LUIS MANZANO, 0F HUELVA, SPAIN.
BUFFER FOR CAR-COUPLINGS.
ineaoii,
To all who/m, it may 0011001171.'
Be it known that I, LUIS MANZANO, a subject of the King of Spain, and resident of Huelva, Spain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buffers for Car- Couplings, of which the following is a specilication.
The present invention relates particularly to buffers for car couplers, the object being to provide simple and effective means for absorbing undue shocks when cars are coupled. n
The invention also relates to improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a partial side eleva-tion and section kof my improvement. Fig: 2 is a perspective view of a coupler equipped with my member, parts being broken away. Fig. 3 is a plan view partially in section. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the outside buifer. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the forward abutment. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the inside buffer member.
50 indicates a car, provided with supports 51, in which my improved buii'er is mounted, the buer comprising a two part draw bar.
2lb, indicates a member of the draw bar, formed with a square portion 21', from which extends a reduced stem 21. On the stem, and fitting against the inner end of the square portion 21, is an abutment 29, formed with seats or depressions 31X, and on the inner end of the stem is a second abutment 53, mounted in one of the supports 51. The abutment 53, is confined in position by a washer and nut 54, on the end of the stem, and a spring 30, is interposed between the said abutments 29 and 53. llhe forward end of the member 21h, is horizontally bifurcated, as at 21", the bifurcated portions having vertical, alined openings 4. In rear of the bifurcated portion 21X, the member 2lb, is formed on its upper and lower horizontal surfaces with shoulders 24X, and in alinement with said shoulders, and extending outwardly from both sides of the member 2lb, are lugs 24.
22 indicates an outer member, comprising a coupling head 3, and two rearwardly projecting side bars 22, which iit closely against the sides of the member 21h. The side bars 22 are provided on their upper Specicaton of Letters Patent.

and lower edges, in rear of the head 3, with lugs 22X, which coperate with the lugs 24, in the operation of the buffer. The rear ends of the side bars 22', are provided with reduced extensions 31, which it in the seats 31X, in the abutment 29. The side bars 22, are formed with elongated slots 27, in which the ends of a pin 5 lit, said pin being mounted in lugs 22i on the member 21h.
A locking pin 2 is mounted on the pin 5, between the lugs 22i, and extends through the openings 4.
In operation, a coupling link 1, serves as a vconnection between the couplers of adjacent Cars as shown in the drawings.
In normal position, the spring 30, will hold the two members 22 and 21b in position, so that the lugs 22", land 24 will be spaced apart, and the pinv 5, will be against the rear walls of the slots 27. When pressure on a coupler head is applied, the member 22 will be forced inwardly, which through the mediumof the abutment 29, will compress the spring 30. If the pressure is continued, the walls of the slot 27, will contact with pin 5, and the lugs 22", and 24, will contact, and then both members 21", and 22, will simultaneously move against the tension of spring 30, and thereby distribute the strain.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a support, a two part draw bar mounted in the support and comprising two members, one member having a stem, an abutment mounted on the stem, a second abutment on the stem, and against which both members abut, a spring interposed between the abutments, the member having the stem also having lugs, the companion member having side arms which engage the member with the stem, and said companion member having lugs which cooperate with the lugs on the member having the stem.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination of a draw bar comprising an outer member and an inner member, the outer member having two parallel arms formed at their inner ends with studs, said outer member having lugs and slotted ears near the forward end, the inner member having perforated ears and lugs near its forward end the earsv on both members being adjacent each other, and the lugs on both members coperating, a pin connecting the ears; the lugs being normally spaced apart, a reduced stem extending from the inner member, an abutment mounted on the stem and against which the inner member vand the outer member abut, said abutmentJ having seats in Which the studs fit, a second abutment on the stem, means for retainingthe second abutment on the stem, and a spring interposed on` the stem and confined between the abutments.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, a draw` bar comprising inner and outer members, fthe outer member having a hollow head "formed With slotted ears and lugs adjacent-said ears, the inner member having a bifurcated-head cWhich its in and forms part ofthehollow head onrtheouter member, the inner member, having perforated ears Which register With the slotted ears,
and lateral lugs in rear of said perforated ears, the lugs on the inner and outer members being 1n the same path of movelnent and normally spaced from each other, a pin LUIS MANZANG.
