To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Knis'rnx PoU-LsnN, a citizen of Denmark, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting or Lifting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hoisting or lifting apparatus designed for use in the engine rooms of steamships and in similar places where but little space is to be had. and the object thereof is to provide an apparatus of this class which may be quickly and easily applied and moved from one point to another, or adjusted into different positions, and whereby, heavy weights or heavy articles may be easily raised above the floor to a suitable height to permit of their being moved from one point or location to another; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device or apparatus of the class specified constructed and operating as hereinafter described.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a cross section of a part of a deck of a ship, or the deck or overhead structure of the engine room of a ship, and showing my improved hoisting or lifting apparatus ;Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and ;Fig. 3 a partial section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing forming part of -this specification, I have shown at a part of a deck of a ship supported by parallel beams two of which are shown at a and a and which are provided at their lower edges with longitudinal beads or thickened portions a and in the practice of my invention, I provide a clamp device 7) adapted to be secured to one of the beams, said clamp device, as shown in the drawing, consisting of a front plate or jaw member 6 and a back plate or jaw member 5 connected by transverse bolts 5 The transverse plate or jaw member 6 is provided centrally with a transverse groove b adapted to receive the thickened portion a of the beam a with which it is l connected, and at its bottom with a trans verse shoulder Z) against which the plate or jaw member 72 abuts, and by means of this construction the clamp device Z) may be securely attached to or connected with the beam (4 in connection with which it is used.
Hing-ed to the top of the plate or jaw member 5 as shown at b is a link member 0 to which is hinged at c a lifting beam (Z to the free end of which is pivoted a shoe (Z which is adapted to bear on the deck beam (4 and the length of the lifting beam (Z is greater than the distance between said beams. .Vhen the clamp device 7 is secured to the deck beam 0 the said lifting beam (Z will extend diagonally and upwardly across the space between the deck beams a and a and the shoe (Z will bear on the beam (4 near the top thereof.
A pulley block 6 is suspended from the lifting beam (Z by means of clevis or yokeshaped devices f and g, and the beam (Z is provided with a number of pin holes (Z whereby the pulley block 6 may be moved, if desired, into different positions on said beam. The pulley block 6 is provided with asingle pulley 7?, around which is passed a rope or cable 2' and a double pulley block j is connected with the floor of the room or chamber in which the apparatus is used and one end of the rope or cable 2' is connected with a supplemental double pulley block is having two pulleys 70 and the block is provided with two pulleys 7' and a rope or cable m is passed through the pulley blocks j and 7c in the usual manner and one end on thereof is secured, as shown at m and any thereof and the end 2' of the rope or cable 2' is attached to the body or article to be raised or lifted, or moved on the floor of the engine room or other compartment, which body or article may, as will be understood, be raised to any height permissible between the decks or between the deck a and the floor of the engine room or compartment, and said body or article may be moved or swung into the desired position or into a position difierent to that which it previously occupied.
lVith the hoisting or lifting apparatus for the purpose specified, now used, in the engine rooms or between the decks of ships, it is impossible to raise a body or article very high and much trouble is experienced in moving such body or article from one point suitable power is applied to the other end m to another, but with my 'mprovement, said body or article may be raised much higher and be more conveniently moved.
lit will be apparent that the parts 6 and (Z which constitute the novel features of my improved hoisting or lifting apparatus may be attached to the deck beams whenever desired and may be quickly and easily moved from one point to another, and the pulley block 0 may be connected with the beam (Z at ditl'erent points, as may be desired, and as the deck beams and a any desired number of which may be employed, are alwa at. the same distance apart, my im proved hoisting or lifting apparatus may be used in any desired location in ordinary ship constructions. t must be understood, however, that my improved hoisting or lifting apparatus may be used in other places as well as on ship board, where conditions are favorable and two parallel supports are to be had, and my invention is also not limited to the particular form of clamp device 7) or other features of construction herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereoi may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is i. In a hoisting apparatus of the class described, the combination with parallel supports of a clamp device adapted to be secured to one of said supports, and a beam hinged. to one side portion of said clamp device and the length of which is greater than the distance between said supports.
In a hoisting apparatus of the class de scribed, the combination with two parallel supports of a clamp device adapted to be secured to one of said supports a beam hinged to said clamp device and the length noeaezo of which is greater than the distance between said supports, and the free end of which is adapted to bear on the other of said supports, and a pulley block suspended from said beam.
3. In a hoisting apparatus of the class described, the combination with two parzllel supports, 01 a clamp device adapted to be secured to one of said supports, a beam hinged to said clamp device and the length of which is greater than the distance between said supports, and the free end of which is provided ith a pivoted shoe adapted to bear on the other support, and a pulley block suspended from said beam.
4. A hoisting apparatus adapted for use in connection with two parallel supports said hoisting apparatus comprising a clamp adapted to be secured to one of said sup ports, one side of said clamp being provided with a hinged member, a beam hinged to said hinged member and the length of which is greater than the distance between said supports, and the free end of which is adapted to bear on the other support.
A hoisting apparatus adapted to be used in connection with two parallel supports and comprising, a clamp device adapted to be secured to one of said supports, a beam hinged to said clamp device and the length of which is greater than the distance between said supports the free end of which is adapted to bear on the other of said supports and a pulley block connected with said beam.
