sidingat Collinwood, inthe county of Cuyahoga and State of Ghio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft and Bulfing Mechanism lfor Railway-Cars, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to draft and buiing :mechanisms for Vrailway cars, and pertains 1more especially to Lthat class or type of such devices which require a comparatively wide range of lateral or angular movement of said parts on taccount of short and sharp` curves in the track. More specifically, the
invention belongs `to 'that class of devices in which `the bufling mechanism partakes 1 bodily `of the lateral movement of the drawbar, and lmaintainsa substantially7 constant relation tothe latter as :regards lateral or angular movement;
Among the leading objects of the inventionare to provide a mechanism capable of a wide rangefofangular movement, and in Vwhich 'the buffer plates of adjacent cars may maintain parallelism and `contact under all conditions; to dispense with the usual equalizer bar and one set of Iside stems; to provide improved means'of attaching the safety chains; to; provide an improved means of uniting the parts of a sec- :tional Vdraw-bar;` and, in generahto provide a reliable and efficient mechanism -of the character specified representing a relatively low cost of construction and maintenance.
To these ends the invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and more definitely pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a longitudinal sill, and 6 an end sill of a car underframe, and 7 and 7a designate transverse I-beams forming hangers or carrier ends for the draw-bar and buing mech- .ings 8, front and j anism.- Somewhat inwardly ofthe forward `.end of the car-frame is located what I term the draft-rigging, the same comprising, in :the simple form shown, the usual stop castrear followers 9 `and 10, lresistance spring 11, and yoke 12, the forward end of which `latter' is pivotally `connected as by a pivot-bolt 13 to the vrear end of the draw-bar 14;, which latter is herein shown as of considerable length, and as consisting of forward and rear sections 14 and 114D connected end to end, as indicated at 14 -in Fig. 2, this being for convenience and economy in removing eithersection, especially the forward one, when necessary by reason of injury or wear, ywithout disturbing the other. r,I`he two .sections are unitedby upper and lower straps 15 and 16, respectively, which overlap both sections to a considerable extent, and are united thereto by through-bolts -17 and rivets 18.
Secured to Aand embracing the forward section `of the draw-bar, .slightly 'in rear of the coupler head 19 is what I `term ithe lbufl'er-.supporting frame; the same `consist- -strap 15 transversely thereof, land Aa generally U-.shaped casting 21 rigidly secured beneath `the same as I'by :bolts ,22 and ,embracing the draw-bar and straps, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. Atfthe ends ofthe casting 20 areformed pockets 23 to accommodate the buffer springs 24, said pockets being opened on their cute-11 sides to facilitate the lateral insertion of the springs. Disposed forwardly of the pockets 23 are guides 25 to accommodate the side stems 26 of the buiing mechanism, said stems at their rear portions being shouldered for engagement with followers 27 which in turn abut against the forward ends of the buliing springs, said stems having integral reduced portions or rods 26a extending axially through the springs and through the rear ends of the pockets, and retaining-nuts 28 and locknuts 29. The forward` ends ofthe stems 26 have lateral extensions'30 that are apertured, as shown atr31, for the connection thereto of the safety chains 32, and the forward ends of said stems, inwardly of the lateral extensions, are ypivotally connected by the usual buffer-plate 33.
