PROTECTIVE SHIELD FOR GUNS.
incense.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1914.
Application filed October 16, 1913. Serial No. 795,557.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, KAnL'VoLLnR, a subj ect of the German Emperor, residing at 12 Scharnhorststrasse, Dusseldorf, Germany, and EMIL MtiLLnn, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 27 Fordanstrasse, Dusseldorf, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Shields for Guns; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Protective shields for guns are known in which the opening for the gun-barrel is covered by a sliding plate. This is automatically shifted when the gun barrel is moved. This construction has the disadvantage that the plate is no longer capable of moving in its guides when it is damaged by shot or shell. Moreover the plate can only be adapted to slide if it is of straight or circular section. By the invention, the plate is hinged to the protective shield so as to cover the opening for the gun barrel and is connected by means of links with a piece which shares the movement of the gun. The use of this hinged plate allows of the protecting shield havin any desiredform.
In the accompanying drawings are shown several constructions in accordance with the invention.
Figure 1 is a cross sectional view of one form of shield in which the plate covering the opening for the gun barrel lies in front of the shield. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of this form, the gun barrel and its cradle being in section. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of a form in which the plate is behind the shield. Fig. 4t is a cross sectional view of a form in which the arrangement is such that the links which transmit the movement do not come into action until a certain angle of elevation has been attained.
In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the shield 03 is connectedwith the gun carriage in the known manner and for permitting elevation of the gun barrel there is an opening I) inthe shield. For covering this opening aplate d is hinged to the shield at 0 and is connected by'links c with a part of the gun which shares the elevating move ment, in this instance with the cradle f, the connection being by means of universal joints 9 both on the plate and on the cradle, so that the gun barrel may be moved laterally in respect to the stationary shield. When the gun is elevated, the links 6 raise the plate (Z, as shown in dotted lines in Fig.
1. Thus the plate moves out of the way of the upwardly swinging gun barrel and permits the latter to move in the opening 6.
v In Fig. 3 the plate cl is hinged to the back. i of the shoulder and moves rearwardly when the gun is elevated so as to be out of the way of the latter. Such a position of'the plate is shown in dotted lines. a
In Fig; 4 the construction is like that of Figs. 1 and 2, in that the plate (Z is hinged to the front face of the shield. In this form the links 6 consist of two parts 6, 6 one sliding within the other, a spring it being interposed between the parts. This spring abuts at one end on a piston 2' fixed to the end of rod 6 and at its'other end against the plug is which closes the hollow part 6 When the gun barrel is horizontal the parts of the link have the positionshown in full lines in Fig. &, the spring 72. being compressed. l Vhen the barrel is elevated, for example into the position shown in dotted lines, the hollow part c of the link is pushed upward over the rod 6 without carrying the latter with it. The first portion of the elevating movement of the gun barrel does not produce any movement of the hinged plate, there being a relative movement between the rod 6 and part 6 As soon as the latter has reached the limit of its travel over the rod 6 and the piston 2' contacts wit-h the lower end .ofrpart 6 the two parts, upon a continued movement of the gun, will travel in unison and thereby move the plate d out of the way. WVhen the gun barrel is returned to the hori- .zontal position the part'e of the link returns with it, together with the rod 6 and the hinged plate, until the latter rests upon the shield a, and thereafter the'spring is compressed as the return movement is completed.
l/Ve claim as our invention 1. A gun shield having an opening, a hinged plate for extending over said opening, in combination with a gun, and means connected to said plate and to said gun for automatically operating said plate in the raising and lowering of the gun.
2. A gun shield having an opening, a
plate hinged to said shield and designed to extend over said opening, in combination with a gun, and links flexibly connected to the plate and also to the gun to partake of the raising and lowering movements of the latter. 7
3. A gun shield having an opening, and a hinged plate designed to extend over said opening, in combination with a gun designed to extend through said opening, and links connecting said plate to the gun to partake of the raising and lowering movements thereof, said links having yieldingly connected portions whereby the plate will not be operated by the links until a certain angle of elevation of the gun has been at tained.
4. A gun shield having an opening, and a KARL VOLLER. EMIL MULLER.
