HENRY R. PALMER, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY R. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of Diego and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to advertising devices, the primary objectof the invention being to provide an advertising device de signed to embody within a minimum area a maximum amount of advertising surface.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide an advertising device including a cas ing and a plurality of rotary drums or cylinders, one of which is positively driven from a source of power, and the other or others driven by friction therefrom, thus enabling the device to be operated to successfully display advertising matter upon the cylinders at a minimum cost.
A still further object of the invention is to provide sign bearing cylinders constructed and arranged in a novel manner and provided with friction bands for communicating motion from one to the other and serving also to provide proper clearance spaces between the cylinders.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of an advertising device embodying my nvention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through a portion thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical front to rear section through the advertising device. Fig. 4: is a detail view of one of the sign bearing cylinders.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates an inclosing case or cabinet, preferably of rectangular or oblong rectangular form and having a suitable transparent front wall, which may be formed by one or more hinged doors 2. Arranged within the casing is a series of horizontal transverse shafts 3, which are fixed at their ends in the side walls of the casing, and on each of these shafts is arranged a sign bearing cylinder or drum t. These cylinders or drums are preferably of like dimensions, and each cylinder is provided with grooved guideways 5 to receive cards 6 or other removable sign matter. It is to be understood, however, that the surface of the cylinder may Specification of Letters Patent.

be fixed or otherwise formed and that such surface may have the advertising matter printed, painted or otherwise placed there on. This construction enables a series of signs to be applied to each cylinder, which are successively exposed in the rotation thereof, and of the cylinders being conveniently detached to change the signs whenever desired.
Arranged within the base of the cabinet is an electric or other suitable motor 7 which is in gear with a vertical shaft 8 carrying a gear member 9 which meshes with a gear rim 10 on one end of the cylinder applied to the lower shaft 3, whereby the lower cylinder is driven. The motor, when of the electric type, may be supplied with current in any preferred manner, and in practice a series of electric lamps 11 is provided within the casing upon the front wall thereof to illuminate the interior thereof. These lamps, however, may be mounted upon any other suitable portion of the apparatus. Each drum, as shown, is preferably of skeleton formation, and the signs thereon may be transparent or translucent, so that the light will shine therethrough.
In order to provide for the transmission of power from the lower cylinder or set of cylinders to each of the others, the cylinders are provided at their ends with friction bands 12 of rubber or other suitable material. Thcse friction bands of cylinders on adjacent shafts contact with each other, for the transmission of power from one to the other, and said friction bands also serve to space the cylinders definitely with relation to each other, so as to provide for the free clearance of the sign cards between adjacent cylinders, in the event of the projection of the same from any cause beyond the faces of the cylinders. Thus it will be seen that it is necessary with my construction to transmitpower directly to only one cylinder, the others being frictionally driven therefrom, whereby economy of construction and operation is insured. If desired, the top and bottom portions 13 and it at the front of the cabinet may consist of short fixed walls adapted to support stationary advertising matter and to conceal the spaces between the top and bottom walls of the cabinet and the top and bottom cylinders.
I claim 1. An advertising device comprising a casing, a series of sign bearing cylinders rotatably mounted therein, said cylinders being provided with friction bands for the transmission of power to each other, and means for communicating driving power to one of said cylinders.
2. An advertising device comprising a casing, a series of superposed horizontal transverse shafts therein, cylinders revolubly sup ported by the respective shafts, said cylinders being provided with friction bands for the transmission of power to each other, and means for transmitting motion to one of said cylinders.
3. An advertising device comprising a cas ing, a series of superposed horizontal transverse shafts arranged therein, drums or cylinders supported by said shafts and provided with friction bands for transmitting power to each other, motor driven means for operating one of said cylinders, and illuminating means upon said casing.
4. An advertising device comprising a casing having a transparent front, a series of skeleton drums arranged within said casing and provided with friction bands for the transmission of power to each other, means for communicating motion to one of the drums, transparent signs carried by the skeleton drums, and illuminating means upon the casing.
5. An advertising device comprising a cabinet having a front wall composed of fixed top and bottom sections and an intervening transparent section, illuminating means upon the casing, skeleton drums within the casing, transparent sign elements carried by the drums, friction bands upon the drums for transmitting motion from one to the other, and means for positively driving one of the drums.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
