FRANK 1i. MARTIN, or'BAr'rLn CREEK, MICHIGABLIASSIGNOR 'ro POSTUM enREAL'co,
LIMITED,- OFB ATTLE CREEK, OF MICHIGAN. r v
To all whom it may honcern: v
Be it known that I, FRANK B.-MA TI'N, of Battle Creek, Michigan, have invented a.
new and useful Improvement in Cartons Feeding Devices, which invention isfully set forth in the following specification.-
-The present invention relates to carton: feedin and shifting machines, and is particularly an improvement in the means for' shifting cartons from one supporting'snrface to another.
For the purpose of illustration, the 1n vention is herein shown for shifting cartons from the feed conveyers or belts to. the main carrier or-convey'er which advances the car-.
tons to the sealing mechanism. v
Heretoforc, in practice, the cartons have been shifted from one or more feed belts to the main carrier by reciprocating means, with 'the result that "cartons were shifted onto the main conveyer only when the reci 7 rocating means were moving toward t e main conveyer, there being no feed of the cartons onto the main conveyor when said reciprocating means moved back to their original position. Such a construction, be-
sides being complicated, is comparatively slow in operation, and the object 0 the. present invention is to provide a simple and economical construction whereby the carions are more rapidly fed from one or more feed belts onto the main conveyor, said invention involving the use of a rotating member which engages the cartons and shifts them laterally. -A single shifting device may be employed, but, for the purpose of illustration, duplicate connected shifting devices are shown as applied to a machine provided with two feedbelts, one shifting device being associated with each belt.
The invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan view showing the improved device in duplicate"associated with two feed belts and a main conveyor; l igs. 2
and 3 are detail plan views showing different positions of the carton as it is laterally shifted; Fig. 4 is a transverse verticalsec tion on the line A1\ of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of duplicate connected shifting mear a Referring to the dranungs, 6- are suitably mounted and driven feed belts which carry the filled cartons, and 77 are tracks A CARTON-FEEDING DEVICE.

77 are followers 88, which are carried byv any suitable conveying tons and progress them in two streams to I On. eachside of the "machine, there is mounted in a bracket 10, secured on the frame .11 of the machine, a vertical shaft 12.
upper end, said shaft is provided At its with abeveled' gear 16 which meshes witha beveled gear 17 mounted on a shaft 18, which shaft is suitably supported at its ends in bearings on brackets 19 secured to the frame of the machine. Said-shaft 18.is provided witha second beveled gear QO-identical with vgear 17, and meshing" with a beveled Y means, as endless" chain 9. These followers engage the carth'e gluing and gear 21 identical with gear 16. It will. there- 'fore be appreciated that when power is applied, shafts 12 will rotate in opposite di- Shafts 12 are driven by any suit.- ahle means, but, preferably, one end of shaft 18 is extended-beyond bracket 19 and a gear wheel 15 is mounted thereon, a driving chain 14 passingaround said wheel.
Each
rality o. a s 22, which rotate over its associated t lt 6. A stationary stop 23, adjustable in bracket 24 (Figs. 1 and 5), snitably secured to the frame of the machine, is associated with each shaft 12, and, as here shown, said stop is provided with two arms 25 and 26, the ends of which are bent at right angles to project over the adjacent feed belt 6; and the arms 22 rotate between said arms 25 and 2G. The rotation of shafts 12 is timed with the movement of conveyer 9, so that the followers 8 will be in proper position to engage the cartons as they are lat erally shifted from belts 6 onto tracks or ways 7.- I v The operation of the device is as follows: The cartons are conveyed by belts 6 until said cartons in each stream successively en gage the arms of steps 23 (Fig. 3), at which time one of the rotary arms 22 engages the carton and shifts it laterally from the belt (3 onto the track or way 7, along which it is progressed by reason of the engagement of follower 8 carried by conveyor 9. The operation of the device is identical on both sides of the machine.
The invention is as applicable to a single machine provided with only-one feed belt as to a double machine, such as herein illustrated.
By the use of the construction above described, the sealing capacity of the machine is nearly double that attained by the use of the reciprocating shifting means.
lVhat is claimed is 1. 'In combination, a supporting surface, means for moving objects along said surface, a 'movable conveyor arranged beside said surface. and traveling in' the same direction as said means, a stationary stop associated with said conveyer, and a rotary device provided with aplurality of arms laterally shitting objects from said conveyor to said surface. l
. 2. In combination, .a'siipporting surface, meansfor moving objects along said surface, a movable conveyor arranged beside said surface, a two-armed stationary stop extending over said conveyen'a rotary device provided with a plurality ot arms said arms passing, between the arms of the stationary stop, and means for rotating said device.
3. In combination, a supporting surface,
means for moving objects along said surface, a movable conveyer arranged beside said surface, and traveling in the same direction as said means, a stationary stop associated with said convc 'er, a vertical shaft, a plurality of arms secured thereto, and means rotating said shaft whereby said arms laterally shit't objects from said conveyor onto s id surtace.
' t. In combination, a sup orting surface, means for moving cartons along said surface, a movable conveyor arranged on each side of said surface. a rotary device provided with a plurality of arms assoiated with each conveyor, ctninections' between said devices whereby they are rotated in opposite (li1.'e.cti .-ns, and meanst'or rotating said devices whereby cartons are shifted lat-- orally from said conveyersnnto said surface. In combination, a supporting surface,
means for moving cartons along said surface, a movable conveyer arranged on each side of said surface, a stationary stop projectingover each conveyer, a rotary device provided with a plurality of arms associated with each conveyer, connections between said devices whereby they are rotated in opposite directions, and means for rotat-- disposed shafts whereby cartons are shifted laterally from said conveyors onto said surface.
means moving objects alongsaid surface. a movable conveyor arranged beside said surface and travelin in the same direction as said means, a stationary stop associated with said 'convdyer. and a rotary device provided with. a plurality of arms laterally shifting objects from one to the other.
