To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES CUNo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, countyof New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magneto Interrupters and Timers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to electrical apparatus, and is particularly concerned with improvements in the construction and arrangement of the interrupter or circuit breaker and of the distributer of magneto electric machines, which are especially, though not exclusively, adapted for use in ignition systems for internal combustion engines.
The object of my invention is to provide a construction of interrupter which may be easily inspected while in operative position, and at the same time may be completely and bodily removed from the magneto for adjustment and repair.
A further object is to provide an adjustment of the contact members of the interrupter and of the distributer with respectto the operating lever of the interrupter to readily adapt the magneto for both right and left drive, whereby the magneto as a whole may be mounted upon either side or at either the front or rear of the driving mechanism.
A further object is to provide for easy I relative adjustment of the Contact points of the interrupter without disturbing the mounting of the contact arms.
The invention further contemplates means for readily shifting the distributer arm of 'the distributer to correspond with the adjustment of the interrupter. for right and left drive.

In the embodiment of my invention herein selected for illustration, the magneto proper comprises the base 1 on which are mounted the usual field magnets 2 (Fig. 4.), between the poles of which is mounted the armature 3 'carried by the shaft 4. The magnets and armature are preferably inclosed within a casing comprising end plates 56 and the sheathing 7, by which the internal mechanism of the magneto is eifectively protected from dirt and moisture. The magneto armature herein shown is of the usual low tension type operating with the field magnets, the general construction and arrangement of which are illustrated in my co-pending application, Serial No. 539,059 filed 0n the 20th dayof January, 1910, to which reference is made for a full and detailed description of the parts cooperating with the invention herein described.
The armature shaft 4 as shown in Fig. 4 passes through the end plate 5 and is journaled within a plate 9 fixed to the lower portion of the end plate' 5 and said plate 9 has formed thereon a cup bearing 10 for the reception of the interrupter carrier. The interrupter comprises the annular carrier 11, Figs. 4c, 6 and 7', preferably having a .mounted on the armature shaftr4. In the preferred form, these cam pins 19 consist of pins frictionally mounted longitudinally in bores in the armature shaft 4, and lying partially within the circumference of the outer end of said shaft, and on opposite sides thereof. As shown in Fig. 12 the pins 19 preferably project beyond the end of the armature shaft 4 and are provided with grooves 19 for engagement by pliers to facilitate removal of the pin. With this construction a filler washer 19 is provided having notches 19 fitting over the pins, to
fill the space between the end of the shaftv and the insulation for the contact pin 32 and to support said insulation. The roller 18 of the movable contact member 14, as indicated in Fig. 4, rides upon a reduced portion of the armature shaft and over the pins 19 to effect the interruption of the circuit. With the arrangement of the cam pins described, the latter may readily be adjusted to take up wear, by merely turning them up slightly to present a new surface to the anti-friction roller 18. The ends of the pin may be notched to facilitate this operation by a screw driver.
The fixed contact member 13 of the interrupter is mounted upon, but insulated from, the base plate 15 and carries an adjustable contact point 13 for the convenient adjustment of which the wall of the annu lar carrier 11 is provided with openings 11*, 11 Figs-6 and 7.
The adjusting lever 22for the interrupter is preferably fixed to the annular carrier 11,
whereby the interrupter member may be shifted within the bearing 10 to vary the time of the breaking of the circuit with respect to the movement of the distributer arm.
By the construction above described, it will be seen that the interrupter mechanism may be bodily removed from the bearing 10 after disconnecting the lever 22 from its operating connections.
' In order to determine the limit of adjustment of the interrupter with respect to the cam pins 19 on the armature shaft, the rear of the interrupter .carrier is provided with a stop pin 23, (Figs. 6 and 7), adapted to engage either one of similar slots 2424 formed in the bottom of the bearing 10, ac-- holes 2525 and shifting the plate 15'carrying the contactmembers, 90 and again securing said plate in place by introducing screws 16 into the second set of screw holes 25 --25 (Fig. 6.) The interrupter carrier may then be replaced in the bearing 10 in reversed position or with lever 22 extending to the side opposite its first position and will be then adapted to a reverse drive.
Simultaneously with this shifting of the interrupter, th'e distributer is also shifted as later described.
