Application filed J nuar eo, 1914. Serial No. 813,191.
To all whom it may concern :1 i
Be it known that I, Roscoe BEAN, a citizen of the United States, residin atBerea, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Toy Pistols, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to improvementsv in toy pistols, and more particularly to that class or type known as repeating toy pistols 1n which a series of percussion caps are arranged in-a long-strip of-paper and are automatically and successively fed between auanvil and a hammer with each pull of the trigger of'the pistol.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a generally improved pistol of this class in which ,the general form of thepistol and the action ofits parts'shall simulate that of a regular automatic pistol, as well V as one in which'the action of the parts shall be positive, .i which, the, feed of-the fulminatest'ripshal be-1inder complete and accurate control, and in which the general arrangement andcombination of-theparts'will be simplified and improved.
A still further ob ect 13 to provide an improved'hammer and trigger and means for mounting the same whereby the liability to damage or disarrangement will be reduced to a minimum and a more easily operated repeating pistolwill "result.
A still further object is to provide an i111- proved trigger for this class of pistols which by being extended beyond the trigger guard enables the same to be operated bytwo fin gers instead of one and enables the same'to be more easily operated without injury to the finger or liability of the latter to become pinched in betweenth'e free end of the tr1ggerand the trigger guard as sometimes 00-,
ours with the ordinary short form of trigger arrangedwithin and stopping short of the trigger guard.
A still further ob ect 1s to improve the connection'between the trigger and hammer whereby the latter willbe moved or cocked against the resistance of the hammer spring by a direct pull of the trigger engaging on (ipposite sides of the hammer;
With the above mentioned and other ends iii view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in" one of its embodiments inthe accompanying.
'the stationary,
free end of sai spring bearing against the 110 drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. v
' Referring to the drawings, forming apart of this specification Figure 1, is-a side eleva- ;t1pn of the improved pistol, one side of the pistol body or casing being removed for the purpose, of clearer illustration of the parts.
Fig. 2, a central longitudinalsectional view showing the parts in their retracted-positions just prior to the release of the hammer in the firing operation. Fig. 3, a vertical cross sectional view taken: on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. fl, a rear view. of the trigger and its mount ng within the pistol body 'or casing. Fig. 5, a rear view 'of-the'hammer, 7Q
detached, showing the fulminatestrip actuating or feeding member carried thereby. Fig. 6, across sectional view of thehammer taken online 6-6 of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference designate 75.-
like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved toy pistol comprises a pisto'l body or'casing preferably made up of 7 two primary parts to form the barrel 1, and
handle 2. The parts are preferably made. of cast metal sections which'when fastened together form a hollow chamber within which the'working mechanismof the pistol is located.
The handle .2, is provided with a movable back 3, pivoted at its top between the side vgalls' of the casing as at 3, to form amanvil 3 and provided at its bottom with a side extension 3, said side extension 3, being 9 0v provided with a supporting pin 3*, for carrying a roll of fulfn'inate strip 4. By mov- 'ing the back 3, rearwardly the roll of fulmi- .nate strip may be readily mounted uponv or removed from the pin 3, and one end of the 96 fulminate 'strip is adapted to be placed in front of the back 3, and to extend upwardly and over the anvil 3", and over which latter it is fed by the strip feeding mechanism carriedby the hammer hereinafter described. 100
As a means for holding the fulminate strip 8, in frictional contact with'the back 3, so as tcrprevnt retrograde movement thereof in the movements of the hammer and feeding mechanism, a flat strip holding 1015 spring- 5, is provided which spring 5, is
mounted and held in position within the handle by means of pins 6, extending from rtion of the handle, the
.pistol body.
fulininate strip between the anvil 3, and the roll carried upon the supporting pin 3.
The improved hammer comprises a hammer head 7, projecting upwardly and adapted to strike against the anvil 3?, and. a main body portion pivotal'ly mounted between the;
side walls of the pistol body by means-of laterally extending bearing pins. or trun-' other end bearing against an abutment or stud 1, formedon one of the sections of the As a. means for properly feeding the fulminute strip over andacross. theanvil during each working impulse or cocking movement'of the hammer, the latteris provided with an extension portion 7 carrying a strip feeding spring member 8, said feeding spring 8, in the present instance, comprising a single length ofwire bent upon itself forming a loop head 8, fitted in a notch 8", at the lower side of the extension .7 the sides of thespring 'forming spring ar'ms normally resting against a cross bar 7", of the hammer extension,'said spring arms being adapted to engage at opposite-points on the fulminate strip in front of the back 3, as shown most clearly in ,Fig. 1, of the drawings and as the hammer is moved to its cocked position as shown in'Fig. 2, it is obvious that the spring arms of the member 8, willmom or feed the fulminate a requisite distance to bring the percussion cap upon the .anvil 3",
prior to the release of the hammer by the trigger hereinafter described.
As a means for operating the hammer a trigger 9, is provided said trigger 9, preferably comprising a single length of wire bent upon itself formingan operating. loop 9?,
extending beyond and adapted to be guided by the trigger guard 10, and as a means for conveniently mounting the trigger one of -the side members 15 bent about to form a bearing c0119", which bearing C011 9*, is
adapted to be mounted upon a bearing pin 11, extending from one of the side sections of the pistol body.
As a means for actuating or returning the trigger to its initial or normal position a coiled spring 12, is provided, said coil spring 12, being mounted upon the bearing pin 11, one end 12, being adapted to'cngage one side of .the trigger'and the other end 12,
engaging and bearing against a lug or abutment 13, formed integral-with one'of the I side sections of the pistol'body, and as a means for holding the 12 in proper '7 as shown.
and ride upon the shoulders assembled position and particularly as against lateral creeping or displacement a securing stud pin 14, extends from and is carried by the opposite pistol section, the end of said stud pm bearing against the end. 12",
.moving and releasing the hammerin the operation of the same through the trigger said hammer is provided on opposite sides with oppositely arranged beveled shoulders 7,
adapted to be alternately engaged and released by the laterallymovable spring arms 9 of the trigger said arms straddling or extending on opposite sides of the Web portion of the hammer carrying the beveled shoulders As the trigger is drawn rearwardly in the cocking movement of the hammer the arms 9, are in en agemeiit with %f,the hammer and trigger being moved'againstthe resistance of the respective springs 8, and 12, and when the hammer and trigger are moved to a position slightly beyond that indicated in Fig.- 2, the arms 0, will snap beneath the shoulders 7 to permit the hammer to be released and strike against the anvil in the firing operation. When pressure is released upon the .trigger, the latter is returned through the agency of the arm 12, of the spring 12, and in so doin the laterally movablearins' 9, are caused to ride upon and move over the beveled portions of the shoulders 7*, after which they Will sna inwardly into engagement with the shoul ers in the repeating or successive firing operation.
