WILLIS, -kaivs'as 'Assmnoa forfora-HALF 'no QBNJAMIN L.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, Harrow T. SMITH, a'
of construction and organization as herein,
after described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l, is a central longitudinal section of a burner embodying my invention. Fig. '2, is a section on the line II-H of Fig. l.
Fig. 3, is a section on the line III-fIIIbf Fig. l. Fig. l, is a section on the line IV-IV of Fig. 2.
In the said drawing, l indicates the body ot' the burner, the same being of .elongated forni and hollow to provide an oil chamber 2 contracted at-its front end to produce the neck 3. Cast integral with the body and communicating with the interior thereof and extendino forwardly from the neck is a hollow nozzle 4. Opposite walls 5 of the nozzle diverge forwardly and laterally, and the remaining. walls G converge and nearly meet at their front ends, so that at the tip 0f the burner the combustible mixture, hereinafter referred to, shall escape ina wide and shallow jet. g-
, indicates a threaded bdss communicating with the rear end of chamber Q, and 8 an oil supply pipe. screwed into the threaded boss. i t) is a projection cast integral with the .body 1 and provided with a passage 10 cominunicatin with a threaded boss 11 at the opposite side of the body from boss 7, and screwed into the boss `11 is a steam supply pipe 12. The .projection 9 is also cast wit a longitudinal passage 13 communicating wlth a threaded opening 14, closed by a plug 15.

Extending longitudinally within and of substantially the same length as the body, is a tubular steam nozzle 1G communicating at its rear end with passage 10 and adapted to discharge steam through the neck 3 into the nozzle i, said nozzleA- 16 being produced by the introduction of a boring.' tool through passage 13 before .the plug 15 is secured in place.
In practice steam enters 'the burner through pipe l2 and is discharged from nozzle 1G into the nozzle 4 and thustends to create a vacuum and/to eifect the injection of oil through pipe 8 into chamber 2 andv thence into the nozzle l* where it is thoroughly mixed with thesteam, the mixture being thorough because the form of. the noz-v zle .Je compels the oil to spread out into a comparatively thin film and thus permit the steam to comeinto contact with every part of it.
iVith a burner of this character Where the steam effects the injection of the oil into the nozzle, no means for feeding the oil, other than gravity need be resorted to, nor in fact it necessary to utilize gravity. if' the steam is under high pressure.
Vhile the appliance is described as used in connection with ste-ani and oil, it is to be understood that air may be employed as a substitute for the steam.
From the above description itwill`be apparent' that have produced an oil burner embodying the features of Aadvantage enumerated. I wish it to be understood that l reserve the right to make all changes falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Leb.
ters Patent, is
in oil burner, comprising a casing having a cylindrical portion and a. fiattened nozzle portion connected together by a conStric-ted neck portion, said nozzle portionwidening gradually toward its mouth and the walls of the nozzle being gradually ta ered about said mouth, a pair of threaded bosses forniing air inlet and steam inlet openings -spectively, at diametrically opposite points onvthe rear end of said cylindrical porti-on of the casing, a steam inlet chamber formed l and a plu about said'steam inlet openingand provided g opening. j
with a steamI nozzle' extending' axially through said cylindricalportion to said constricted neck portion, the rear end of said cylindrical port-ion of the casing having an 'Witnesses oiening in communication with said steam l .W. A c amber and in line with said steam nozzle, i A. F.
