COUNTING DEVICE FOR WEB-SHEET-CUTTING MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. MoAnAMs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Counting Devices for WebSheet-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention comprises a counting de: vice for web sheet cutting machines which will periodically cut a longer sheet from the web so as to separate the sheets when delivered in a pile into divisions containing a predetermined number of sheets; means being provided for adjusting the frequency of the cut-off longer sheet to separate divisions of greater or lesser numbers of sheets.
My invention also includes means for obtaining the above object by periodically increasing the effective diameter of one of the Web feeding rolls, it being understood that the sheet cutters work at regular intervals.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings in which,

The web roll is denoted by land it is suitably supported from the machine frame 2, in the usual manner. The web is shown as led from the roll 1, around the roll 3 and between the web feed rolls t and 5. The web] is led from these feed rolls over the guides 6, through the pair of coacting rotary cutters 7, 8, and over the guides 9 to the endless delivery carriers 10, 11.
The shaft 12 of the web feed roll 4 is shown'as driven from a suitable source of power, not shown, through the belt 13 and pulley 14:. The shaft 15 of the rotary cutter 8 is shown as driven from the shaft 12, through the gears 16, 17, 18. The shaft 19 of the rotary cutter 7 is shown as driven from the shaft 15 of the rotary cutter 8, through the gears 20, 21.
The web spacing member 22 partly surrounds the web feed roll 41, and is rotatably mounted on the shaft 12 by arms 23, beyond the ends of the roll 4. This member 22 is of curved, double tapered form so as to extend circumferentially part way around the roll in close proximity thereto, leaving thin edges for facilitating its entrance between the web and the roll, and its exit therefrom when in operation. This member is gravity controlled and is held in its inoperative position out of engagement with the web by stops 24: projecting from its supporting arms 23, which stops are engaged'by arms 25 fixed to a controlling bar 26 which is shiftab-le lengthwise laterally of the machine. A spring 27 serves to hold the bar 26 at the limit of its movement in the direction which will keep the arms 25 in engagement with the stops 24. Pins 28 projecting inwardly from the sides of the machine frame, form supports for the arms 25.
A counting wheel 29 is loosely mounted on a stud shaft 30, in position to oscillate a predetermined. portion of a revolution as will hereinafter more fully appear. This counting wheel is provided on its periphery with ratchet teeth 31 arranged to be engaged by one pawl 32, for moving the counting wheel in one direction and by another pawl 33 for niovim the eoijinting wheel in the opposite direction; fllhese two paws are mounted on one arm 3% of a rock lever loosely mounted on the stud shaft 30, the other arm 35 of which lever is connected by a link 36 to a rock arm 37 hinged at 38 on the machine frame. This arm 37 is oscillated through an eccentric 39 on the shaft 15 of the rotary cutter 8. The double pawl 32, 33, has an integral uprising arm 40, and a depending arm ll has a lost motion connection with the double pawl.
he operation. of the bar 26 by the movement of the counting wheel, is obtained by the following means. The end of the bar 26, adjacent to the counting wheel, is provided with a dog 42 mounted to yield in one direction against the tension of a spring 43 and held against yielding in the other direction by a stop 44, which dog has a cam face 45 arranged to be engaged by the cam face 1-6 of a cam block 4:7 fixedly secured to the inner face of the counting wheel 29. When the counting wheel is rotated in the direction of the arrow shown on the counting wheel in Fig. 4c, the cam block 47 will pass by the dog 42 without shifting the controlling bar 26. lVhen the counting wheel moves in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 10, the cam block will, through its engagement with the dog 42, shift the bar 26 sufficiently to move the arms 25 out of the path of the stops 2% carried by the web spacing member 22 and thus permit the member to drop by gravity into position to be engaged by the traveling web and carried by the web around with the web feed roll l, thus increasing the effective diameter of the roll until the member passes out from between the web and roll, it being understood that the shaft 48 of the upper web feed roll 5, is mounted in yielding bearings to permit the member 22 to pass between the two rolls.
The means for adjusting the periodical operation of the controlling bar 26 and thereby the web spacing member 22, is constructed, arranged. and operated as follows:
A fixed pin 49 projects through the outer face of the counting wheel 29 in position to engage the depending arm 41 of the double pawl to move the pawl 33 out of engagement with the counting wheel. An adjustable pin 50 for also engaging the arm ll of the double pawl to move the pawl 32 out of engagement with the counting wheel, is provided, which pin 50 is car 'ied by an arm 51 which is pivoted on the shaft 30 of the counting wheel and may be secured in any desired position around the counting wheel by means of a locking pin 52 which may engage any one of series of holes 53 in the'arm 51 and any one of an annular series of holes 5a around the counting'wheel 29. For instance, the holes 53 in the arm 51 may represent tons and the holes 54 in the counting wheel may represent hundreds in the counting off of the sheets, it being understood that they may represent any suitable combination.
