To all whomt may concern:
i Becit known that we, WILLIAM CABEY and ISAAG Lsssss, both subjects of the of Great Bi-itain, and -residents of Kingston, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented a neWTnd Improved Magneto, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a high-tension magneto characterized by an entirely inclosed structure,-whereby exposed wirng is done away with, the mechanism being therean arrangement of parts whereby the cur rent is delivered at maximum i'ntensity over a long range, due to the relaton of the ar i mat-ure' and primary circuit breaker when the parts are adjusted in advance or retard position.

The elements making up the mechanisn i are contained in a casng that is substantially waterproof, 'and consisting of the upper part 1 having the top 2 of insulating material. and the bottom part 3 having an opening 4 therethrough. the shaft 5 passing through the opening into the-interior of the casing. The lower part 3, or, in fact, either of the parts of themechanism, provided with ar's 13 havingopenings therein through which suitable securing means, such as bolts or screws, may be passed in order to maintain the nechanism in position on a .suitable support.
Extending upwardly into the interior of the casing and mounted on the said shaft 5,
horseshoe type, carrying II'OII pole faces 15, the said magnet being provided with an opening 16 extending therethrough into which the shaft extends, the relation of the parts being maintained by means of a transversely extending pin 17. This shaft 5 is provided With a 'shoulder 18, and beneath the shoulder is a cup 19. between which and a second cup 20 sccured to the said casing are a number of balls 21, whereby a substantially frictionless turning is provided. The lower end of the casing is preferably provided with a washer 22 of any suitable material, such as felt, retained in position by means of the thraded cap 23. a structure in the nature of a stufiing box being therely provided. and tending to prevent the entrance of dust or moisture into the casing. As the magnet operates the .turning of the shaft brings the projections 26 on the side of the sleeve 25 into engagement with the roller 76 on the bell crank 73, thereby periodicallv making and breaking contact between the latinum points 79-80 and opening and closing the circuit through the pri'nary winding 67 by reason of the said groun 82-84. It will be remembered that the ii per part 1 of the casin was described as being adjustable relatvely to the lower part 3, being held in adjusted position by reason of the openings 11 in the shoulder 10 (Fig. 2) into which the spring-pressed plunger 14 was adapted to engage; it being clear then that the relation between the make and break of the circuit breaker' and the said primary circuit, and thej times at which current is supplied be varied,

After a consideratin of the'descriptionfi'n connection with the drawings,-'it will be apparent that a mechanism has been described which fulfils the purposes of the invention as set forth in the beginning of the specification, the relative size and location of the parts being merely typical of one embdimnt of the invention, t being clear that the inventive idea may be comprehended ?in structures which may vary 'in size and appearance. but are representative ofsuch inventiye idea. a
.Having thus described our invention,
what we claim as new and desre to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A mechanism of the class described, comprising a revoluble permanent magnet of horseshoe form supported at its ends, one. of the said supports forming a shatt whereby the magnet may be retated, the said shaft having its end extending through an opening in the magnet, a core between the sides of the magnet, and nounted on the said end of the shaft, the said core having a plurality of independent windings thei-con, a distributing device for the induced current, and means actua-ted by the rotation of the magnet and including a movable contact member for controlling said distributing device whereby the current induced in the windings may be placed in circuit at proper times with independentcoperating devices.
2. A mechanism of the class described,
comprising a permanent magnet of horseshoe form supported at both ends, a core between the sides of the magnet and having a plurality of windings thereon, one of the supports .of the said magnet beinga shaft whereby the magnet may be rotated, and means actuated by the turning of the magnet and including a movable contact member whereby the current induced in the Windings may be placed in circuit atproper times with independent coperating devices.
3. A mechanism of the class described, comprising a revoluble magnet, and a stationary c'ore carrying windings in which current is induced, said mechanism also ,comprising a distributing plate and a movable brush, the brush coming into contact with different portions of the said pla'te 'whereby different circuits are placed in communication in the said windings.
4. In a magneto electric machine, a revoluble permanent magnet, a core adjacent the magnet having primary and secondary windings thereon, means for revolving said magnet, a distributing plate having a central contact member and a plurality of sepa rate contact members, the contact members being insulated from each other, the central contact member having a downwardly extendin portion, a conducting rod connected with t e-secondary winding and having an enlarged upper end forming a pocket, a spring in said pocket making electrical contact between the conducting rod and the downwardly extending portion of the central contact member, a spring controlled contact member, and means for driving said contact member from said revoluble magnet, the said spring controlled contact mem, ber being in contact with said central member of the distributing plate and adapted to connect the same successively with the other members of said plate.
15. In a magneto electric machine, a casing comprising an upper and a lower member, a revoluble shaft extendin'g into the lowermember of the casing, a permanent magnet within said member of the casing and carried by said shaft, a distributing plate carried at the upper portion of the upper member of the casing, a core between the sides of the magnet and carrying a plurality of windings, means actuated by the turning of the magnet for bringing the several parts of the distributing plate into circuit 'with one of the windings, a circuit breaker in the circuit of the other Winding and actuated from the shaft of said magnet, one of the members of the casing being mounted to turn relatively to the other member, whereby the distributing plate, may be brought into different positions relatively to the circuit breaking device and the times at which current is supplied to the different portions of said distributing plate may be varied, and means for holding the said movable member of the casing in the adjusted position.