The interrupter carrier 11 is provided with a removable cap 26 which may be held in placein any desired manner, but as here shown is provided with an improved slid-.
ing spring latch arm 27 having a key-hole slot 27 fitting over a headed pin 28 mounted in the support 29 carrying the distributer mechanism hereinafter to be described. The upper end of latch arm 27 engages a stud 30 mounted on the cap or cover 31 inclosing the distributer. The lower end of the latch arm is provided with slot 27 sliding on an insulating bushing on terminal stud 34, the face of said latch being in electrical engagement with the cap'26 to ground the stud 30 as set forth in my copending application 539,059 aforesaid. To remove the cap 26 from the interrupter it is only necessaryto slide the latch arm 27 upwardly by means of its handle 27 until the larger portion of the key-hole slot 27 a comes opposite the stud head 28, whereupon the latch arm will spring free of the stud 28, and release both the caps 26 and 31 of the interrupter.
The electrical connections for the interrupter mechanism are effected as follows: Extending through the armature shaft 4 and insulated therefrom is a headed pin, indicated at-32, (Figs. 3 and 4), which is connected with the armature winding by.
means of a wire 33, Fig. 4. The cap 26 is provided with a terminal stud 34 insulated from said cap, asshown in Fig. 10, and carrying a brush contact 36 adapted to make electrical connection with the head of pin 32 at the. end of the armature shaft when the cap is secured in position. Surrounding the stud 34 a and in electrical connection therewith, but insulated from the cap 26'is a disk 37, and mounted upon the fixed member 13 of the interrupter is a contact brush 38 adapted to engage the disk 37 when the cap is in position. Thus the armature circuit will be carried through the pin 32, brush 36, disk'37 and brush 38 to the fixed contact member 13 of the interrupter and when the interrupter points are in contact, it will be immediately grounded in the usual manner. The stud 34 has also a binding post or terminal head 39 from which a suitable connection may be made with the transformer coil in the manner indicated in my co-pending application hereinbefore referred to. When the armature circuit is broken at the interrupter points, the current instead of being immediately grounded through the movable interrupter contact member 14 will necessarily pass to the transformer coil through the terminal head 39 and to the connection leading therefrom.
Having thus described the construction and arrangement of the interrupter mechanism, it now remains to describe the construction by which the distributer arm may be adjusted or shifted to correspond to the 'adjustments of the interrupter mechanism for right and left drive.
A distributor is located in the usual manner just above the interrupter and it comprises the several distributer segments 40, Fig. 3, which are suitably connected .as at 41 to terminal heads 42, to which the connections with the spark plugs may be attached. The distributer arm 43 extends radially from a hub 44, which is removably and adjustably mounted upon a gear wheel 45, Fig. 4, driven by a gear wheel 46 on the armature shaft 4, said gears being proportioned in the usual manner. The electrical connection of the distributer arm with the secondary winding of the transformer is not here shown, as this forms no part of the present invention. In order to shift the distributer arm relatively to the distributer segments 40 to correspond to the adjustments of the interrupter for right or left drive, the gear wheel 45 is preferably provided with two threaded holes, Fig. 3, in
, either of which may be mounted a pin '49.
44 is a hole or recess in the rear of the hub 44 of suitable size to receive pin 49-. When the distributer is adjusted for a righth'and drive, the pin 49 will be mountedas shown in Fig. 3 to properly position the distributer arm with respect to the cam pins 19l9. When the interrupter is adjusted for left-hand drive, the pin 49 will be shifted to the other opening in the end of gear 45.
Having described the construction and arrangement of the interrupter and distributer in detail separately, I will now explain briefly the method of manipulation by which these parts maybe quickly adjusted relatively for right and left drive of the magneto shaft,.whereby the device is adapted for universal application in any required position relative to the driving connections.
The gear46 is so mounted onthe shaft 4- with respect to the cam pins 19; the threaded holes for the reception of the pin 49 (designated for convenience L and R, respectively) are so arranged on the gear 45, and the gears are so relatively arranged initially as to bring'the parts into the position shown in Fig. 3 for right hand drive. It is to be understood that in this position the plate 15 carrying the fixed and movable interrupter contacts 13 and 14 respectively, is secured to the flange 12 of interrupter carrier 11 through the holes 2525, designated for convenience RR e. for right hand drive). For earliest sparking, the lever 22 will extend to the right at an angle of about 45 above the horizontal, as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 3, as determined by the pin 23 Fig. 6 on the back of the carrier '11 and'the slot 24 Fig. 5 in the bottom of the cup bearing 10. Now as the magneto shaft 4 turns to the right or clockwise, as viewed in Fig. 3, the distributer arm and contacts and the interrupter contacts and cam pins will be properly positioned for the required timing. T-o shift these parts for lefthand drive of the magneto shaft, it is only necessary to slip the carrier 11 out of the hearing 10, shift the plate 15 and secure it through the holes 25 -25 (L-L) Fig.6 and shift the pin 49 of the distributer arm from hole R to hole L and finally replace the carrier 11 in the bearing 10 with arm 22 extending to the left (see dotted positionFig.
when the arm will again be in upper position for early sparking and the mechanism be ready for left hand drive as viewed in Fig. 3.
