'specification of Letters'ratent. v Patented Apr. 28 Application medium 9, 19,13.
serial No. 772,610. f
,Be it known that I. HENRY L. Freins, a citizen of the United States, residing` at State ot' Illinois. have invented a new and nsetul Improvement 1n Mangers, of which the tollotvintr 1s a specication.
M v invention relates to certain new and.
useful iml'iroveinents in mangers and is fully described and explained in the specieation and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end view of my improved device, showing the same in its normal or lowered position in solid lines and in its raised position in dotted lines, and Fig. 2 is a'section on the line 2, olf Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 3 is the curb of the stall; at is 'a trough of cement or other material forming the bottom of the manger, and, in accordance with common practice, extenalinfrf longitudinally of a series of stalls: 5 is one of the vertical members of the stallends and 6 is one of the' side bars of the stall, all these parts being formed in accordance with common and standard practice.
'Tis a bar extending upward from the curb and diagonally forward at a slight inclination, its upper end being att-ached to a forward projection of the stall'side and its lower end being held rmly in position by any suitable mechanism. In the present form of consuction the lower end of the bar' enters a iole in a casting 8 set in the concrete of the curb and forming the support for the frames at'tze front et the stall.
It will be understood that a series of these -bars 7 is provided, one opposlte each stallside, or between each two stalls in the series, as well as at Vthe ends of the terminal stalls of the series. Each bar 7 carries a collar f) vertically adjustable by jrneans of a set-screw 1Y0 and provided with a forwardly-extendingvertical ear 11. These ears all'ord means for pivotall.v .supporting manger partitions and ends I2, each of which is made of sheetmetal, stitl'ened at its edges with iron, and curved at its bottom to conform to the trough forming the bottom of the manger. `he lpartitions tand ends are connected `by a man fiefront 13 of sheet-metal, so that when lowered each manger has a bottom formed bv the trough` a front and two ends, lent is open at the top and rear.
l Surrounding each bar 7, above the collar l) I V t z by'lmks 1G with a point `onlthe correspond- Ha1\'ar in thtl county of illcHenry and 1s aspring. 14. Each of said springs ssesupwardly upon collars x15 connected swings awa-y from a straight 'line connecting the pivot of the link on the collar 'with4 the pivot ofthepartition on the ear A1-1, whereby the effective leverage of-'the spring is lgreatly increased. .It will be noted that in the ,position shown in solid 'lines in Fig. 1. the link is quite close to the dead'center and its upward pull on the mangers is very slight` while in the posit-ion shown in dot- `tedtlines, the link hasl just moved past a position at right-angles to the line connecting its pivot on the partition with the pivot of the partition on the ear, so that the operation of the spring is very effective. Thus, the mangers remain inu their lowered position, but when raised by hand are held up positively by the springs and their rise is facilitated throughout by the action of the springs.
It is to be observed that in the `present form ofconstruction the manger is pivotally supported entirely independent of the frame at the front of the stall. This frame.` carrying as it does, a stanchion. and being longitudinall)y adjustable in the manner and for the purpose set forth in the application 0f myself and Howard J. Ferris. filed October 18, 1911, Serial No. 655.34%, is wholly unfitted, by reason of its adjustment, to support the manger, which must necessarilyoccupy a position fixed with reference to the curb. Heretofore it has been the practice to mount pivoted mangers on the framework Vforming the front of the stall. In the present structure this practice -is-not followed, but the manger is carried entirely by other parts of the structure.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of the construction herein shown, and I do not intend to limit myself thereto, except as pointed out-in the following claims, in which it is my intentionvto claim allthe novelty inherent in the device as broadly as is permitted by the state of the art,
- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,- z
l. The combination with the stall-members, of a series of stalls and a manger in front of'the .stalls and pivotally movable, of bars extending upwardly at the margins between the 'stalls and serving pivotally to support the manger, springs Surrounding the bars, and links, eaeh having operative connections at one end with the manger and at the other with thevspring, for thepurpose set forth. 4
2. In combination, a curb, a frame orm ing the front of the stall and adjustable longitudinally of the, stall with reference to the curb, a feed-partition member pvotally supported independent of the frame at the front of the stall and adapted to be raised and lowered, whereby the `front frame of the stall may "be longitudinally adjusted without changing the position of the feedpartiton member,
3. In combination with stall-members and whereby the springs tend to raise the manger with increasing force as the same is raised.
4. In amanger and stall construction, in combination, a support, two frames mounted thereon, one of which is fixed and the other one 'of which is adjustable in the direction' or the length of the' stall, a manger pivotally mounted on the fixed frame and adapted" tov be raised and lowered, and spring operated means having a substantially dead-center posltion when the manger 1sv in loweredeqm sition, and adapted to aid in raising tlhe manger and 'hold it in raisedposition. y
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of April, 1913.
HENRY L. FERR'Is.
