GLOTILMARKING ATTACHMENT.

To all 107mm it may] concern t Be it known that I, RALEIGH E. IVI-IWF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Honaker, in the county of Russell, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloth-Marking Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in a mechanism which is adapted to print or mark the selvage edge of a bolt of cloth or other fabric, at selected intervals so that indication marks appear at predetermined intervals, and by means of which marks the length of a piece to be cut from the bolt may be readily ascertained, as well as the total length of material constituting the bolt after a piece has been cut therefrom.
As is well known, cloth is usually sold from a large piece which is in the form of a roll or bolt, the measuring being usually done with a yard stick or the like. This operation of .measuring` olf the size of the piece to be cut requires time, and as the bolt is eut piece by piece, it is often difficult to determine precisely the amount of material remaining in the bolt after several pieces have been removed therefrom. By the use of my invent-ion, however, I print upon the edge of the bolt at suitable intervals, for instance, a yard apart, indicating marks so that, not only may the length of the piece to be cut be readily ascertained, but the length of the cloth remaining in the bolt after a piece has been severed, will be readily ap parent by referring to the .last indicating mark on the goods in the bolt.
Still a further object of my invention is the provision of a machine of this character which will embody in its construction the desired features of simplicity and efficiency.
`With the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an end view showing the pawl and ratchet pinion for operating the machine. Fig. 4t is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken through the machine. Referring new to the accompanying drawings in detail, the numeral l indicates the base of the machine or device, and which base may be attached adjacent to or at the frame of clot-h treating machine, so that the cloth, as it comes from the latter may be stamped or marked with the measuring indications, as above recited. Mounted upon this base are standards 2 and 3, the former having a slot 4l .formed in its upper end.
The numeral 5 designates an operating shaft which is journaled at 6 in the standard 3 and extends at its opposite end through the slot 1t. The end portion of this shaft, extending beyond the standard 3, carries a conc-shaped ratchet pinion 7, which is fast with the shaft and is designed to be given a step by step movement or rotation through the means of the pawl arm 8 which is carried at the crank end 9 of the pawl shaft 10.-
This latter shaft is journaled in the lower portions of the standards 2 and $3, as shown at 11. The center portion of the pawl shaft 10 provided with an offset or crank p0rtion 12 to which is attached the end 13 of the crank bar 14. This bar extends through the slot 15 in the table 1G and is formed at its upper end with a transverse slot 17 through which passes the shaft 5. The end 1S of the shaft, which is opposite the crank end thereof, is journalcd in the vertical side wall Il() of the frame of my attachment, and carried by said shaft at a. point between said wall 19, adjacent the end 1S thereof is a power wheel 9.0, which is driven by a belt Q1 from a suitable source of power.
Carried by the end portion 22 of the shaft 5 is a marking wheel or disk 23, the pe riphery of which is provided with a series of type or other numbering or marking elements 2.7 which numbers `or marks are arranged consecutively. The edge of the cloth or other fabric to be marked is passed on the section Zei of the table 16, and directly beneath the marking wheel 23.
In the installation of my invention, the machine is located between the loom and the folder, so that the table portion 24 forms an intermediate platform between the loom and the folclor'. As the loom and the folder are well known mechanisms, and have nothing to do with the present invention, they need not be illustrated here. Having arranged the table section 24 between such loom and folder, it will be noted that as the cloth is drawn bythe folder from the loom, it passes over the table portion 24: beneath the marking wheel and is stamped or marked by such wheel as follows ln operation, as the crank shaft 10 is rotated through the rotation of the power wheel 20, the pawl arm 8, which is connected to the crank end 9 of the shaft 10, is given a vertical reciprocating movement so that it engages with the teeth of the ratchet pinion and imparts a step by step rotation to such pinion. Consequently the shaft 5 is also given a step by step rotation and the marking wheel 23 is turned so that it brings the numbers one at a time in contact or niarking relation-to the fabric or cloth. At the same time, as the shaft 10 is rotated., as described, the offset or central crank portion 12 thereof imparts a vertical reciprocating motion to the crank bar 14, and as the latter is loosely connected with the shaft 5, it-lifts the end portion 22 of the shaft at predetermined times, this being permitted by the slot 4 in the standard 2, so that the wheel Will be elevated from and lowered into contact with the cloth upon the outer section 2&1 at every complete rotation of the shaft. It Vwill thus be seen that the instant one character is printed or marked upon the cloth, the continued rotation of the shaft 10 through the bar 14 lifts the marking wheel or disk from the cloth and. the pawl arm giving the ratchet pinion a step by step movement rotates the shaft so that the next number in sequence on the marking shaft is brought into marking position ready for the next marking. rlhus by properly adjusting and relating the 'parts the printing wheel may be made to mark the selvage edge of the goods at predetermined intervals, such as one yard, `five yards and the like. The consequence is that the whole bolt or piece of goods may be so marked. Thus if a piece of goods contains fifty yards of cloth and is to be marked at yard intervals, the marking numbers of the type 'wheel would run from 1 to 50.

It will be noted that I have provided an exceedingly simple, yet eflicient device which may be readily employed in connection with the cloth weaving or treating machine at the factory, so that the piece of goods to be made into the bolt may be marked permanently on the selvage edge, so that when the goods is sold by the piece from the bolt, the length of the piece to be cut, as well as the length of the goods remaining in the bolt after such piece has been cut, may kbe readily ascertained. i
Whilel have yherein shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention, I wish it to be understood that I do not confine myself to all the `precise details of construction herein set forth by way of illustration, as modification and variation may bc made without departing from the spirit 0fv the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.

1. The combination with a frame, of a pair of standards, one having a slot therein, a shaft carried by the standards and movable in the slot, a marking device carried by the shaft, a crank shaft arranged below the first mentioned shaft, a crank bar carried by the crank shaft and engagingthe-irst mentioned shaft, a crank arm at one end ofV mounted in the supports and capable ofV vertical movement in the slot, a marking device mounted on the shaft adjacent the slotted support, a crank shaft journaled in the frame and having a central crank p0rt-ion, a crank bar extending between the central crank portion and the first mentioned shaft and adapted upon the rotation of the crank shaft to raise and lowerV the first mentioned shaft, means for rotating the crank shaft, a ratchet pinion mounted on the first mentioned shaft and a pawl arm mounted on the adjacent offset end of the crank shaft and adapted to actuate the ratchet pinion to impart step by step movement to thefirst` mentioned shaft.
