L. E. ROBINSON. SBPARABLE RETAINING MEMBER FOR WELL PACKERS.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA 3. I

LAWRENCE E. ROBINSON, OF COFFEYVI'LLE, KANSAS.
sErAE BLE RETAINING MEMBER FOR WELL-PACKERS.
Specification of Letters Extent.
Patented Apr. 21, 1914.
Application filed May 26, 1913. Serial No. 770,042.
1/ b (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, LAWRENCE E. ROBIN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cofl'eyville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, new and useful Improvements in separable Retaining Members for Well-Packers, of which the following is a'specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in members for well packers for holding the telescoping sections apart until the desired depth has been reached; the object being to provide a retaining sections so connected that they can be easily separated by dropping a sinker bar or bailer down into the well in order to strike the separable member a blow.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction and one in which the two separable members are held together by a bolt.
Another and further object of the invention is to provide a washing connection with separable members provided with side flanges in order to prevent thesections from twisting by side stress.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be herinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved separable retaining member showing the application of the same to a well between the telescoping sections; Fig. 2, is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a perspective of theseparable member detached from the well; Fig. 4, is a perspective of the separable member showing the parts thereof separated; and Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the flange washer and nut, detached.
Like numerals of reference refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the lower section and 2 the upper section of a well casing; the two sections being arranged to telescope each other; the upper-section 2 be1ng provided with the usual form of packing 3. Oppositely disposed slots are formed in the upper section 2 to receive my improved separable retaining member 4 in order to prehave invented certain separable retaining member formed of two I out the use of rivets. I he separable mem- 8O clamp the sectlons 5 and 6 When the separable member is in the p tion shown in Fig. 1 within a well casing by the peculiar shape of the clamping washers, it will resist upward pressure but will yield by beingstruck a blow with a bailer in order to force the reduced ends of the sections out of the slots as the two sections are separated by the pressure brought to bear thereon.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a separable retaining member which is formed of two sections clamped together in such a manner that they will readily separate in order to move the sections out of the slots of the Well casing; the flange washer holding the sections together until they have been practically forced out of the slots.
I claim: i
1. A separable sectional retaining member for well packers, comprising a pair of sections having abutting ends, and means for clamping said sections together for preventing movement of said sections in respect to each other in one direction. 1
2. A separable retaining member for well 110 packers comprising a pair ranged end to end h ing the sections together.
3. A separable retaining member for well Backers comprising a pair of ers having bolt arrange clamping s I 4. A separable retaining packers comprising a ends for (grooved abutting ends,
of sections araving means for clamp duplicate memand a within the grooves of said ranged in ahnement, each provided with a reduced outer ooved inner end, a bolt arranged t e rooved ends of 15 carried by said bolt restin edge of said arranged on said bolt embracing the sides of said members.
'5. A separable reta packers comprising a tions having grooved arranged members, an
the grooves 0 said members,
aid members together. member for well pair of members armember being end and a between a washer upon the upper a flange washer ining member for well pair of abutting ends,
duplicate seca bolt f said ends, a
flange washer arranged in said bolt extending up alongside of said sections, and a nut mounted on said bolt for clamping said sections together.
6. A retaining member for well packers, comprising a pair of abutting sections detachably connected together, a bolt for clamping said sections at their abutting ends, and means for preventing said sections from moving in respect to each other in one direction.
7. A separable retaining member for well packers, com rising a pair of abutting sections detacha ly secured together for preventing movement in one direction.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LAWRENCE E. ROBINSON.
