UNITE STATES 'ATEN'I OFFICE.
FRANK G. KOEHLER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HAND-TRUCK.
noaaeeo.
Be it known that I, FRANK G. Koni-nina, a citizen ot' the United States ot America, and a resident of the city ot St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in I-Iand-Trucls,` ot' which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanyingl drawings, forming part ot' this specification.
My invention relates to hand trucks of' the type illustrated by Letters Patents issued to me January 9, 1912, and July 22%, 1912, numbered respectively, 1,014,400 and 1,0353,- 421. Hand trucks of this type include metal :trames and wooden handles attached to the frames, and the practice in making; such trucks has included attaching the handles to the truck frames by bolts extendingv through the handles and the frames. A, serious objection to this practice is found in the vfact that the production oit' the bolt holes through the wooden handles weakens the latter very materially so that the handles will not withstand the strains imposed thereon. Furthermore, when the wooden handles as heretofore made were broken it was necessary to replace them with new wooden handles similar to those previously in use, and much trouble has been encountered in the renewal owing to dilliculties in obtaining proper registration ot the bolt holes in the handles and the bolt holes in the truck fra-Ine owing to ditlerenee o't shrinkage of Wood used for the production of the handles.
My present invention has for its object to provide a simple and efficient construction whereby wooden handles may be applied to the metal frames of hand trucks without the extension of bolts through the handles to connect them to the truck trames, whereby the troubles mentioned are obviated.
Figure I is a perspective View ot part of the frame of the truck and a handle secured thereto in accordance with my present invention. Fig. II is an inverted plan view of one of the handles. Fig. III is an en- Specification of Letters Patent.

the handle fitted to this portion, it being understood that the frame is of similar structure at its opposite side and a handle similar to that shown is utilized at that side.
l designates the metal side bar ot' the truck frame and 2 is the rear cross bar secured to said har and also to the opposite l.side bar. The cross bar 2 is of angle shape in cross section, comprising' a horizontal flange, and a vertical flange extending dowi'iwardly at the Front of the horiz/.ontal flange. The vertical flange of the cross bar is of such length as to fit between the side bars of the truck iframe and it is provided at its ends with forwardly extending strap members 3 which are secured by rivets` or other suitable means to said side bars. The horizontal tlanee olf the cross bar '2 has straps extensions -l which extend over the side bars l, then downwardly along the outer faces o't` the side bars. and then in wardly to -lorm arms 5 which lie beneath the YFrame side bars and parallel with the horizontal flange of the cross bar. The extensions ot the cross bar are secured to the :traine side, bars by suitable means, such as rivets 4l that extend tln'ough the vertical portions of said extensions and through the side bars l of the truck iframe.
G designates one of a pair oit U-shaped clips, the base members oil which are fitted to the outside faces oit the truck side bars l, to which they are secured by rivets (3 or other suitable means. and the spaced hoi-i zontal arms of which straddle and extend inwardly from said side bars.
T designates one ol the Vwooden handles` secured to the side bars of the truck traine by arranging' it in the clin (3 and between the horizontal flange oit the cross bar 2 and the arm 5 beneath said horizontal flange, .suitable means to be hereinafter described being` furnished to hold the handle between said members. This handle abuts at its 'forward end against the rear tace et the vertical llange of the truck trame cross bar 2, and is provided at its bottom adjacent its 'Forward end with a. stop device which serves to prevent rearward movement ot' the handle b v engagement with the lower arm 5 ,arried by the cross bar 2. The device shown in the drawings for this purpose comprises a plate 8 secured by a screw 9, (see Fig. II), or other suitable means, to the handle, the plate being provided at its forward end with a down-turned lip l0, which engages the forward edgeof the cross bar arm 5. y
ll and 12 are bolts that extend, respectively, vertically through the horizontal flange and arm 5 of the cross bar 2, and through the arms of the clip 6. These bolts serve to draw the members they are arranged in toward each other, whereby the handle is securely clamped between said.
members and, the bolts being arranged in said parts, parallel with the truck frame side bar l and in close proximity to the side of the handle opposite that presented against the truck side frame bar, serve to hold the handle against said frame bar. To provide for the handle being more securely held within the clin 6, one or both of the arms of said clip may be provided with a spur G formed by upsetting the metal of the clip, as illustrated most clearly in Fig. lV.
I claim:
l. A hand truck, comprising a side frame member, bar secured to and extending` transversely relative to said side frame member, a clip carried by said side frame member, and a handle secured in said clip and abutting against said bar; said handle being provided with means in engagement with said bar whereby rearward movement of the handle is prevented.
2. A hand truck, comprising a side frame member, a bar secured to said side frame member and extending transversely relative thereto, the said bar including top and bottom members parallel with each other and a vertical flange, a clip carried by said side frame member located back of said transverse bar, and a handle arranged in said clip and between the tcp and bottom members of said transverse bar, the said handle abutting at its forward Iend against the vertical flange ofk said transverse bar, and being provided with means for engagement with said transverse bar whereby rearward movement of the handle is prevented.
3. A hand truck, comprising a side frame member, a bar secured to said side frame member and extending transversely relative thereto, the said bar including top and bottom members parallel vwith each other, a U-v shaped clip carri-ed by said side frame member located back of said transverse bar, and a handle arranged in said clip and between YVthe top and bottom membersrof said transverse bar, the said handle abutting` at its forward end against said transverse bar and being provided with means for engagement with said transverse bar whereby rearward movement of the handle is preveiited.
1l. A hand truck, comprisinga side iframe member, a transverse bar secured to said side frame member, the said transverse -bar comprising a horizontal top yflange and a member, a. transverse bar secured to saidk side frame member, 'the said transverse 'bar comprising a horizontal top flange anda vertical flange extending downwardly from the forward edge yof the top flange, the said transverse bar being provided with a strap extension secured to said side frame member and terminating in a horizontal flange beneath the horizontal flange of said bar, a clip carried by said side Vframe member located back of said transverse bar, a handle, a vbolt extending through the horizontal flange and horizontal arm of said transverse bar adjacent to the side of said handle -opposite that facing said side frame member, and a bolt extending through the arms of said clip adjacent to the side of said handle opposite to that facing the side frame fmeniber.