From the above described construction it will be seen that the interrupter may be readily inspected .while in operative position by simply removing the cap, and furthermore, the interrupter as a whole may bereadily removed bodily fromits support for inspection and repair and also for the relative adjustment offthe contact points. Moreoverflchis permits the shifting of the plate 15 carrying the interrupter members in the manner hereinbefore described, for
right or left drive.
What I claim is:
1. An interrupter for ignition mechanism, comprising in combination a fixed contact member, a movable contact member, means for actuating said movable member, a shift able carrier forsaid members having an open front, means whereby said contact members may be shifted on said carrier to adapt said interrupter for right and left drive, and a cap covering the open front of said carrier removable to permit inspection of the entire interrupter mechanism when in Operative, position.
2. An interrupter for ignition mechanism, comprising a fixed contact member, a movable contact member, means for operating said movable member, a ring carrier for said members having an open. central shaft passage, said members being located on the exposed side of said carrier, a bearing for said carrier, said carrier, together with said contact members, being adapted to be removed bodily from said bearing.
3. An interrupter for ignition mechanism, comprising in combination a fixed contactmember, a movable contact member, means for operating said movable member, a carrier for said members, abearing for said carrier constructed and arranged to permit the removal of said carrier and members bodily therefrom, and apertures in the side wall of said carrier normally covered by said bearing and rendered accessible by such removal to permit adjustment of the contact points of said members relatively,to each other'without removing the members from said carrier.
' 4:. In combination, a magneto including a frame having a bearing, an armature journaled in said frame, an interrupter carrier mounted in said bearing and surrounding the shaft of said armature and carrying two contact members, one of which is movable means on said armature for operating said movable member, said carrier being constructed and arranged to be bodily removed from said bearing together with said contact members and replaced in said bearing in reverse position, and means whereby said contact members may be simultaneously adjusted on said carrier to adapt said interrupter mechanism for right and left drive, means for shifting said carrier and contact members in either position, with respect to saidshaft, for timing purposes, and means for limiting such shifting movement in either position.
5. In combination, a magneto including a frame having a bearing and an armature, a carrier having an open front mounted in said bearing and surroundin the shaft of said armature, a support shiftable in said carrier, a fixed contact member and a movable contact member carried on the outer side of said support, means on said shaft for operating said movable member, and
means to establish the position of said shiftable support on said carrier for either a right or left drive, said carrier being constructed and arranged to permit the inspection of the interrupter mechanism when in operative position.
6. In combination, a magneto including an armature and a distributer, a carrier surrounding the shaft of said armature and carrying a fixed contact and amovable contact, means on said shaft to operate said movable contact, said contacts being constructed and arranged to be adjusted within, and relatively to, said carrier to adapt the interrupter to right and left drive, a gear on the armature shaft, a second gear driven thereby, a removable distributer arm carried by said second gear, means for adjustably mounting said distributer arm on its gear and means. for coordinating said adjustments with the adjustment of the interrupter mechanism for right and left drive.
7. In combination, a magneto including an armature, a shaft therefor, a reversible contact carrier surrounding one end of said' shaft, a bearing for said carrier, an adjustable support within said carrier, contact members mounted on the outer side of the latter, one of said contacts being movable, means on said shaft for operating said movable contact member, and means to estab lish the position of said shiftable support on said carrier for either a right or left hand drive.
8. In combination, a magneto including an armature, a shaft, a shiftable carrier surrounding said shaft, two contact members carried by said carrier, one of the same being movable, means on said shaft for operating the latter, an armature terminal mounted in said shaft, a removable cap for said carrier having a contact brush mounted thereon for removal therewith adapted to engage said terminal,- a contact point on said fixed contact member, and means for causing said contact point to eflect electrical connection with said contact brush when the cap is in position on said carrier.
9. In combination, a magneto including an armature, a shaft therefor, a shift-able carrier surrounding said shaft, a fixed contact member and a movable contact member mounted in said carrier, means on said shaft to operate said movable member, an armature terminal mounted in said shaft, a cap removably mounted on said carrier, and means for automatically efi'ectin electrical connection between said termina and said fixed contact member when said cap is positioned on said carrier.
10. In combination, a magneto including an armature, a shaft therefor, a carrier surrounding said shaft, two contact members, one being movable and mounted in said carrier, a cam member onsaid shaft to operate said movable member, the cam being adjustably mounted on said shaft and relatively to said movable contact member to present fresh bearing surfaces to said member to compensate for wear.
