'Our invention hasrelation to means for ballasting and'iilling the Abeds of railways, and consists in the novel construction and combiationof devices intended for transporting gravel' upon and dumping it'from the ordinary transportation cars called iin-ts'.

After beingr arranged upona-at, as above mentioned, the boxes are filled with gravel andthe cnrsmoved to the place of destination. 'lheoperator then turns the hand-wheels W, and the boxes are gradunlly moved outward until the pins c engage with the hooksf and the circular portionsof the ratchet-bars are passed over.the pinions. By this means the loads of the boxes are carefully and almost noiselesslydis# charged upon the rond-bed.' The box'es are then placed in their ('n'iginal positions 'and' are ready for other loads.

Weare aware that dumping-boxes have been attahed tocars, and we therefore do not4 claim, broadly, the invention of such attachment; but
