Description
' UNITED gSTATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH A. DIXON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOOK ATTACHMENTS FOR SEATS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 109,598, dated November 29, 1870.
To a/ZZ whom, it WMI/ zj concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. DIXON, of the city of New York, in the county and State of `New York7 have invented a new and Improved Hook Attachment'to Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciica-A tion.
This invention consists in the attachment, to the back of chairs, benches, or other seats of public halls, theaters, churches, and the like, of self-closing hat-hooks, whereby the occupants of seats may be providedwith the means of hanging their hats, umbrellas, canes, or other articles on the seat-backs fronting them, and yet not be interfered with or annoyed, when entering or leaving the seats, with projecting hooks. f
At the present time public assembly-rooms afford no place for placing the hat, except on the floor under the seat, and this place is very objectionable, as when placed therein they are frequently injured by the feet of the sitter being thrust back under the seat against them, or by the uncleaniloor.
Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of a chair or bench having a self-closing hook applied to it, and Fig. 2 is a top piew of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the seat-back.
B is a metal hook pivoted at the lower end to the sides C of a cast or stamped metal attachment for holding the hooks, said attachment being screwed to the seat-back in any suitable way, and having an opening at the top to allow the hook to rise upward from the pivot D.
E is aspring of wire coiled around the pivot between the walls F of the hook, through which the said pivot passes, and bearing at the ends G against the seat-back, while the loop H bears against the lower end of the is made; or it may be bent more in the form of a hook.
Both the hooks and the attachments c', forV connecting to the seat, may be madeeither in cast or stamped metal, preferably the lat-ter, and the whole may be provided at a t-riing cost.
The application of these hooks to the backs' of seats of churches, theaters, and 'other asA sembly-rooms, where, as at present, the occupants of seats are compelled either to hold their hats and other articles in the hands, or run the risk of injury to them, will be of great convenience and usefulness. f
I am aware that self-closing spring-actuated hooks have herefore been used on the walls of rooms and in closets for hanging clothes.
I am also aware that hook-racks and the like have been placed on the backs of seats; but I am not awarethat the self-closing hooks have been applied to seat-backs as I propose to do.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The pivoted hook B, having walls F F, pivot D, spring E H, sides c, and holding attachment c', all applied, in combination, to a seat-rack, as and for the purpose described.
The above specicationY of my invention signed by me this 4th day of October, 1870.
JOSEPH A. DIXON.
