OLIVER CARPENTER MEIGS, or DUBUQUafIoWA.
Letters Patent No. 109,643, dated November 29, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT lNfGAUGES 'R GANG-SAWS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'll-hom 'it Imay concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER CARPENTER Mures', et Dubuque, in the county of'Dubuque and State of Iowa, have-invented a newamlusetnl Improvement iu Gang-Saws and l'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, aml -exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawing l'orming part nl' this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a iront viewot' my improved gang-saw.

Figure 3 a horizontal section of the same.

My invention relates to gang-saws, and consists in is a side view, partly in section, ot' the improvements thereon7 namely, in the peculiar' construction ot' the notched gauge-bars so that tho main. central portion shall be ot' iron and the'side plates of hard steel', to prevent wear.
A, in the drawing, represents the ii'ame in which the saws are to be secured. l
The upper part ot this trame is made slotted, to receive the shauks a ot' the upper coupling-plates 15.
The lower part ofthe frame A has a projecting rih or tlange, b, over which hooks, c, on the. lower coupling-plates C, are made to catch l). D are the saws.
lhey have at their ends` projecting ribs, ll d, which being ou both sides, as shoumconstitute heads for holding the saws in place. p
The ribs d are riveted or otherwise fastened to the saw-blades.
The couilinf-ilates B (J are both U'rooved and C1 C slottedv in the nmnner shown, t'or the purpose ot' receiving the ends oi' the saw-blades, with the heads ot` the. same. f
The upper couplings have projecting shanks, a, that project through the upper part of the frame, and receive wedges, c c,- to hold them in place. The lower couplings have hooks, c c, pivoted to ythem, which catch over the rib b 011 the lower :part of t ie frame.
From the trame project, forward and backward, slotted arms, 1') it), which serve to hold the front gauges l andthe rear gauges G., These gauges are transverse bars, notched-to fit the couplings and -hoid them the requisite distance apart. They are formed ot' a central piece of iron, to which is riveted, on each side, a plate ol' steel, to prevent the wear of' lateral friction.
By moans ol'jam-nuts ff the gauges are locked to the arms E.
The two front gauges F F are far enough apart from each other to entirely bclear the saw-blades. The rear gauges G- G, however, are closer together, as shown in iig. 2, so that the saws are supported by them in rear. Thus, during the process of sawing, the gauges G serve to supportthc saws, preventing the same from rocking backward.
When a saw is to be removed itean at once be iit'ted out oi' the couplings that hold it, the front gauges not beingin the way, to prevent suoli removal. y
B v means ofthe wedges, or their equivalents, the saws can at all times be properly strained.
1)', in the drawing, represents a saw secured in the ordinary manuel'.
Itis, by means of pins g, fitted to the upper and riveted tothe lower fastening, and isat both ends clearly in the way ot' the trout gauges, so that it can only be removed by tirst taking away the said gauges. y
I Iaving thus described my invention,
l claim as new and desire to secure Patent- 'lhe gauges, formed of a central and main piece ot' iron, combined with a steel plate on each side, to prevent-lateral friction, as set forth.
