In order to prtnide latera ly spared flllssts whieh upport suhstantialh tit) the entire weight of the car body, the sheet girders or plates which form substantial portions of the side walls of a car, are arranged in the form of end panels 14 to the inner ends of which are rigidly secured in any suitable manner, spaced door posts 15, which are rigidly united above by a cross beam 16 and below by means of a sill beam 17, which cooperates with an angle bar 18 extending across the door frame and throughout the lengths of the plates or girders 14, 14 and conforming to the lower edges thereof. The upper edges of said plates or girders are reinforced and stiffened by means of side bars 1%). Detached detail views of these several parts are represented. in Figs. 7 to 11, inclusive. In the preferred embodiment of my invention reference being had more especially to Figs. 3 and 9, the laterally spaced trusses are supported directly from the trucks in the manner already described, to adapt them to support the entire weight of the car body, which is carried thereby. Each of the panels 14 increases in depth toward the door frame, the broadest portion of the panel being rigidly bolted or riveted to the post of said door frame in the manner shown in Fig. 12. At regularly spaced intervals along each panel 14 cleats or stiffening bars 20 are riv led to the panel 14 and serve to hold said panel from buckling horizontally. The straps or cleats 20 are preferably extended upwardly to form the posts or uprights for supporting the roof 21, shfiwn in dotted ines.
now to Figs. 13, 14. and 15, each of the panels 14. is bordered above by the buckled plate 19, the inwardly deflected upper edge of said plate being adapted to receive the inclined plate 22, secured to alongitudinal beam 23, which constitutes the jamb of the side windows of the car. As shown best in F 14 and 15, the cleats or uprights 20 are provided with laterally projecting flanges 24, whereby, they are adapted to be riveted to the panel 14. The flange 24 is deflected at 25 to form a recess adjacent the bottom of cleat 20, for the reception of the vertical flange of the angle side bar 18. The jamb or sill beam 23 is recessed in the form shown in Fig. 14 to receive the upper edge of an inner plate 26, the lower edge of said plate 26 being rigidly connected by a Z-bar 27 with an angle bar 28, which is rigidly mounted on the cleats or posts 20, and serves to support the transverse beams 29, Which carry the floor 30 of the car. As indicated in Fig. 15, a door sill plate is provided by the horizontal branch of the reinforcing tension bar 17, which extends across the door frame and is rigidly secured to the panels 14- on either side thereof in any suitable nianner. Mounted upon said bar 17, is a channel bar 32, which provides a guiding groove 3-"), for rollers (not shown on the Referring drawings) carried by the lower edges of the doors 31. As details of construction in the present embodiment, the cross beam 16, which rigidly unites the uprights of the door frame as shown in Fig. 17 is buckled outwardly at to form a strengthening rib. The upper edge of the cross beam 16, is rigidly secured to an angle beam 36, (see Fig. 13), which is carried on the upper ends of the posts or cleats 20. the roof 21 of the car being supported on each side by an inwardly deflected plate 37. which is rigid with, or forms a part of the cross-beam 16. Means for reinforcing the uprights 15 of the door frame, are shown in Fig. 16, in which said post 15 is shown to be constructed of a plate having its ends folded over and rigidly secured to itself to form hollow columns 38 and 39.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 5 it will be seen that according to the preferred embodi ment of my invention shown on the accompanying drawings, the entire load transmitted to the transverse body bolsters by means of the brackets on the ends of said bolsters is carried on either side at each end by a plurality of rivets 40 which are ar ranged in series along the lower edge of the panel plates 14. The rivets 14 in effect act to stiffen the connection between the panel 14 and the bracket 12, 13.
The advantages of my improved car construction wilT now b readily understood and briefly explained are due to the following features. By the arrangement of laterally spaced trusses constructed of relatively thin vertically disposed plates which increases in depth from the ends toward the centrally disposed door frame, it becomes unnecessary to embody the usual heavy, cumbersome and expensive beams and girders which constitute the main under frame of the car. In order to make available the full strength of the panels 14 when disposed on edge, thev reinforcing side bars 18 and 19. in conjunction with the cleats or posts 11, serve to pre vent buckling in any direction and in effect form a substantially rigid truss which practically constitutes the closed in port ion of the sides of the car body. brief inspection of the drawings will show that the total weight of the car is transmitted and supported by these longitudinal trusses comprising the reinforced panels 14 at either end connected by the centrally disposed door frame. Incidentally said door frame forms a transverse enlargement of the truss at the point of greatest moment. This construction is comparatively light, strong, economical to manufacture, and consumes relatively small power in operation and is relatively easy upon the track roadbed. At opposite ends of the car the laterally spaced trusses are supported directly from the body bolsters which are swiveled upon the truck bolsters.
It will, of course, be understood that various modifications in the construction and arrangement of parts can be made without departing from the broad spirit of my invention.

In a car, wheel truck holsters adjacent opposite ends of the car, body bolsters mounted thereon, girder plates having their inner walls intermediate their, upper and lower edges secured to the outer ends of said body holsters said girder plates extending toward the center of the car and having their ends spaced to allow for center entrance doorways, the upper edges of said girder plates being arranged substantially horizontal at suitable height to correspond with a window sill. the lower edges of said girder plates being inclined downwardly toward the center of he car, and door frames having their uprights respectively secured to the spaced edges of said girder plates and with the door sill on approximately the same level with the lower edges of said girder plates adjacent the center of the car.
