To all whom. it may concern Be it known that 1, James F. Mirr'riinws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottersville, in the county oi Bristol and State of ltlassachusetts, have invented an Inn provemcnt. in Knot-Tying implements, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
lhis invention relates to knot tying im plements particularly intended for use in piecing up the broken ends of spooling machines. it. however, is capable of use in other relations and for other purposes.
In order that the principles of the invention may readily be understood, 1 have disclosed a single embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a knot tying implement embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a front end ele'ation thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the implement and showing the first position of the threads thereon; and Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 are enlarged views of a portion of the implement illustrating the several steps of the knot forming operation.
While the knot tying implement of my invention may be of general application, it is particularly intended for use in piecing up broken ends in a spooler. When an end is broken, the operative usually places the left hand upon the spool to stop its rotation upon its spindle and with the other hand grasps the broken ends extending from the spool and the bobbin in its holder, both hands being used to tie the knot.
.Yhile the implement herein disclosed may be supported upon the hand of the operative in any suitable manner, it is preferably supported upon the left hand; that is to say, upon the hand used to stop the rotation of the spool whose end is broken. Preferably also the implement. is supported upon the torefinge" of the left hand and in such manner that the knot tying operation can he performed wholly by the right hand of the user, as will be more fully described. The knot tied is what is known as the spoolers knot.
Referring more particularly to the drawing. the knot tying implement comprises a preferably metallic piece or strip 1, herein termed a base or thread receiver. Attached thereto in any suitable manner is a ring 2, within which a digit of the user and preferably the forefinger of the left hand may be inserted. I contemplate adapting the ring 2 to fingers of different size. To that end I may either attach the ring to the base, but in such manner as to permit it to be readily disconnected and a. different sized ring substituted, or as shown in Fig. 2 I may form the ring as an open one and of material which may be readily bent so that the ring may be expanded or contracted to the proper size. It the ring be detachable, it may be secured in any suitable manner, as by means of a screw. If permanently attached it may be connected to the base in any suitable manner or formed therewith.
The base or thread receiver 1 is provided with an extension 3 constituting a bight former, herein shown as reversely bent and having side guiding edges 3, 3 and having at its end a knot former t shown as an eye or looper and positioned preferably at a slight distance from and substantially parallel with the base 1 and also preferably transversely thereof, the bight former 3 being shown as twisted as at 5 to bring the knot former i into the transverse position described. In this embodiment of the invention, the bight former is shown as formed with and overhanging the base or receiver 1.
I preferably provide a thread introducing guide and a thread exit guide. The thread introducing guide is here represented as a preferably metallic piece 6 secured to the under face of the base 1 and extending upwardly adjacent the inner edge of such base. The thread exit guide is represented as a notch or slot 7 formed in the base preferably immediately beneath the knot former 4. If desired, the edge leading to the exit guide may be inclined thereto as represented at 8.
I provide any suitable means to sever the threads after the formation of the knot, and to that end may provide any suitable construction of movable blade or may provide the base 1 with a sharpened edge or attach thereto a stationary blade in proper relation to the knot former 4. In the present embodiment of the invention, 1 have,

By taking hold of one of "he thread ends at this point in the o fieration a kink is prevented. That is to say. the threads are prevented from twisting together above the knot as is now done in certain types of knot tying device. Moreover the operative can at a glance inspect the knot while the thread end is held by the rand. This can be done without. appreciable loss of time. By drawing upon the oined threads the knot falls off the hook 15 and the operation is completed.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent: that the knot tying implement of my invention is one which permits the very rapid tying oi. the knot and also permits inspection of the knot before it is rel ased and avoids all kinking or twisting together at the threads. As the implement can be carried upon a linger ol that hand which is usually placed upon. the spool to stop its rotation when an end bl'QllkS down. the operative has one, hand wholly free for manipulating the thread and can if desired readily sever the thread by the thumb or another linger oi the hand whereon the implement is mounted. l urthermore the implement is exceedingly simple and inexpensive and does not have parts liable to get out at order or to became broken.
Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in. the following claims.
Claims:
1. A knot tying implement comprising a thread receiver having a bight former about which a pair of threads are to be wrapped to form a common bight, said bight former having an open eye extending transversely to the receiver, into which the free ends of said pair of threads may be conducted after the formation of the bight, means to sever said free ends and means to support the knotted threads after severing.
11. A knot tying implement comprising a thread receiver having a bight former about which a pair of threads are to be wrapped to form a common bight. said bight former having an open eye extending transversely to the receiver, into which the free ends of said pair of threads may be conducted after he formation of the bi ght, said bi ght former having a bight supporting hook adjacent said eye to support the knot after thread severance, and means to sever the free ends of the threads.
12. A knot tying implement comprising a thread receiver having integral therewith a bight. former about which a pair of threads are to be wrapped to form a common bight. said bight former having an eye provided with a thread supporting projection and means to sever the free ends of the threads while still leaving the knotted portion supported upon said projection.
13. A knot tying implement comprising a thread receiver having a portion bent to extend at an angle to said receiver and having a bight former about which a pair of threads are to be wrapped to form a common bight, said bight former having as a unitary member thereof a terminal knot former for both said threads, and means to support the implement upon the hand of the operator.

A knot tying implement comprising a base adapted to be supported upon the hand of the operator, said base having a bight former about which a pair of threads are to be wrapped to form a common bight, said bight former having as a unitary member thereof a terminal knot former and severing means movable with respect to said bight former.

A knot tying implement comprising a base adapted to be supported on a digit of the operator, and having a bight former about which a pair of threads are to be wrapped to form a common bight, said bight former having a knot forming eye, and means beyond said eye to sever the tree ends of said threads.
16. A knot tying implement comprising a base adapted to be supported on a digit of the operator, and having a bight former about which a pair of threads are to be wrapped to form a common bight, said bight former having a terminal eye, and a digitally operated blade between the eye and base.
17. A knot tying implement comprising a base having a thread introducing guide and a bight former having a terminating knot former said base, at a point spaced and distinct from said knot former, having an exit guide to receive the free ends of the threads extending from said knot former.
