs 1 pivotedpon the axle p; each of these cams or locking lugs is adapted to be brought at will into the locking position (Figs. 3 and 4) or moved aside into a position permitting of relative movement between the frame and axle as shown in Figs. 5 and 6( With this object each of the cams or locking lugs is under the control of a worm 2 carried inibosses 3 fixed to the axle and gearing with a Worm sector 4 integral with the said cam.
The upper carriage a in which the gun cradle is'mounted is guided on the part Z) and is connected thereto by a vertical pivot 5.
The elevating and traversing ofthe gun are eifected by means of any appropriate mechanism. 1
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is Y 1. In a gun carriage, the combination of an axle, a member having a pivotal connection with saidaxle to permit said member to be swung about an axisllying in the direction of .travel of the carriage, and means turning around said axle as a center for adj usting said member.
2. In a gun carriage, the combination of an axle, a member having a pivotal connection with said axle to permit said member to be swung about an axis lying in the direction -of travel of the carriage, and locking lugs movable about said axle for adjusting said member.
3. In a gun carriage, the combination of an axle, a member having a pivotal connection with said axle to permit said member to be swung about an axis lying in the direction of travel of said carriage, and means including cams movable about said axle for adj usting said member.
t. In a gun carriage, the combinationof an axle, a member having a pivotal connection with said axle to permit said member to be swung about an axis lying in the direction of travel of said carriage, means turning around said axle as a center for adjusting said member, and means associated with the last-named means for retaining said member iny adjusted position.
5. In a gun carriage, the combination vof an axle, a member having a pivotal connection with said axle, and means movable into engagement with the under side of said member on opposite sides of said pivotal connection for preventing relative movement between said member and axle during travel of the carriage and movable out of engagement with said member to permit the latter to swing about said pivotal connection when the gun is in firing position.
6. In a gun carriage, the combination of an axle, a member having a pivotal connection with said axle to permit said member to be swung about an axis lying in the direction of travel of said carriage, means including cams movable about said axle for adjusting said member, and means associated with the last-named means for retain-l ing said member in adjusted position.
7. In a gun carriage, the combination of an axle, a member having a pivotal connection with said axle to permit said member to be swung about an axis lying in the direction of travel of the carriage, brackets depending from said member and having elongated openings for receiving said axle, and means movable into engagement with the under side of said member on opposite sides of said pivotal connection for preventing relative movement between said member and axle during the travel of the carriage and movable out of engagement with said member to permit the latter to swing about said pivotal connection when the gun is in firing position.
