COIL-SUPPORTING POST FOR- ELEGTRICAL WATER-HEATERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1914.
Application filed February 9, 1914. Serial No. 817,489.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT A. Bowen, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coil Supporting Posts for Electrical Water-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention relates to an improved coil post for engagement with the contact terminal post of an electrical water heater, the object of which is to make a water seal joint between the water chamber and the switch chamber of the casing or housing of the electrical heating unit, so as to prevent short circuiting.
The invention resides in a part tubular post having an interior screw threaded socket for the screwing onto a contact post, the edge of the tubular section thereof being outwardly beveled to bite into the face of a soft metallic washer fitted onto the contact terminal post and seated within a packing seat within the inner face of the wall of the water chamber for the heater, so that when the supporting post for the coil is screwed home relative to the contact terminal post, it will firmly seat into the metallic washer and securely close the joint union between the two posts and by so doing prevent the leak of water from the water chamber into the switch chamber of the heating unit.
To comprehend the invention reference should be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the heating unit. Fig. 2 is a detail part broken view disclosing the terminal contact post, the seating washer and the coil supporting post in assembled position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged broken detail view of the coil supporting post.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to designate the water chamber of an electrical heating unit, and 2 the switch chamber thereof, in the latter of which the contact switches are positioned.
From the switch chamber and into the water chamber through the wall 3 the terminal contact posts 4 are extended, each of said posts being provided with a screw-threaded portion 5, onto which screws the coil supporting post 6. Each terminal contact post projects into a packing seat or socket formed in the inner face of the wall 7 of the water chamber 8 of the casing or housing 9, and onto such projecting end of said post is fitted a soft metallic washer 10.
As the coil supportingpost is screwed onto the threaded end of the terminal contact post, the lower beveled edge 11 thereof bears onto the face of the washer 10, gradu ally forcing the same firmly onto its seat and biting into the face thereof to make a non-leaky joint union between the terminal contact post and the coil supporting post.
The coil supporting post is formed with an interiorly screw-threaded socket 12, into which the screw-threaded section 5 of the contact terminal post tfits, the outer end of the said coil supporting post being preferably provided with a transverse slot to receive a screw-driver for screwing the post onto or off the terminal contact post.
It will be understood that the terminal contact posts connect with the contact switches within the switch chamber of the electrical union, also that the posts 6 when screwed home relative to the terminal contact post support the heating coils (not shown) situated within the water chamber 8.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and is desired to be protected by Letters Patent is In an electrical water heater, the combination with a suitable housing provided with a water heating chamber and a switch chamber, of a terminal contact post formed with a threaded section and extended from the switch chamber into the water chamber, a metallic washer fitted on the threaded portion of said posts extended within the water chamber, and a coil supporting post provided with an interiorly threaded portion for screwing onto the threaded section of the terminal contact post, the lower end of said supporting post being outwardly beveled for biting into the surface of the washer for the making of a water tight joint union between the mentioned posts.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
