TANK-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 7, 1913.
Patented May 26, 1914.
serial No. 752,672.
T0 all w71 om, it may concern Beit known that I, FRED H. VOLLA LANGE- LAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the township of Keeler, Van Buren county, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank- Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates t-o improvements in tank heaters.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved tank heater which is very ecient, economical of fuel, easy to fire and control, and one which is easy to clean.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail plan view of my improved tank heater. Fig. II is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. I. Fig. III is a horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 3 3 of Fig. II.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines. I have not in the accompanying drawing, attempted to show the parts in their exact relative proportions.
The fire box 1 is provided with a vertical air inlet flue 2 on one side, opening into the re box below the grate 3. The flue is pref` erably formed integrally with one of the side walls. The cover l of the re box is common to both the re box and flue and is provided with a` damper 5 for the iue, the cover being hinged at 6 to the rear wall of the fire box. The grate 3 is removable, the grate bars 7 being preferably loosely arranged on the transverse supporting bars as illustrated. The drum 8 is substantially the same height as the fire box, and also substantially the same width. A plurality of flues 9 connect the upper end of the fire box with the upper end of the drum. The flues 9 are arranged in horizontal series, a double series being shown. The cover 10 of the drum is removable, being' provided with a downwardly projecting flange 11 telescoping into t-he top of the drum. The cover is provided with an upwardly projecting collar 12 for the chimney 13. The chimney is provided with a butterfly damper 14. The drum is preferably provided with a baiiie-plate 15 which is mounted on the cover to depend in front of the flues 9. A damper 16 is provided at the upper end of the baffle-plate so that the products of combustion may, when this damper is open, pass directly from the flues to the chimney. This is of advantage in starting the fire as a substantially direct draft may thus be secured. When this damper is closed, the products of combustion pass down into the drum about the lower edge of the baffle-plate to the chimney.
My improved tank heater is very eicient, as substantially all of the heat is taken from the products of combustion before the same pass from the chimney 13. It may be effectively controlled to regulate the fire as the amount of air delivered by the air inlet flue below the grate can be effectively regulated and also the draft through the drum.
In cleaning the fire box, the grate may be removed and the ashes taken out through the top of the fire box. The drum may be cleaned by lifting off the cover and the baflie-plate. A further advantage of the drum structure is that sparks are quite likely to be extinguished in the drum and not pass from the chimney.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a tank heater, the combination of a lire box provided with a grate and having a vertical air inlet flue integral with one of its side walls and opening into the fire box below the grate, a cover common to said fire box and flue, provided with a damper for the flue, a drum, the lower end of the drum being substantially in the plane of the lower end of the fire box, a plurality of flues horizontally arranged and connecting the upper part of the fire box with the upper part of the drum, a chimney for said drum, said drum being provided with a. removable cover having a chimney collar thereon, a flue baffle-plate carried by said drum cover and depending into said drum, a
damper for said bathe-plate carried by said drum cover, and a damper for said chimney.
2. In a tank heater, the combination of e re box provided with :L grate disposed toward the bottom thereof and having a vertical air inlet iue at one side opening into the fire box below the grate; a cover for seid iire box; a damper for said flue; a drum substantially spaced from said fire box, the lower end of the drum being substantially in the plane of the lower end of Ithe fire box so that both are adapted to rest on the bottom of the tank; a plurality of connect-ing flues for said fire box and drum disposed horizontally near the high water level of said heater, seid lines being connected to the fire box opposite the air inlet iiue thereof; a chimney for said drinn, and a batie for said drum whereby the products of combustion delivered into said drum from said flues are caused to circulate within the drum.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED H. VOLLA LANGELAN.
