Be it known -that I, WILLIAM PIKE, Jr., a citizen of the ,United States, and resident of Orange, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Calculating-.lilachines, of which the'following is a specification.
-. This invention relates to improvements in adding and recording machines and the object of the invention is to providesimple and positive' means for effecting the recording of totals and subftotals in said machines. The invention will be fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing, invwhich, y 4

The present 4invention relates=to an. improvement in the vclass ofl machines represented in UAS. Letters .Patent No. 504,963 to W. S. Burroughs.' .The invention is illus- :trated in connection with the machine shown and fully described in said Letters Patent and for a complete description of such machine reference `is had to the patent, it being deemed only necessary to'describe the novel features of the invention in this specification and suchgparts of the patented construction as immediately .cooperate therewith. It is Vto be understood however that the invention is not limited tQ tharticular machine illustrated in the patent specified but that it is applicable to other machines of the Vsame class.

Vrocking of the frame C serves to rock the lever 917 and this lever engages a rocking frame 920 carrying a seriesbf. teeth 926 which engage and lock the pinions 916 .when they are withdrawn from the racks 61.0. Upon the register frame C are two studs 958, 958 which are adapted to be engaged by notches Q02, w3, upon opposite arms of a forked .pitman 914. The pitman 914 is connected by a link 911 with a lever 227 fixed on a rock shaft 204. On the lever 227 is a finger key 265. The key 265, link 911 and the forked end of the pitman 914 are normallyheld in their upper positions by a suitable spring 288. A pair of links 216 are connected with the lever 227 and with an arm depending from the shaft 2G15, and these links carry a rod 209 which is adapted to withdraw the retainers 415 from the racks 610 when the latter are to descen'dto turn back the register wheels. At each reciprocation of the main shaft 800 the pitman 914, when in the normal position, which it occupies in accumulating amounts is reciprocated. For this purpose the pitman 914 is normally in engagement with an arm of the lever 913 which is. rocked to and fro Aby connections from the main shaft 800. As shown-the'shaft 800 has an arm S13a carrying avpawl S21 which engages alternately pins 961, 961:t on extremities of the lever 913. Thepawl V821 is normally held in line with the arm 813 by a spring 599 indicates aplaten similar to a, typewriter platen and 618 a series of type co- `operating therewith to print the numbers indicated by the register. The type 618 'are carried by a series of levers 611- pivoted on a rod or shaft 600 connected .with the racks 610.
The construction and operation of the foregoing mechanism is exactly the same as that shown and described in the Borroughs patent, to which reference is made, and no further description is deemed necessary hercin.- -In the machine described in said patent the key. 265 is depressed to rock'the lever 227 and held down during an entire cycle `of operations when-it 1s desired t0 print a total on the platen and restore the register to Z'ero preparatory to beginning a new addition, as described in lines 911 to 123, page 5 of the patented specification. It is also possible in said machine to print a subtotal without restoring the register to Zero by releasing the key 265 during the forward movement of the operating lever or during the first half of a cycle of operations effected by the main shaft'SOO, as described in the paragraph beginning line 124, page 5 of the patented specification. The peculiar manipulation of the total key '265 required for printing a sub-total in the Burroughs maA chine is diilicult and troublesome and it dis tracts the attention of the operator from the work in hand and thereby delays the'operation of the machine. Furthermore, if the key is Anot released at the proper` moment or interval in the' series of movements the register will be restored to zero andthe result of the work wiped out. 1t is also found that in power operated machines the operator cannot be relied upon to release the total key at the said proper moment to print a subtotal owing to the rapidity with which the machine is operated.
rlChis invention consists in providing means in connection with a machine of the character described whereby the necessity for the operator to time his movements in respect to those of the machine is avoided, the machine being provided with parts which remain in position after, adjustment during the entire cycle of operations to effect the required movements without anythought on the part of the operator.
In carrying out this invention, 1 make use of a part which I term a controller and which may be shifted to different positions, and which, when set in position preliminary to the movement of the racks to take a sub-total, prevents the lower arm ot the pitman fromoperating on the lower stud to throw the pinions out of engagement with the racks. The preliminary adjustment of this controller may be effected in any suitable manner. 1 also provide means for varying at times the position of the pitman ,9141 so as to set the parts to secure a total and leave the machine clear.
The controller may consist of any part which will serve in one position to prevent the pitman from being operated from the shaft 800. As shown,'the"pitman derives it-s reciprocating; motion from the arm 813a on the shaft 800 through vintermediate devices' Which may be adjusted by the controller so 'as .to put said arm into or out of operative connection with the pitman as required.