To prevent the overthrowing of the count ing wheel under the impulse of either the pawl 32 or the pawl 33, peripheral bralres 55 may be provided around the counting wheel. The uprising arm 4L0 of the double pawl is thrown to one side or the other of a yielding double cam 56 carried by an upward extension 57 of the arm 3% which supports the double pawl.
In operation, presupposing every one hundred and fifty sheets, for instance, are to be indicated by a longer sheet, the arm 51 which carries the adjustable pin 50, is swung around the wheel a suflicient distance from the fixed pin 49 so that as the counting wheel is moved step by step by the pawl 32, the pin 50 will be in time brought around into engagement with the depending arm 4:1 when half of the one hundred and fifty sheets have been counted off. The engagement of the pin 50 with the arm L1 *ill swing the pawl 32 out of its operative position and the pawl 33 into its operative position and the counting wheel will then immediately begin to be moved in the re verse direction until the relatively fixed pin elf) will engage the depending arm ll and again bring the pawl into its operative position and the pawl 33 out of its operative position. In the meantii'ne as the pin 49 engages the arm 41, the cam block at? on the inner face of the counting wheel, will have been moved into position to cause its cam face 46 to engage the cam face -15 of the dog 42 carried by the bar 26, shifting this bar 26 laterally of the machine, sufficiently to move its arms 25 out from under the stops 24 of the gravity controlled web spacing member 22. This will permit the member 22 to drop into engagement with the web and will thus, because of the increased effective diameter of the roll 4:, cause a greater length of web to pass between the cutters and 8, during one revolution of the cutters, thereby causing the cutters to cut a longer length of sheet, which sheet can be readily detected in the pile of sheets. As the member 22 completes its revolution, the stops 2st will again come into position to rest upon the arms 25 of the shifting bar 26, the cam face 46 h ving in the meantime passed by the cam face 4-5,
permitting the bar 26 to shift back to its normal )osition under the influence of the spring 2 As the counting wheel reverses its movement, it will be seen that the do, 2 will yield to permit the cam block to pass by the dog without again shifting the bar 26,
It will be seen that by shifting the arm 51 to different positions, the longer length sheet may be out off at different times so as to mark different numbers of sheets in each division of the pile.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the construction herein set forth, but,
What I claim is:
1. Means for cutting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling web and means for periodically causing loniger sheets to be cut from the web between the cutting of the sheets of the same length.
2. Means for cuttting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling web and for periodically cutting longer sheets and means for adjusting the frequency of the cutting of longer sheets.
3. Means for cutting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling web and for periodically cutting longer sheets including a web feed roll and means for increasing its effective diameter at predetermined intervals to cause it to feed a longer length of web through the cutters.
4-. Means for cutting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling web and for periodically cutting longer sheets including a web feed roll and a web spacing member mounted to pass around the web feed roll at predetermined intervals to increase its effective diameter.
5. Means for cutting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling web and for periodically cutting longer sheets including a web feed roll and a web spacing member mounted to pass around the web feed roll at predetermined intervals to increase its effective diameter and means for controlling the frequency of operation of the web spacing member.
6. Means for cutting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling web and for periodically cutting longer sheets including a web feed roll and a web spacing member mounted to pass around the web feed roll at predetermined intervals to increase its effective diameter, and a counting device for controlling the frequency of oper ation of the web spacing member.
7 Means for cutting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling Web and for periodically cutting longer sheets including a web feed roll and a gravity operated web spacing member mounted 'topass around the roll between the web and roll when released, and means for releasing the said web spacing member.
8. Means for cutting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling web and for periodically cutting longer sheets including a web feed roll and a gravity operated web spacing member mounted to pass around the roll between the web and roll when released and means for releasing the said web spacing member comprising a member controlling bar and a rotary counting wheel for operating said bar.
9. Means for cutting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling web and for periodically cutting longer sheets including a web feed roll and a gravity operated web spacing member mounted to pass around the roll between the web and roll when released and means for releasing the said web spacing member comprising a member controlling bar and an oscillating counting wheel for operating said bar.
10. Means for cutting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling web and for periodically cutting longer sheets including a web feed roll and a gravity operated web spacing member mounted to pass around the roll between the web and roll when released and means for releasing the said web spacing member comprising a member controlling bar and a rotary counting wheel for operating said bar and means for controlling the amount of movement of the counting wheel.
11. Means for cutting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling web and for periodically cutting longer sheets including a web feed roll and a gravity operated web spacing member mounted to pass around the roll between the web and roll when released and means for releasing the said web spacing member comprising a member controlling bar and an oscillating counting wheel for operating said bar, and means for controlling the forward and backward movements of the counting wheel.
12. Means for cutting series of sheets of the same length from a traveling web and periodically cutting longer sheets including a web feed roll, a gravity operated web spacing member mounted to pass around the roll between the web and roll, when released, and means for controlling the frequency of operation of the web spacing member comprising a counting wheel, a double pawl for oscillating the wheel and means carried by the wheel for throwing the pawls into and out of their operative positions.