11. An interrupter for ignition mechanism, comprising a magneto including an able to permit inspection of said armature and armature shaft, a carrier surrounding the end of the shaft of said armature, a fixed contact and a movable contact mounted in said carrier, a pin located longitudinallyin and partially embedded within the circumference of said shaft, the projecting portion of said pin cooperating with said movable contact to operate the latter, said pin being arranged to be turned to present to said movable contact different operating surfaces.
12. An interrupter for ignition mechanism, comprising in combination a magneto including an .armature, an armature shaft, a gear on said shaft, a second gear driven by the first, and a rotatable distributer including a laterally extending 'distributer arm carried by said second gear, a carrier surrounding the shaft of said armature, a fixed contact and a movable contact mounted in said carrier, and including a shiftable contact support, means on said shaft for op erating said movable contact, means to establish the position of said shiftable support on said carrier for either a right or left rotation of saidshaft, and means for correspondingly shifting said distributer arm to coiiperate with the adjustment of.
said interrupter contacts.
13. An interrupter for ignition mechanism comprising two contact members, one of which is movable, means for operating the movable member periodically, an open front detachable ringsupport upon which said members are mounted, and a cap covering the open front of said support remove members when in operative position.
14. An interrupter for ignition mechanisms comprising two members, one of which is movable, means for operating the movable-member periodically, a detachable ring support open at its outer end and carrying said members at its inner end, and a removable cover for the outer end of said ring support.
15. An interrupter for ignition mecha-.
nisms comprising two members, one of which is movable, means for operating the movable member periodically, an annular plate support upon the outer side of which said members are mounted, and a shiftable carrier for said plate, said plate being adjustable in said carrier to change the position of said movable member relatively to its operating means. v
16. An interrupter for ignition mecha nisms, comprising two members, one of which is movable, means for operating ,the movable member periodically, a detachable ring support for both of said members, a bearing support for said ring, said ring being adjustable therein to change the position of the same relatively to said operating means for the movable contact member, one
of said contact members being adjustable, and an opening in said ring to afford access thereto, said opening being closed by said bearing when the parts-are assembled.
- In a magneto, an interrupter comprislng two contacts, one of which is movable, means for periodically operating said movable contact, means for driving the lat ter 1n one direction or the other, a support for said contacts, means for shifting said contacts relatively to the means for operatmg the movable contact, a distributer includlng a distributer arm, means for rotatmg the distributer arm and operating the movable contact of the interru ter in synchronism, and means for bodily shifting the parts of the interrupter and the distributer arm a predetermined and correright or left hand drive, said means being means for the interrupter.
18. An interrupter for ignition mechanism comprising a magneto including an armature, an armature shaft, a carrier surrounding the-end of the; shaft of said armature, a fixed contact and a movable contact spending amount to adapt the magneto to i lndependent of the first mentioned shifting mounted on said carrier, a pin located longitudinally in and partially embedded within the circumference of said shaft, the projecting portion of said pin c'otiperating with said movable contact to operate the latter, said pin having tool engageable means to facilitatewithdrawal thereof from said shaft. An interrupter for ignition mechanlsm, comprising a magneto including an armature, an armature shaft, a carrier surrounding the end of the shaft of said armature, a fixed contact and a movable contact mounted on said carrier, a pin located longitudinally in and partially embedded within the circumference of said shaft, the projecting portion of said pin coiiperating with said movable'contact to operate the latter,
said pin projecting beyond the end of said shaft and having tool engageable means on said projecting portions to facilitate removal of the pin from the shaft.
20. An interrupter for ignition mechanism, comprising a magneto including an armature, an armature shaft, a carrier surrounding the end of the shaft of said armature, a fixed contact and a movable contact mounted on said carrier, a pin located longitudinally in and partially embedded within the circumference of said shaft, the projecting portion of said pincooperating with saidmovable contact to operate the latter, said pin projecting beyond the end of said shaft and having tool engageable means on said projecting portion to facilitate removal of the pin from the shaft, an insulated headed contact terminal mounted longitudinally in said shaft, and a filler washer on the end of i the shaft flush with the outer end of said armature, an armature shaft, a carrier surrounding the end of the shaft of said armature, a fixed contact and a movable contact mounted on said carrier, a pin located 1ongitudinally in and partially embedded within the circumference of said shaft, the projecting portion of said pin cooperating with said movable cont-act to operate the latter,
said pin having tool engageable means to facilitate withdrawal thereof from said 1.5 shaft, said pin being arranged to be turned to present diiferent operating surfaces to said movable cont-act.