The connection of the lever 913 with the pitman is through the medium of a stud 3 on the lever entering an V shaped slot in the pitman, a spring 5 tending to -lift the pitman and keep the stud in the bottom of said slot, when the pitman Will move longitudinally with the oscillation of the lever at every movement of the arm 813e. The
parts may be operatively disconnected by means of the controller 2 shown as a blade, the lower end being above a stud 6 on the pitinan, so that when the blade is depressed, the pitman is pushed down until the stud 3 is in the horizontal part of the slot f1 when the movement of the arm 813% while it will reck the lever 913, will not operate or imf part movement to the vpitman.
The preliminary adjustment of the controller, as shown, is suitably effected, as by depressing the same by means of a finger key, the frictional resist-ance of the blade of the controller in its bearings serving to hold it in place. For the purpose of with drawingl the rack retainers 415 when the sub-total key is operated, an elbow lever 'T4 is provided,
this lever being pivoted to a frame Q16 and having an arm in the path of a pin 8 on the stem ofthe controller 2. l`he side bars of the frame 216 are slotted at 9 so that the said frame may'be operated without affecting the position of the lever 227 carrying'the key Q65 which I term the total key.
r1`he operation of the sub-total devices is as follows: When the controller is in normal or raised position, as shown in Fig. 1,- the rocker 913 reeiprocates the pitman 914 during each movement of the main shaft and the operation ofthe machine is the same as fully described in the Burroughs patent. When the controller is shifted to the position shown in'Fig. 2 and moves the rear end of the pitman down until the studA 3 stands in the horizontal branch of the slot 4, the rocking of the lever 913 then imparts no movement to the pitman 914-. The
effect of this is that the register wheels 9113 Y remain in mesh with the racks 610 duringr the down and up movement) of said racks. The downward movementr of the racks restore the register to zer) and the amount of the downward movfnnent of each rack depends upon the initial position of the register wheel with which it engages. .The downward'movement of the racks therefore properly positions the type 618 for printing the sub-total. Jrs the pinions reniain in mesh with the racks, the upward or reverse movements of the racks restore the pinions to their initial position in which they indicate the sub-total. The regular. operation of the machine may then be resumediuntil another sub-total or total is reached.
The total is secured from the adjustment of parts by. the total key Q65 which may be of any suitable character and arrangement. An important feature of diiferencc betw een this invention and devices heretofore proposed for adapting, a machine of the type illustrated to take a sub-total without manipulatingthe total kev as described in Burroughs Patent No. Olallil, is that the taking of a sub-total Ainvolves merely depressing a special key provided for that particular lpurpose and putting the machine through a single cycle of operation. "lhe mechanisms heretofore proposed for permitting the takingy of sub-totals without manipulating the total key of adding machines of the type referred to have neces sitated movement of the total key as.,wcll as the subtotal key or causing the machine tohave more than a single cycle of opera-- tion.
Having thus ldescribed the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination With register actuating racks, a register normally in engagement with said racks, a .main shaft adapted to effect relative movement betweenthe racks and register to actuate the latter, connections beand register for.disengagingand yrengagirieethev register and racks during the cycle o operations .produced by each actuation of the shaft, and a total key controlling the action of said connections to effect totalizing movement of the register, to vary the action of said c nnection to eject subltota-lizing movement of the register, independent of any movementfof the total key.

3. In a machine of the class described, the combination with register actuating racks, aregister normally in engagement with said racks, a main shaft adapted to efl'ect relative movement between the racks and 'register to actuate the latter, connections between the shaft and register for discngaging and rcengaging the register and racks during the cycle of operations produced by each actuation of the shaft, and a total key controlling the action of said connections to effect tot'alizing movement of the register, of means adjustable. to var v the action of said connections to etl'ect snb-totaliraing the register without causing of the' total key.
4. In amachine of the class described, the combination with register actuating racks, a register normally in engagement with said racks, a main shaft adapted to effect relative movement between the racks and adjustable to actuatc the latter, connections between thc-sliaft and register for dis-engaging and rengagiug the register and racks during the cycle of 'operations produced by each actuation of the shaft. and a total key controlling the e'lfect totalizing movement of the register, of a sub-total key adapted to disconnect the vmain shaft and register to cause the racks to effect sub-totalizing movement of the register without shifting the total ke \Y from its normal position.
