T o all whom t may concern Be it known that we, FRANK MaNDLnrc and EDWARD Kovoiuir, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Delmont, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being liadtherein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches, and
more particularly to that type of wrenchv ordinarily used for rotating nuts and bodies having flat facets.
The primary object of our invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter setforth, a quick act-ing nut wrench means to cooperate with the movable jaw thereof in holding the jaw in adjusted position.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of they same, showing .certain parts thereof in adjusted positions in dotted lines, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detached 'gripping member, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a detached locking pawl, Fig. 5-is -a similar view of a detached locking cam, and Fig. 6'is a lon-` gitudinal sectional view of a portion of the wrench showing one .of the tools thereof in an active position.
Further describing our invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals denote corresponding parts throughout: 1 denotes a shank, rectangular in cross section, said;
shank having the outer end thereof provided with a fixed or integral jaw `2 having a flat gripping surface 3 extending at right angles to the front side of the shank 1. The inner end of the shank 1 is reduced and terminates in a cylindrical stem 4, said stem having a longitudinal cylindrical pocket 5 with the inner endthereof exteriorly screw threaded, as at 6.
7 denotes a longitudinal groove formed in the front side of the shank 1, said groove being in communication with an opening 8 formed in the jaw 2. The groove 7 terminates in proximity to the reduced end or stem 4 of the shank and the inner end of said groove is in communication with a recess 9. The rear. wall of the groove has two recesses 10 and l1, the vpurpose of which will presently appear.
12 denotes a rack or toothed bar located within the groove 7 and said bar has the front side thereof provided with teeth 13. The outer end of the bar terminates in a screw driver or chisel head 14 and the inner end ofA said bar is cylindrical7 as at 15 to ext-end into the recess 9. The inner end of the bar 12 has an angle slot 16 in which is located a spring pressed angle locking member 17 that is pivotally mounted upon a transverse pin 18, carried by the bar 12. One end of the member 17 is exposed at the front side of the bar whereby it can be pressed by the finger to remove the opposite headed end 19 out of t-he recess 10 of the shank 1. The headed end 19 of said member is held normally in the recess 10 by a coiled compression spring 20 located within the slot 16. By shifting the rack bar 12 after the headed end 19 of the member 17 has been shifted out of the recess 10, the screw driver or chisel head 14 of the rack bar protrudes from thejaw 2 and said bar can be locked in an extended position by the headed end 19 of the member 17 engaging .in the recess 11. rlhe wrench can therefore v22 embracing said shank. The jaw 21 presents la flat gripping surface 23 at right angles to the shank 1 and confronting the flat gripping surface 3 of the jaw 2. The front side of the adjustable jaw 21 has a large slot or recess 24 and pivotally mounted in said recess by a transverse pin 25 is a gripping member 26 having transverse teeth 27 normally held in engagement with the teeth 13 of the rack bar 12. Easy access is had to the recess 24 through the medium of a detachable side plate 28 and this side plate, in some instances, can be made integral with the adjustable jaw 21.
The gripping member 26 is slotted, as at `29 and pivotally mounted in said slot, by a said spring engaging the pawl and the other convolution being seated in the gripping member 26.
33 denotes a ca i member pivotally mounted in the recess 2i by a transverse pin 34h The cam member has a lever 35 provided with a cross head 36 and this cross head can be seated in a transverse groove 37 provided therefor in the front side of the adjustable jaw 2l.
3S denotes a coiled compression spring arranged within the recess 2l and seated in the gripping member 2G, said spring shifting the gripping member out of engagement with the rack bar l2, when the locking pawl 3l is shifted, as will presently appear.
89 denotes a tubular handle arranged upon the reduced end or stem il of the shank l, said handle having the inner end thereof provided with a nut or cap Ll that is interiorly screw threaded to screw upon the exteriorly screw threaded end of the stem et. The threaded bore of the nut al() is longitudinally slotted, as at Lil, and said slot receives a lug 4t2, oi a collar 43, carried by a tool 44; arranged within the pocket 5 of the stem l. The tool la can be in the iorm of a punch or auger and said tool is retained therein by a tubular headed screw ll5 screwed into the nut against the collar 43. The tool el-l can be oi special construction, as shown in F ig. G and to place the tool in use it is only necessary to remove the screw 45, withdraw the tool, invert the same, again place it in position and return the screw i5 to its ordinary position. lVhen the tool is not in use it is housed within the stem d and as the stem is housed within the handle 39, the tool cannot interfere with the use of the wrench or the use of the raclr bar 12 as a screwdriver or for other purposes.
To adjust the jaw 2l the cross head 36 is shifted out of the groove 37 after which the locking lever is swung outwardly whereby the cam 33 is shifted out of engagement with the gripping member 26, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and consequently out of engagement with the pawl 31. lith the cam in this position the jaw 2l can be shifted toward the fixed jaw 2 to engage the facets of a nut or other structure. After the jaw 2l has been firmly adjusted the cam 33 can be restored to its normal position to retain the gripping member QG in engagement with the rack bar 1Q, which is nondisglaceable relatively to the shank l, except when manually adjusted.
ilhile in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of our invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such niodilications and variations as fall within. the scope of the appended claim.
A wrench. of the type described comprising a shank, a jaw iiXed to the outer end thereof, a rack bai` mounted in said shank, a jaw adjustably mounted in said shank, a gripping member located within said jaw and engaging said rack bar, a spring pressed pivoted locking pawl carried by the adjust able jaw and normally engaging said gripping member, a shiftable cam carried by said j aw and engaging said gripping member, and a locking lever carried by said cam and provided with means engaging said pawl whereby the latter' is locked to maintain said gripping member engaging with said pawl.
