To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANNES T11. FEDER- sEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Flushing, borough of Queens, city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Sight-F eed Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present invent-ion relates to a lubrr eating apparatus, and more particularly to devices by which the lubricant may be observed as the same is fed to the parts to be lubricated, and while adapted for use in any lubricating apparatus where it is desired to see the feed, the device of my present invention is particularly adapted for motor` vehicles and other similar uses where the apparatus is subject to a greater or less amount of vibration.
I-leretofore various sight-feed devices have been employed, and in some of which provision has been made for regulating the feed, but so far as I am aware difficulty has been experienced with this type of sight-feed devices when employed Where there is any appreciable amount of vibration because of the tendency of the vibration is to change or vary the position of the feed regulating means. Other of these sight-feed devices are very liable to leak around the glass parts, and the object of my present invention is to overcome these difficulties.
In carrying out my present invention with this object in view, I preferably employ a receptacle with a cover therefor, a delivery cock within the receptacle, a device by which the flow from the delivery cock is regulatable and means for holding said device in position, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In the drawing Figure 1 'is a front elevation of my improved sight-feed device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line a", m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the regulating or adjusting screw. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan of the feed pipe connection at line rel, w1. Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a plan of the same, Fig. G is a front elevation of a modified form of feed pipe connection and F ig. 7 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is an elevation of a modified form of the adjusting or regulating screw, and Fig. 9 is a plan view of the spring for the adjusting screws.
Similar letters and numerals of reference indicate similar parts.
Referring to the drawing, 10 designates the casing, which, as illustrated, is preferably rectangular in front elevation, although I do not limit myself to this conguration of the casing. The casing comprises a back member 11, the top member 12, the bottom member 13, which is preferably inclined, sides 14 and 15 and a front member 1o, which is also preferably inclined and provided with a circular opening, the flange forming which is adapted to receive a cover 17 fitted with a glass or other transparent body 18 through which the interior of the casing may be seen. The back member ot.' the casing is preferably provided with a lug 19 by means of which, and a clasp screw 20, the casing may be located and secured in position to the dashboard of an automobile or other support.
I'Vithin the casing I preferably employ a tubular T-shaped body 21., a limb or member 22 of which is exteriorly scrcw-tln-eadcd, adapted to pass through an opening provided therefor in the back of the casing, and to be secured in this position by means of a nut Q3, turned down on the member 2Q or otherwise. Fig. 2 also shows this screwthreaded member 22 as also adapted to receive a coupling nipple 24k by means of which a feed or supply pipe 25 is connected thereto.
Secured to and preferably depending from the cross-arm of the T body there are two delivery cocks 2G and 27, and within the casing I preferably employ a partition :'28 dividing the same into two compartments, as shown at a, respectively, the delivery cock 26 extending into the compartment ci and the delivery cock 27 extendinc` into the compartment o. Each delivery coc t interiorly in a position immediately below the, level of the bore of the cross-arm of the Tbody is provided with a tapering seat 29.
As shown in connection with ligs. 1, Q and 3, I prefer to employ an adjusting screw 30 at the end of the shank 31, of which is a tapering valve 32; the sc1'ewthrea(.led portion of the shank 31 being adapted to engage the screw threads within the bore of the delivery cock in which the adjusting screw is inserted, so that the adjusting screw may be turned down, causing the tapering lvalve 32 to scat against the valve seat` Q9, it being understood that each delivery cock is provided with one of these adjusting screws having a tapering valve at thc end thereof. The shank S1 of cach adjusting screw is also provided with a circumferential recess 33, and in the form of indicating device illustrated, a spring 34, made of sheet metal or other similar material, is secured centrally in position to the top member of the casing and between the pair of adjusting screws, and at its extremities this spring 34Cv is bifurcated, providing recesses 3G which are adapted to receive the circumferential recessed portions of the adjusting screws and to frictionally engage the adjacent portions of the said adjusting screws. Tt will be apparent that by the employment of this spring 34, that when turned to the desired position any adjusting screw will be there frictionally maintained against accidental displacement due to the vibration of the apparatus, vehicle or other support of the device. rflue lower portion of the casing is provided with perforated lugs 37 to which outlet connections 5S may be secured, the outlet connections, of course, leading to the parts of the apparatus to be lubricated.
Referring to the form of my invention shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8, it will be seen that the delivery cocks 39 and l0 may depend directly beneath the cross member of the tubular nlshaped body, and that instead of employing adjusting screws which extend through the casing and are operated exteriorly, l may employ adjusting screws d1, all of which lie entirely within the casing, the position of which is adjusted by the insertion of a screw-driver within the casing upon the removal of the cover 17 or in some other desired manner.
l claim as my invention:
1. A sight feed device comprising` a cas ing, a cover therefor in part transparent and through which the interior of the casing may be observed for substantially the entire width thereof, delivery cocks within the casing, a common intake extending through a wall of the casing and to which the said cocks are connected, a partition extending upwardly from the bottom of the casing to a point appreciably above the orifices of the said delivery cocks so as to divide the interior of the casing into separate compartments for the lubricant from each of the said delivery cocks, and separate devices for delivering the lubricant from each of the said compartments.
A sight feed device comprising a casing the bottom of which is inclined, a cover for the casing which in part is transparent and through which the interior of the casing may b-e observed for substantially the entire width thereof, a common inlet for a lubricant, branch-es extending from the inlet transversely of the casing and interiorly thereof, delivery cocks connected in the said branches, a partition extending from the bottom of the casing to a point a substantial distance above the orifices of the said delivery cocks and between the same, thereby dividing the casing interiorly into separate compartments, and separate devices for delivering the lubricant from each of the said compartments.
8. A sight feed device comprising a casing the bottom of which is inclined, a cover for the casing which in part is transparent and through which the interior of the casing may be observed for substantially the entire width thereof, a common inlet for a lubricant, branches extending from the inlet transversely of the casing and interiorly thereof, delivery cocks connected in .the said branches, a partition extending from the bottom of the casing to a point a substantial distance above the orifices of the said delivery cocks and between the same thereby dividing the casing interiorly into separate compartments, a device for regulating the feed through each delivery cock, means for maintaining each delivery cock in position against accidental displacement, and separate devices for delivering the Vlubricant from each of the said compartments.
l. A sight feed device comprising a casing the bottom of which is inclined, a cover for the casing which in part is transparent and through which the interior of the casing may be observed for substantially the entire width thereof, a common inlet for a lubricant, branches extending from the inlet transversely of the casing and interiorly thereof, delivery cocks connected in the said branches, a partition extending from the bottom of the casing to a point a substantial distance above the orifices of the said delivery cocks and between the same thereby dividing the casing interiorly into separate compartments, spring holding devices for maintaining each delivery cock in position against accidental displacement, and separate devices for delivering the lubricant from each of the said compartments.
5. A sight-feed device, comprising a casing, a feed pipe extending into the same, a delivery cock, an adjusting screw the shank of which is provided with a circumferential recess and which shank terminates in a tapering valve, and a spring secured to the casing and having a recessed end adapted to receive the circumferential recessed portion of the shank of the adjusting screw, the frictional engagement between which parts maintains the adjusting screw in position against accidental displacement.
